What the hell is gamer gate even about? All this time and I've never been able to understand it. I mean I know how it started, but what's the overall movement about?
The basis behind Gamergate's existence is ethics in game journalism. Gamers started to become more and more aware of this sort of connection between game developers/publishers and game reviewers, leading to misinformed purchases, lies, manipulation, etc etc. A notable example that woke people up being what happened to Jeff Gerstmann, when he was fired from Gamespot for leaving a less than savory review for Kane and Lynch:Dead Men.

Moments like this lead to distrust between gamers and game reviewers. Then fast forward a few years and you have Zoe Quinn. She's an indie game dev. Her ex-boyfriend posted a long article online about how she cheated on him, not only that but apparently with a few people in the game industry that would leave reviews for her game. At least, thats what the point was.
This caused outrage online because it was an example of a game dev sleeping with a reviewer to get a favorable review, which in turn would mislead gamers and yet again lower the value of game journalism.

So the subject of ethics in games journalism came up, but it was also mixed in with a lot of people attacking Zoe Quinn for her infidelity and apparent sleeping around. Zoe went to her friends, and then the ethics in games journalism got mixed in with the third wave feminist crowd, as Quinn was being bullied online. Since then, there's been a battle over, for, and against GamerGate, some still holding on to its original purpose, others claiming that the issues involving women and feminism are more relevant, usually over the subject of misogyny in gaming.

There's been a whole mess since, doxxing, threats, horribly sexist statements about men and women, douchebaggery from all sides, etc etc.
Its not worth being a part of, no matter the side you'd take.
