We shouldn't.I don't see how this means that we should get rid of corporations.
In Europe (varies on the country) it's illegal to do certain modifications, even basic ones to the tires, due to driving safety.
It's every greedy business' dream to be able to legally claim that you don't actually own their products, but rather are just licencing it so that they can dictate the terms in which you're allowed to use it.
Although I can't see people accepting it in the slightest. If the car companies are allowed to do it, then the rest of the world is going to be not very far behind. Right now such claims are largely limited to software due to the fact that it's not really like anything else and not a physical product. Even then, it's virtually impossible to prevent people from modding single player games if they really want to and in MP all you can do is ban them from your servers.
Also, if somebody modifies their car's entertainment system to be able to pirate music for them they should just be exempt from the rule, because at that point they've probably put more work into the damn thing than the people who built it. The process for setting something like that up would be so stupidly complicated that the only real reason to do it would be bragging rights.
Well, they do have a point there. You shouldn't be able to just take someone else's designs and make your own. I also don't want to share the road with these self-made cars. There's a manufacturing revolution around the corner. When 3D printing becomes common it's going to take manufacturing away from industry and into the hands of enthusiasts. I think this move is the car industry trying to get in front of it. Someday people will be assembling their own cars they've printed out from parts - so they want those parts considered copyright.
You can get close, and for the low low price of only $16 699
