Something I´ve been working on for some time now. I´d just like to have some feedback.
Something I´ve been working on for some time now. I´d just like to have some feedback.
I've always wanted to see a Mass Effect game with XCOM mechanics, it's cool to know that I am not the only one with those ideas floating around my head.
As far as the content of your idea is concerned, I really like how you worked in the various details with the different bonuses from armor, cover, shields, abilities, etc, and I really like the idea of have to work with specific factions (and juggle their priorities) in order to gain sufficient credit flow and resources. I would personally try to avoid having hero units from the three Mass Effect games in such a title though, or at least restrict them to specific game modes outside the main campaign.
The reason for this is because XCOM is more about the common soldiers under your command, while the heroes in Mass Effect are frequently able to take on whole armies by themselves. Nothing against your idea, its just the nature of the two games, one is a management sim and the other is a power fantasy. Playing as Garrus, or Shepard in such a game would be awesome, but they would either be incredibly OP, or would be toned down to the point of just being a common grunt with Garrus and Shepard's faces. I am not against having high level officers with tons of upgrades and/or specialized classes being very powerful in their own right, but like XCOM (especially XCOM: Long War) they shouldn't be end-all-be-all choice when going into a battle.
Speaking of specialized classes, or races I should say, what about bringing some of the more 'alien' aliens into the game as an option for your specialized forces? Take the concepts of the MEC trooper and the SHIV from XCOM, and expand on that with aliens like the Elcor and Rachni (for example). Obviously, I am a little biased about the Rachni (in case my avatar didn't give it away already
), but I think that bringing in species like them and the Elcor can help fill the more specialized roles of your forces while at the same time, expanding on the standard roster of playable aliens like the Turians, Asari, Salarians, etc.
The Rachni could function in a manner quite similar to the Chrysalids in XCOM, namely your rapid assault forces with the added benefit of ignoring shields and a portion of armor protection in enemies. The Rachni would be quick, and capable of scaling walls, but they would have low health compared to the other forces under your command. Hit and Run tactics would play big role with their deployment, and like the SHIV, the Rachni could provide a cheap/early edge on your frontline assault front until the player is able to get upgrades and research for their Vanguards and Soldiers. Unlike the SHIVs though the Rachni could still earn XP, and gain upgrades, but they would definitely be the glass cannons of your lineup. For the Rachni soldiers that survive long enough, and achieve their equivalent of an officer rank, maybe have the option to make them into Brood Warriors, with increased stats, plus some biotic abilities. Not quite true to lore, granted, but it would provide a nice reward for those players that can keep their space bugs alive.
The Elcor would be an obvious stand-in for the MEC troopers, albeit a slower MEC trooper with a lot more firepower. According to the lore, the Elcor soldiers wear the equivalent of tank cannons on their backs when they enter combat, earning them the description of 'walking tank' by their opponents. Maybe have the player get the option to invest in Elcor troops over Atlas or YIMIR mechs, with the Elcor providing the potential for more utility at the cost of slower speed and being vulnerable to injury and death. Upgrades to VI targeting systems, could allow the Elcor trooper to deliver more actuate attacks, and their sheer strength could allow them to break down walls, or engage tough opponents in melee with a greater chance of success (outside of the Krogan or Brood Warrior Rachni) than other races.
Another possibility is that these species could be rewards for helping a specific faction and gaining their trust. The player assists the Courts of Dekuna enough and they get a small cadre of Elcor troopers, the player helps the Rachni Remnant (for example) they get a clutch of Rachni soldiers, etc.
If you were planning to mod a game to suit your ideas (sorry I can't help as I don't have any experience modding
) I would recommend the game Xenonuats. It's not as flashy, or 3-D as XCOM, but from what I understand, its easier to work with. Just in case you were wanting to try and implement your ideas.
Wow this is some awesome and extensive feedback, really appreciate it. I´ll try to answer some of your concerns as best as I can.
When it comes to the hero units, the idea wasn´t really to even have them playable. It was just something fun I wanted to come up with, to see how the mechanics I´ve come up with (and XCOM of course) could reflect a certain character in a turn based tactical setting. I guess moving them to the "other stuff" section would make more sense.
As for the Rachni, I honestly just forgot about them, because of their (arguably) small significance to the events of the ME storyline. It really comes down to just two missions in the entire series where they have the spotlight, Noveria in ME1 and the mission with Grunt in ME3 (+ Ravagers as reaper units for the rest of the game). I really like your idea, but for obvious reasons I´m not going to copy it.
The Elcor/MEC idea on the other hand has been in my mind for some time. I have been trying to come up with unique skillsets, weapons and abilities but I´m not willing to add those things in until I have a solid idea. I had the idea of having your own YMIR mechs with ranks and upgrades but a robot just doesn´t have as much personality as Tom "Godlike" Hendrick, the human adept who always misses his biotic attacks.
I did however acknowledge the Elcor "walking tank" status with their faction bonus, lowering the prices of special/heavy weapons if you are in good terms with them ^^
Just to clarify, this is not going to happen. I´m not a modder or a developer, I just had an itch to write down stuff I have had in my mind for a few years. It´s just for my own entertainment (and hopefully others too). I will keep working on it, just don´t expect it to become reality, unless of course Firaxis and Bioware see it and team up.
