GM, and other car makers want to make working on your own car illegal due to you guessed it copyright

OMG see this is also why do not need corporations. They are a flawed entity.. This is just plain messed up and wrong.

According to all this even flashing your car ECU could land you in hot water.

And 3 of the companies are American companies that used to pride themselves on people working on their own cars. In a word this is wrong in my oh so very humble opinion.. I blame corporations and their greed for these kind of decisions..

Not surprised that the car makers jumped onboard with this too as they are  assholes too.

It seems this is based on the on-board computer systems, which most people will never touch or even most problems on cars nessarily involve.

That said, this is dumb on the level of game companies saying I don't own my game that I bought physically or I don't own the music I bought from a CD, I'm just renting it.

Well high end luxury cars have been doing this for a while by making their cars only fixable with specially made tools so it's all going down hill from now on.

I'd like to say it can't get worse... but I'd be lying through my teeth. It's going to get worse... way worse.

This is why you trash you ECU and get something by Haltech or a similar company or just stay in the OBD-I era.

I really didn't expect a something like this coming from GM and Ford. Usually it would be a German manufacturer like Mercedes or BMW who would say something so stupidly arrogant. Meanwhile, Toyota and Subaru are selling stripped down, cheap versions of the 86 and BRZ targeted at people who modify them in Japan and New Zealand.

Wouldn't this be like buying a Windows computer and not being allowed to remove that and install Linux?

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/LInux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Unless you're driving a vintage car it's almost impossible to work on your car without having some knowledge of software.

Newer cars are pretty much mobile four wheeled computers (and some even come with wi-fi apparently).

Thank you for the clarifying nerdy reply :D

But to my question isn't this like buying a computer and being told you can't uninstall the OS and put something else in there?
