Triggering didn't come up anyplace. That's just you.

Triggering comes up in the Kotaku article about this. It's partly why Patricia Hernandez was praising the decision.

The whole point of DG's blog about this episode was how having multiple women on the writing team points such things out and leads to these kinds of decisions. You may agree with it. I think it shows a growing sensitivity in the writing that seems to be following a greater trend of sanitizing the franchise.

I can't speak to the Kotaku article but when DG posted about it on the forum (or it might have been PW or Alan S.) the description wasn't about triggers but about how the scene conveyed something the writers didn't intend and so was cut.

I know what the scene was - I believe DG also posted on it - and it really isn't a rape scene. It's actually a pretty complicated idea and I certainly would never have even thought of it as having unfortunate implications.

I'm curious to know, if you can share.

I thought about theorising about what precisely was wrong with the scene but tbh I'd be talking out my ass if I did. I honestly don't know the argument against it.

Don't see anything wrong with it if Leliana was unromanced.

But if she was and the scene still occurred, it'd be little more than a smack in the face to Origins players who did the deed with her.

Personally I think Bioware could just use some guys like the doctors again.. people who just kinda weren't afraid of doing things differently. I feel like the people that remain probably want to do some crazy stuff with the game/characters but they don't have these people in the background reassuring them going "Yeah, lets just do that, it sounds crazy but fun."

I mean, it's often the most tortuous or difficult subject matter that ends up being the most important things to have in game, it might not necessarily be pleasant, or fun, but how else is it going to be addressed? If at all?

But I am talking out my ass as well, since I don't remember us getting anymore details than what you laid out.

Gaider elaborated a bit more on his blog, but since he shut it down I lack the means of recovering it.

Cue CSI-BSN.

Huh. Then yeah - I have no idea why someone would find that equivalent to rape. Unless the complaint was that it was rape OF the PC and not BY the PC...?

Unfortunately, the longest substantive discussion of this was on Gaider's defunct Tumblr. Has anybody ever looked to see if that stuff can be accessed from the Wayback Machine?

That's probably it. I can't believe it didn't even occur to me. I wonder what that says about me.

Odd since I understood immediately what the rapey implications were, but I still had the benefit of it having already been framed as such before I ever read about it.

I'm not so sure about those implications meaning the quest path should be scrapped since it sounds kinda cool still (and I think it's far enough removed from RL if nothing else, being about an actual demon), but it's their decision.

I don't think it really says anything.  I remember this around when the convo was first going around here on the BSN and coming to the same conclusion I had in my post up above.

If I remember right (and honestly, my memory might be completely off), I think even on Bioware's side, the reason why it was emphasized how all the women were able to see the problem and not the guys is because it was the *having sex with someone who looks like Leliana* part they actually saw as rape rather than the idea that the protagonist would be having sex with someone who's not actually who they're pretending to be.

Despite coming to the conclusion myself, I guess the reason people may not see it is that it's not really a situation that can really happen much in real life except maybe in the case of twins or so since people can't just make themselves look  and sound exactly like another person.

Well, obviously you're a cis-gendered member of the established patriarchy. You can only think of raping others. :)

Well, I also think it may be the somewhat weird mechanic of having a romance scene be a "win" scenario of sorts. Players work hard to pursue all conversation opportunities, complete all side quests, ensure they say all the right responses and then they are "rewarded" with a romance scene. If the player is given a "free" romance scene, without all the extra work entailed, why wouldn't players be happy about it?

Until you get to the part where relationships and sex aren't mini-games in most narratives or real life.

Romance in these games add an extra layer of complexity to interactions and such. But they often feel forced and unnatural; it's like they exist solely now so players don't start raging about their absence. I remember when I started talking to Cassandra and saw the heart shape icon pop up and I remember then thinking how artificial it felt and how out of place it felt compared to literally every other dialogue choice that was available.
