Witcher series have never had any fetch quests. Not in the scale of DAI or many other games at least.

Even when you were tasked as Geralt to gather something and deliver something from point A to B there was ALWAYS some meaningful context on what you were doing and why. Even if it sometimes was just hunting monsters it still felt like making your living as a mutated monster slayer in grim medieval world if nothing else.

Those that whine about going back and forth through the map endlessly should seriously just learn to plan ahead while playing when going for example to the swamp in WItcher 1; how many quests are there available? Can I do some additional tasks while there so I dont have to do any more additional trips than necessary? Or should I wait for a while yet and see how things develop in Temple quarter and go only when all most obvious quests have run out here?

Seriously, when you just think a little before you do stuff, it doesnt become nearly as tedious over time and you can enjoy your play that much more.

But then again, this very thing is one of the biggest reasons why I enjoy the witcher games so much: they dont underestimate your intelligence and challenge you to create your own way of playing without holding your hand every other second.

I can imagine that those that arent so sharp witted as some, would find it difficult to fully appreciate the more than average complexity of the witcher games.

Some enjoy playing witcher, some enjoy playing mario kart. Different games for different players.

Is this dude really trying to act like enjoying fetch quests in The Witcher makes him more intelligent than the average gamer? Lol

Sigh, this discussion is so pointless as separate thread anyway, that it is a wonder any moderators havent merged this with official witcher thread already.

I have my own opinions about these games, some of us here quite another it seems. Im happy to leave it at that

When people call a game Fetch Quest: The Video game, then it has a problem with fetch quests - context does not excuse this, plus if it's your first time playing you can't really "plan ahead" to reduce the number of times you have to travel back and forth - and that includes talking to everybody before leaving an area.

People call a lot of things a lot of things, that doesn't make it so, either. The Witcher had plenty of meaningful side quests and scripted events. I do agree that "planning ahead" is easier on replay.

Plus calling The Witcher a complex game when the combat is so simplistic that it devolves into a Quick time event were even fans and some of the games developers encourage people to get combat mods to improve the experience is a rather big contradiction (CDProject even hired one of the modders that created a new combat system for The Witcher by the way) and yes I have had fans of the games tell me to get mods to improve my experience, that alone is a red flag on a game if you need to mod it just to enjoy it.  Hell I never really bothered with the alchemy skills since I never once felt the need to use it outside of story required parts.

Combat is not everything, and hey- brace yourself- I prefer TW1's combat to the more action-oriented direction they took it in TW2. It was more fluid, aesthetically better, and you still had tactical choices in signs and alchemy. The game is certainly complex. It's loaded with content and characters, roleplay opportunities (despite having a set character) and interesting quests. Plus the art style and music are beautiful and the world building is more detailed and realistic than some AAA games.

I accept that the series has moved towards the console action gamer and that's just the way it's got to be. But that doesn't make that direction a good thing for everyone.

A little bit of info regarding the political situation in The Witcher. I'll spoilertagg it for those that want to remain unspoiled.

I'm so ridiculously excited for TW3. I was just replaying TW2 the other day. It's even better than I remember. And that's saying a lot because I remember it being phenomenal.

I'd say go ahead and play both games and don't worry too much about not getting into TW3 as soon as it comes out. I may not be able to play it right away - while I did pre-order it, I'm not sure my computer will be able to handle it (it failed a couple of checks on that System Requirements Lab website) and I'm not quite ready to replace my computer yet either.

While TW1 can be unevenly paced at times and can occasionally be tedious, I'd say its good points outweigh its bad points - the history and details of its world are compelling, and most of the important NPCs are pretty interesting. From the perspective of having played Bioware games, I'd say that Geralt is a little less malleable than Shepard or any of the Dragon Age protagonists if you're trying to match his actions and views to what you would do in his place, but he still has a decent range of opinions and possible alignments that you can choose. I do think I'd have probably missed something if I'd jumped straight into TW2.

I would add that I do agree with those who find the "sex cards" dumb and offensive in TW1, though you can usually tell when a dialogue choice is heading in that direction and just avoid them.

TW1 hasn't aged well, you'd be better off watching a youtube playthrough - it can also be a long game if you try and do everything. I remember having fun with TW2, especially the middle bit where the game can diverge into two different areas of a war, but I remember not caring for the final boss as well.

TW1 looks decent enough, better than DA: Origins.

Witcher 1 has its moments, but the gameplay is a glorified Simon Says that uuterly bored me after a few hours. The story mercifully keeps pace, but quest design is hit and miss. Some are pretty great, but it has tons of fetch quests and backtracking. Also, yes, that swamp is one of the worst zones in RPG history. It alone stopped me from replaying the game, ever again. The sex cards are dumb as hell but optional at least.

Witcher 2 is a great game. The combat is still a bit too simplistic for my tastes, and spamming Quen and rolls gets dull after a while, but it works overall, and the quest design is very solid.

You can safely skip TW1 and watch a Youtube playthough of it or something. TW2 should not be skipped, not only because it's good but because it means you will likely be lost upon playing TW3.

How is the gameplay of TW1 so bad? I like rhythmic button pressing a lot better than frantic bashing (which is what most real time combat games seem to do). Also, it combines the sword fights well with the use of the signs, so you can introduce some variation into your play style (aggressive vs. defensive, etc.).

I say play it, don't just watch it. That will also enable you to make your own decisions, which is half the fun. Oh and btw, the story is really cool IMO, quite far out there but really well told (and it does actually offer an ending and closure to all the main issues that are set up in the game).

How much side content is there in both games, and do you feel compelled to complete all of it?

Combat was horrendous in the 1st game, not sure if they fixed it in the 2nd game.

Lots and yes.

One thing that's tricky about both games is that choices you make can cut off some content. But that's one of the strengths of Witcher, that there are consequences to actions.
