Wow the mages seem like total jerks if you don't pick them

I held off visiting Redcliffe until after doing the Templar mission, but went there before healing the rift. The mages, as expected, weren't there anymore, but to my surprise there was barely a mention of them, and no sign that anything bad had befallen them.
Then when it came to them attacking Haven, I was pretty shocked to find them appear just as they were. As regular mages. Fighting for Corypheus. What a bunch of a**holes!
Granted the Templars all getting baked on red lyrium seemed unbelievably stupid, but when they turned up transformed there was still something quite tragic about them. The impression I got from the game was that they were tricked into taking the red lyrium, which enslaved them to Corypheus' will. Much like the wardens were duped into doing what he wanted.
I don't know if I missed something important but it seems like the mages just chose this with minds unaffected. Its there anything more other than the "we sold ourselves to Tevinter because we had no allies" explanation? Because that just doesn't seem like it'd hold much weight with people who just rebelled against Circle restrictions.
Why on Earth did these folks willingly join the ranks of the Big Bad if Thedas? It suddenly gives a lot of credence to Vivienne's attitude towards them...

The rebel mages were brainwashed, just like the Warden mages.

The red Lyrium twisted them into monsters, they were no longer able to resist. It happens to whatever faction you don't pick.

On a whim I decided to see what picking the mages was like for once
And so yeah, just an impression I got but,
Fiona also seems to act ungrateful if you do pick her, like the inquisition's something nasty she can't bare to go with,
even though you just saved her and the other mages butts...could not stand her attitude
So I reloaded and choose templars (like I usually do in my playthroughs), I mean at least they were grateful for our help

Maybe detecting the tone in others' voices is difficult for you, but how on earth did Fiona seem ungrateful? Or did you recruit the mages as prisoners instead of allies? If it's the former, why would you expect someone to be grateful for being imprisoned?

It was just a tone in her voice, before you choose whether to willingly take the mage or not,
she just seems snotty about choicing between the inquisition and imprisonment
A lot of people would have loved to join the inquisition, but she acts like it's a chore
Even though she offered her people to slavery with a magister
Just seems hypocritical, in my opinion
Anyway, don't blame me for not liking her, there's just some characters some people don't like
I don't mind if other people like her, heh

I don't mind her one way or the other, but I would have a hard time showing ire to Alistair's mom, either way. Anyway, if it makes you feel better, you can talk to her at Skyhold, and she expresses more gratitude over the chance you gave her and her fellow mages. ![]()

I got Alistair and Anora both showing up if my world version, kinda cool
That's nice, though, maybe she calmed down after and realized the inquisition wasn't so bad
I still don't like her though

Me too! Those two ruling together while I pal around with Loghain is my ideal outcome. ![]()
Lol, to each his own. I think she was initially suspicious or worried that the Inquisition might not be better or safer than the Venatori. After all, she does ask the terms of the arrangement. But, at least she was smart enough to realize it's still better than being exiled.

Haha I did the same thing with Loghain
Yeah, I would probably be suspicious of people (and have trust issues) who say they just wanna help, and don't seem to have motives,
after all that with the magister, too
After all, most people who say they just want to help, generally have some scheme behind it to use instead
