The significance of Solas' contributions to Jaws of Hakkon will determine whether or not I will play the DLC pre- or post-game.

There's a meta joke that he can be involved in and there are banters and things regarding spirits, but not that significant. I played it pre-end, but certain thematic elements are also relevant post-game, especially if you played an Inquisitor who romanced him. So....either way works.

You also get his promo armor schematic from a drop if that influences your decision one way or another. The one with the fur. http://dragonage.wik...motionalArt.jpg

edit: I had Cassandra and Dorian with me for most of JoH. They both had comments. If you've done Cassandra's quests, bring her along the whole time as she has something that's really good and ties into the main DLC plot. I had Cole instead of Dorian with me for the latter half and he's also pretty good to have along.

Solas being my favorite character I of course arranged my gameplay to have him join me for the Basin region. While I think his comments are insightful and even elaborative in moments, i wouldn't necessarily say that the game would have been significantly different had I, perhaps, brought Dorian instead, another interesting companion to have during Hakkon.

There's a specific area of the basin that involves Elvhen lore that, if brought, Solas contributes to in an intriguing way.

Verdict - if you like his frequent and insightful comments in other areas of the game, I'd recommend. If it matters little then, it will matter little now.

I'd like some more opinions from other people.

Solas is my favourite companion, and LI in the game but I prefer playing it post ending as there are themes in the dlc that kind of resonate quite well with his absence.  I have played it with him there and it is nice to hear a bit more dialogue, but overall I'd go post game.

Another reason for  playing post game is that it seems to be a bit of an unjustifiable distraction from the main quest... Corypheus is tearing up the world,  that's not really the best time for a bit of historical research.  Once Cory's defeated the team need something to do and investigating the original quizzy is a worthy quest for them.

I played it pre and post ending, and preferred it post-game. It "felt" better placed at that point, starting to shape a sense of send-off to the Inquisitor. Pre-ending, it felt like you were just dropping your whole urgent matter of end-of-the-world to go hunting ghosts in the swamp. It was... weird. It's not like the regions in the base game, that contribute back into the main quest, it just felt isolated from your main objective.

Imo, Solas doesn't really contribute anything special enough to merit the strange dissonance of playing it mid-game. I found Cassandra and Dorian contributed a lot more relevant and interesting commentary than him - his comments through the DLC ran on the same line of generic vagueness he does on the regular, while Cass and Dorian really had unique input to give. I'd go for post-game, and leave the egg for his inevitable own DLC.

I found Cole and Cassandra the best companions to take. They had lots to say and share, and Dorian was my main Mage since I played after beating Cory, and he had some great banter too!

I did like Solas' comments on the bits that had to do with the Avvar and their use of spirits, but Cole can also fill in for that role. Personally, if there's something spirity/gods-related going, down I'm going to have both of them in the party, and there's lots of that sort of stuff in JoH. It's fun to have Sera or Cass in the party, too - they poke fun at Solas and his obsession with the Veil and the Fade.
