In the most liberal interpretation of the language, it could mean that individuals that hold a different opinion on the issue of copyright could find all of their websites subject to censorship. The EFF theorizes that "conscientious objectors" to copyright, including the likes of Leo Tolstoy and Woody Guthrie, would all belong to the same group that the bill would target.

On a less theoretical level, it could also mean that sites which offer instructions and discussions on circumvention and ripping could also be blocked, something that does not occur in any other region. This would amount to the banning of a certain type of speech online, allowing major rightsholders, like Hollywood studios, to determine what kind of copyright related speech would be allowed.

****** hell, I can't believe the internet is coming to this, it's like what 1984 was predicting. Hollywood WILL get their way too, they add 508 billion to the GDP, they can afford the most overpriced teams of laywers for as long as it takes to pass these thought crime and VPN regulating laws. They can't make us do this yet, but they've been trying this **** since SOPA and they're still trying and they'll keep on lobbying for it just because they can. Even if the worst doesn't come to pass, it's quite worrying to think that governments have the power to do this. The German people went through two or three consecutive generations of horrible dictators through the nazis and then the stazi and from the news I've been reading it's these guys who are most concerned over the growing powers the internet has on society as a whole. They'd know better than most how all of this can enable some dicktotorship to go kicking down our doors.

****** incompetence. I hate how our politicians are so heavy on banning and censorship, especially when it comes to technology and online content. It doesn't matter what side of politics you are on, they have a hard-on for authoritarian policies.

I can't see them using it to maliciously police thought for Hollywood's benefit or anything, but our governments truly embrace the nanny state and they are completely unafraid of causing collateral damage if it gives them control.

Absolute muppets.

At this rate, I'll be heading back to the Philippines.

at this rate we'd have more internet freedom in china. not all of the powers there are supprotive of their great internet firewall. Problem with australias voters is they've had it easy for so long. a few consecutive generations of the **** the nazis and stazi put them through will fix that.

To be fair, Australia's racist streak will prevent us from ever being the next Sweden. Gender equality in snow plow routes. Business, emergency and productivity hotspots will be cleared after pre-schools and shopping malls.

How else will Oceania protect its copyrighted material from the hordes of Eurasia and East Asia?

This whole thread stinks of crimethink.

I hate how VB is the only recognisable beer for foreigners, so people assume it's what we all drink. VB is crap. Absolute crap. Even amongst the budget/mainstream beers, it's awful. Boag's Draught, Crown Lager or Cooper's Pale Ale are much better.

Putting "Australia" and "Extreme" in the same sentence is redundant, is it not?

The wording is very vague - and I don't know Australia's constitutional principles - but to the extent that this provision actually touches on speech, I think the natural interpretation would be that it's unconstitutional (or rather, the interpretation of it that's so broad to cover speech would be rejected as unconstitutional). Still, it's quite a forceful attempt to stop piracy.

Lol, good luck enforcing it you crazy drunken Ozzies.

Given that discussions of copyright rarely take place on boards dedicated to it, so what are they going to do? Ban every board and block every site which discusses it? Pfffffffffffffffffft. good luck getting that through the court system, the service providers will drag it through the court system for years before anything is done. Then the sites will simply pop up elsewhere or people use proxy servers to circumvent it.

You can't shut down the sites which aren't in the jurisdiction of the Australian judicial system, so what are they actually attempting to achieve? If anything it should have been obvious that shutting down torrent and streaming sites has been like a game of whack a mole.

But Godspeed you crazy bastards, I like a good giggle.

Abbott believes this is the way of the future...

Also if you don't tell a person that doesn't look white to "F*** off and go back to their own country" on Australia day you aren't an Australian...

Drank VB once. I only avoided spitting it up because someone bought me it and I didn't want to seem rude.

I still regret not spitting it up.

What does Australia rate on your dislike list now? :P

That's what I've heard from my Australian friends.

I really feel bad for you people.

If the U.S. ever gets someone like Abbot elected to the Presidency the world is doomed.
