Great time to start thinking about playing through this series, right? So what are the games like? Story, gameplay, difficulty, etc. I don't know when I'll get around to it, but it definitely looks intriguing.
The Witcher 3 comes out this month and I haven't even played the first game

I would suggest watching the first one on youtube since the gameplay is massively dated and then playing the second one afterwards.

^this. TW1's "gameplay" is best experienced through an external victim.
Go straight to the second one.

Both the witcher 1 and 2 are much better storywise than anything Bioware has come up recently. Gameplay in them is maybe not for everybody but it is in no means terrible.
Higly recommended games both of them.

A lot of my friends call Witcher 1 "Fetch Quest: The Video Game" and honestly they are right as you will be spending a lot of time running from point A to Point B and back and forth. Combat is extremely repetitive as well and inventory is a mess. The Import feature in Witcher 2 is rather broken as well (it will ignore choices you made in the last game, plus major characters from the first game are missing completely in the second game) so if you are interested in the story just read up on the default story and start with the second game, the first game just gets boring very fast do to it's design.

If you are going to play the second game, you can also get the combat overhaul mod that CDProjektRed made on the Nexus. Unless you enjoy being a circus clown and rolling around to dodge attacks or get into position. Modding is really easy on TW2 so there is very little excuse not to.

the games gameplay is best played with one hand on the mouse and the other on a bottle of vodka. so many repressed memories.

There's no need to spam rolling in Witcher 2, it's just the simplest way to get across, but proper use of bombs and signs work the same and is more spectacular.

the guns felt like toys... just felt like you shooting a childrens water gun toy. I think a lot of stuff in that game was understated or missing entirely, like recoil, weight, shaking and impact... The third Mass Effect did it best.

How can the antiquated shooter mechanics of ME1 NOT be a problem? It took the series 5 years just to catch up to mechanics that were in Gears of War (the first one, not the series).

I tried playing the first Witcher, couldn't get past the combat. Although the story seems to be fairly good from what I've been told.

thats the problem, ME2/3 and GoW use mechanics dependant on player skill, some people prefer stats based combat

Going to be an odd duck here: I really enjoyed playing through both games. The first is definitely dated in a lot of areas, but for me it also has a lot of charm and the writing makes up for it. If you don't mind a bit of a slow start and can deal with a lot of clicking, I'd still recommend playing it.

Superior gameplay dependent on actually playing the game competently is a problem? I'm done.
