The gameplay in both is pretty shitty tbh.
I think too many people split hairs when it comes to judging video games imo (also speaking generally, not just about TW series).
Either a game is complete crap to you or it isn't. I dunno, I guess I see vidya gaems in black and white.
[shameless self-promotion] As it just so happens, I just finished posting my canon playthrough of the first game in a series of 13 story focused videos, enjoy![/shameless self promotion]
The first game SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKS.
As Zero Punctuation put it: "A set of red flags came up that brought me to a serious realization: one-click combat, endless drudging from place to place, quests involving killing x amount of monster y for lazy stationary cockhead zed, This is a mumorpuger!"
It really is. It kinda astounds me how many people are willing to swallow the monster hunter label as a legitimate excuse for endless kill x monster fetch quests. The first game especially is incredibly overrated.
The story's not bad though.
Never played the first one. The second one was free for 360 Gold members some months back, and I tried to play through it, but just couldn't. I might go back to it, someday, but I've been saying that for a while, and I'm doubting I ever will.
Go play NWN 1 and 2 instead before playing W3.
I think GOG has a solid deal running on the whole series. TW1 isn't the best aged gameplay wise but IMO has some well executed quests. Some pitfalls too (**** that swamp to the far ends of hell).
Imo the swamps are the only flaw regarding quest design, that's where you're running back and forth a lot. But then you get to the fourth chapter, which I consider to be one of the best moments in my gaming history. They totally just say, you know what, screw the main quest for a bit and let's take a break. And it works. Once you get back to the main quest the momentum doesn't stop. I've never seen another game pull that off.

You only had to look for the named monsters, the fetchquest were suppossed to be done while you were doing the plot quests from the enemies you came across.

Not to mention all the contract quests, and all the other things that had you running all over the swamp, back and forth, back and forth... They're still fetch quests.

The 1st Witcher bored me to death and I couldn't wait to finish it.
The 2nd one was far better, but the world didn't grip me like lets say Dragon Age, so I ended up playing DA2 much more than W2 although technically it is vastly inferior.
The only problem I had with the monster quests is that you had purchase overpriced books to learn about said monsters.

What about tiny shrubberies that block your path?

It took forever to find a Herring to cut them down with, was still stuck though because the people who wanted them were looking for a taller one so they could get a layered effect.
Makes me laugh how many people on the BSN complain about the fetch quests in the Witcher series as if they haven't played Inquisition, sure there was the odd fetch quest but I don't really remember them being all that intrusive or numerous in nature, usually you would complete them as you were doing other quests, the only fetch quest I can think of in the Witcher series that was obnoxiously tedious was the Harpy feather quest but then I am pretty sure that was part of the joke.

It was a general joke on fetch quests but more likely a diss at Asscreed's feather collection.
Inquisition created new meaning of fetch quests for me, it didn't even tried to cover them with any plot they just decided to go with MMO formula quantity over quality, while TW3 will have side quests on the same level as main quests considering the recent videos.
For OP, this franchise is not for everyone. You will either love or hate the games and you will also need a lot of patience and do background check if you plan to go into them to understand the lore and some characters. The games however has some of the best writing and characters, the politics in second game surpasses Game of Thrones IMO.
A lot of people don't like the protagonist you play: Geralt. But he simply makes the whole thing working for me because he is not some chosen messiah or savior like you are in every Bioware/Bethesda title. Witcher is completely opposite of that, because most of the stuff you will experience in the game you will just rather watch the world burn instead. It also deals with many mature stuff on far better level than most games out there.

I take it CDPR aren't big fans of Assassin's Creed then?

I'm guessing that you don't actually read the BSN (if you did, you would have taken note of all the complaint threads about fetch quests).

The Witcher (2007) was released before Assassin's Creed (AS1 2008) so not likely.
