It doesn't bother me in the least. Do you know why? Because just like golfers are the only ones reading golfing magazines, gamers (by and large) are the only ones to read sites like Kotaku, or RPS, or IGN. And these types of articles obviously achieve their goal - generate tons of ad traffic.

Gamers go to these sites and either smugly agree with the author that gamers are whiny and entitled or smugly judge the website in question for treating their target customers like trash. Both groups them go all over the Internet, pasting links of this article smugly in every communication niche across the gamut and direct a flood of traffic the site's way. The site gets a hundred times more hits for this flame article than it would for a legitimate, well-researched review and they know it. They want to make more money and they want people to visit their site to see possibly even more articles (and get more money), so they don't care. And if they can pat themselves on the back by telling themselves they are "telling it how it is and if Jane/Joe Gamer can't handle it then we're just too edgy for them," then that's an added sense of smugness for the website as well.

Frankly, I don't blame them. Gamers have shown that they will reward this type of behavior time and time again, regardless of who is perpetuating it. Might as well cash in. Because gamers are, as a culture, undeniably drawn to turf wars and tribe mentality like moths to the flame. We don't want a carefully balanced argument and dialogue, we want a grudge death match, played out for the world at large to see.

We don't want to see that companies across the entire software industry are grappling with legal and economic concepts of software as a service, we instead want to trash a developer who puts in DRM (just as an example). We like our battle lines clear, our targets identified and our objectives outlined for us. We collectively handle our consumer image conflicts like we would your most basic FPS - we encourage open, destructive conflict and we avoid anything more complex than consistently doing the most amount of damage in the shortest possible time frames.

I love gamers. I love being a gamer. But the industry treats us the way it does because there is a lot of money to be made by doing so... and because we line up in droves to make them more money anytime they do. Just think of that the next time you click a Twitter post linking to the latest Saarkesian train wreck post or the latest Kotaku article attacking gamer entitlement. I guarantee you these people make far more money from people who disagree with everything they say than they do from people who think even half their points are valid.

Brilliantly said. The entire mud-slinging fest benefits only one group; the people who make blogs and articles on it and cash in on the clickbait.

No side has any sort of moral high ground on the other. While some people are measured individuals who are willing to work towards their goals in a reasonable way, both groups are utterly overrun with trolls and self-righteous fanatics who call the freaking SWAT on people who burst their ideological bubble. The only people who truly benefit here are the writers who cash in with clickbait ''controversies'' that trump anything coming from Washington DC in terms of sheer pettyness and irrelevance.

Here's one thing I always wondered; a person thinks a Youtube is a hack (let's take Anita for argument's sake). They not only disagree with their premise, but find their arguments laughably stupid, badly researched, made in bad faith, the works. They then proceed to post links to said Youtube video for all to see, complete with a detailled post saying how wrong the Youtuber (Anita in this case) is.

Except, that last step is completely unproductive in an almost comical way. By giving said person publicity, you're making sure more people will see it. By denouncing it as horrible trash, you attract people who will see it, either to confirm your claims, provide a counter-argument or just be fascinated on how much of a trainwreck the video is. Both GG and anti-GG don't realize that, the more they talk about their sworn enemies, the more they ensure these enemies can sustain themselves and keep on doing whatever it is that infuriates the other side so much. It's a self-perpetuating vicious cycle that poisons any attempt to discuss said topics (mysoginy in games and ethics in journalism) while pundits make their cash off the back of this absurdly ridiculous mud-slinging circus.

The Chu memes that came from this are amusing, but I'm finding the KiA posts surrounding GGinDC to be really...SJW lite.

Some more tweets: https://storify.com/...on-twitter-hate

"Twitter will be a better place without the misogynist Joss Whedon."

To be honest, the idea that BW's situation was even remotely comparable to Banner's is pretty ridiculous. "Oh, you turn into an uncontrollable rage monster that can massacre thousands at the drop of a hat? That's just like how I can't have kids."

At the same time, this type of reaction...

Ugh. Humans.

In the USA we like to pretend that the starting positions don't matter much. Some of us actually believe it.

That's a shame.

Most people would be, but I get perverse pleasure out of the SJW narrative getting it's teeth kicked in. More than anything though, I hugely dislike identity politics. The modern practitioners of it are the biggest mental gymnasts ever and there is zero intellectual honesty in it whatsoever. Despite flying the flag of "equality", it is the one ideology that prioritises people's arbitrary or immutable differences over all else.

FWIW, MRA is also identity politics, it's just slanted in a different direction to feminism/SJWism. So it's not like I go that way.

Middle class white person using their position of power proudly being sexist and discriminatory under the guise of promoting equality and tolerance.

As far as SJWs go, it's par for the course, really.

Here is my issue. It's one thing to talk about GamersGate as a single entity - there's an actual identifiable label that people band around and self-identify. But trying to use SJW as an actual identifier, beyond just a pejorative like "bastard"? I don't see how that works.

This. Nobody should ever cave to the demands of the SJW mob, it has happened too much already.

I've said it before and i'll say it again. There's absolutely no upside to catering to these people. Most of them don't even play videogames, as evidenced by the fact Sarkeesian told her 230,000+ viewers to go and play Sword & Sworcery, and the average people playing the game per day went up by one single person.

Game devs bending over backwards to cater to these people makes no sense. It's like a farmer getting their crops destroyed by a swarm of locusts, yet instead of protecting the crops, the farmer helps the locusts destroy them. Then the locusts move on to someone else's crops, and all the farmer has done is lost their produce, and in turn the customers that would have bought it.

They cater because a lot of them have the same mentality- as evidenced by Bioware devs' Twitter feeds. And, they see it as doing a good service which for people employed in the entertainment industry, leads to greater self-esteem.

The myopia is what gets me. I don't like political types of any stripe, but for instance, the whole flap about the Hugo Awards- for thirty years SF/Fantasy has been dominated by one side of the political spectrum. Apparently the only time politics is bad is when the other side starts doing it. Again, that goes back to the self-righteousness and closed mindset.

Yeah it kinda sucks how much they drink from the SJW kool-aid. The Dragon Age forums are guilty of that too.

You know, if it was just games, I might just let it go. But it's not.

The 'speculative fiction ghetto' (as I've seen it referred to by some of these so called 'SJWs') has been bombarded as well. Just like comic books, movies and TV shows, ads and magazines, porn and modeling, even friggin' atheism conferences. Now science fiction and fantasy are just colonialist, misogynistic pipe dreams for straight white men to masturbate with. I'm so damn sick of this people trying to turn art, media and entertainment into their political platform. Is there anything that spells 'first world problems' any more clearly? Is there anything that shows any better how little else they have to complain about, how truly 'privileged' they are? Is it even remotely possible there's anything more petty than this type of behavior?

And it's not just the left, you know. I consider myself to be pretty deep in the progressive/left-wing/liberal part of the spectrum. But I just can't stand radicals, no matter what colors they wear. These 'Social Justice Warriors' are just the left's version of Christian FundamentalistsTM. Those people crying 'misogyny' and 'patriarchy' at every turn are no better than those bellowing about 'family values' and complaining about how the Hugo Awards just don't seem to care about conservatives these days. Same self-righteousness, same sense of entitlement, really.

I can't help but find it equal parts sad and amusing how easily it is to fool people. Jack Thompson can go on and on about how video games cause violence. Everyone will laugh. Just another conservative nutjob, right? Anita Sarkeesian won't stop about how video games cause misogyny. Isn't that insightful? We should ask her over to the Colbert Show. Give her some time on Ted Talk. Why won't developers listen to her more often? Jack Thompson was harassed, oh yes, death threats and everything. Remember that Thompson stand in you got to kill in GTA? The guy had to practically beg journalists to listen to him. Sarkeesian has made a ton of money out of playing the damsel in distress. Which frankly, it's all kinds of ironic.

Yeah, I'm a liberal. As far as I'm concerned, that means I won't go any easier on women than on men. I don't hold to any Victorian ideals that women are pure, fragile little butterflies that cannot possibly do any wrong and will wither away at the slightest opposition. I do wonder how much those who stand in outrage every time a woman is criticized, those who obsess over identity politics... How progressive are those people, really, when they seem to be stuck in the 19th century?

The trouble is once the media let the little SJW's have a voice it didn't stop there.   Now they are everywhere telling people what to think, how to act, and what are the correct thoughts to have. Orwell would have been proud.

Sounds like a good mod idea for "Hatred". Turn all the pedestrians into either black rim glasses and skinny jean wearing hipsters with neon colored hair, hamplanets or radfems with "i drink male tears" shirts.

That mod should also have the player character wear a "that means semen" shirt.

That bit of art in the right picture also explains why the "are games art?" debate is stupid as hell.
