This will be my helpful guide to the new mage in DAIMP, ZITHER! (Yes, I know that it always being in capitals can be annoying, but it fits his personality). -Disclaimer- This is preliminary and is by no means the most comprehensive guide that will be put out there, and is based on three hours of gameplay. I will update this post when possible with new information.
ZITHER! is/was a musician that rose to prominence in Orlais, but was displaced when the mage rebellion started, since he is a mage. ZITHER! sees the Inquisition as an opportunity to become famous again, although it involves more than playing music. Sort of.
The Basics
Spoiler
ZITHER! does not have conventional skills like the other characters in multiplayer. Instead, he plays songs that the player has to manually input.
His skill trees are in the standard format, with both passive and active skills to unlock, with upgrades to the active skills.
ZITHER! starts with all four button inputs filled by default, and you cannot change those inputs.
These inputs are the three chords used to input songs, and the ability that activates the song.
The three chords are Cold Chords, Electricity Chord, and Fire Chord. As chords in real life, these are the notes that go into making a song. The different types of chords relate to different effects, fire being tied to offense, cold being related to defense, and electricity being related to speed.
To input a song, three notes must be queued up in the place holder to set up the song. This is a good time to mention the ZITHER! gets an additional piece of UI, which is similar to this:
[ ] [ ] [ ]
These are the placeholders for the chords, with the chords being input from right to left. For instance, pressing Cold, Fire, Electricity will produce this:
[C] [F] [E]
Each song needs three specific types of chords to be in the slots, but not in any order. Thus, a song that requires Cold,Cold, Electricity, can be input as:
[C] [C] [E] or [C] [E] [C] or [E] [C] [C]
All three will produce the same song, which is the ability called "Bolstering Ballad".
Once the prerequisite chords are in the placeholder, that song title will appear below the boxes, like this:
[C] [C] [E]
"Bolstering Ballad"
Once the song name is shown, the ability can be activated by pressing the button mapped to "Song of Magic". This will consume 25 mana, regardless of which song was activated, and will produce the effect.
Songs have no cooldown, so the only limiting factor is mana.
ZITHER! carries a lute around everywhere, and thus cannot carry a staff in hand. As a result, the staff is slung over his back, and ZITHER! waves his hand to fire basic attack projectiles at enemies. This does not produce the usual basic combo of other mages, and is instead a constant, but slower, barrage of projectiles. ZITHER! can also keep moving while firing basic attacks, which is an invaluable skill.
This is the conclusion of the basics to casting spells with ZITHER!. I will likely go into more depth later discussing the various songs and abilities available in great detail. From my initial judgement after a few hours of play, I can say that ZITHER! may be one of the strongest characters yet.
