There's something I like to do with warrior Hawke. First I need to note that I make warrior Hawke aggressive, seems to suit a berserker-reaver quite well. I mean, how friendly of a person would that combination actually result in? Anyway, I start Hawke off using a sword and shield weapon style. But right before the switch to act 1 once your year of servitude starts, I switch him to 2-handed weapons. So from a story standpoint, he uses a different style than Carver but after he dies Hawke switches to his little brother's style. He might be an @sshole because of his aggressive disposition, but he really does care about his family. He decides to use the style his brother used as a way of remembering him and honoring him, in a weird way almost letting Hawke be the warrior that Carver could have grown up to be if he had been given the chance. And when you think about it, it was a rather big choice to make too. It means that all of Hawke's years of learning to use regular sized swords and how to properly use a shield with it went to waste, because he switched to a totally different weapon type and style. It would be like getting to level 14 in sword and shield and suddenly switching to 2-handed weapons without respeccing. Thankfully, I don't actually waste any talent points gameplay-wise since I actually upgrade the the style he's going to later use while just using the sword and shield style for its auto attacks until I hit act one and switch to my main style for the rest of the game. Although I could just use a maker's sigh next time... Actually, I think I'll do that. It will make the prologue much easier (I play on harder difficulties which means that I could actually stand to not gimp myself in the prologue).

Anyone like this little headcanon?

This is actually a nice little headcanon, I might have to try that when I replay DA2, I've still not completed a warrior run yet, it's the only class I've yet to do?

I do something similar when I'm playing as a Mage and I respec from a Blood Mage to a Spirit Healer immediately after Leandra's death, simply because I feel that if Hawke had even dabbled in the stuff before, that would be the moment they'd refuse to do so ever again... which fits with their extreme hatred of it in DAI?

Going Spirit Healer also make sense from a story standpoint, as we see that Hawke hates losing people and so learning this in the hopes that it can prevent anything like that happening again? It'd also be why they'd feel so bitter and betrayed by Anders (if not romancing him), as they likely spent time learning the spec from him?

I... Actually do that with my mages. I never touch blood magic, but that is why Hawke chooses spirit healer. They're tired of losing people, and they feel like maybe if they had spirit healing they could have saved Bethany. Maybe or maybe not, but spirit healing certainly would have helped her chances. And I doubt she learned it from Anders. Anders isn't half as good as she is at it, and she was strongly rivaled against him so I doubt she could have stood him long enough to learn from him.

I'll have to think about this for my warrior run.  (Started it, haven't gotten beyond the prologue yet though)  It especially makes sense if you're friends with or romancing Fenris - gives Hawke more of an excuse to spend time with him.  I did start out with S&S just to have more of a use for the DLC shields since I rarely bring Aveline, but I like this headcanon too!

And Sifr, I like your idea about blood mage!Hawke too.  Although Anders' tree encompasses abilities similar to both Blood Mage and Spirit Healer, I usually just give him the skills from Vengeance for completion's sake and forget about them otherwise.

(Very belated edit to fix a typo I just now noticed.)

You could play it such that your Hawke is a diplomatic, nice guy/gal who is just bottling up all the rage to let it all out in combat.

I had a crazy Merrillmancer (double crazy) who ate up Merrill's ideas of blood-magic being "just another type of magic" and drank dragon-blood to be a Reaver. It did not sit well with him, though, so as the story went on I went to the Mirror of Transformation and aged him at the beginning and end of each act. By the end of it he was gray, losing hair, even his skin was getting affected. That was my "screwball" playthrough. I did a lot of things there that did not make sense.

It might just be my cold-addled brain talking, but this actually sounds awesome.

Although it is sort of meta-gaming I made a similar character before but went Beserker-Templar. As Carver specializes in Templar by endgame. I mean Hawke meets a LOT of Mages, it could make some headcanon sense
