I bought some chests last night and didn't get any of the 3 new characters. I had been saving materials from the weekend but I can't craft their basic armor to unlock them. The option of crafting their basic armor is not even there, even though their cards are there in the character selection. Is this normal?
Make certain your game is fully updated. I've seen some console users note that you need to download some additional updates that does not get offered automatically.
If you are on PC, enable auto updating in Origin, that should take care of it.

I'm on PS4, I'll check for more updates today.
Note that for PS3 and PS4 in Europe, you will have to wait untill tomorrow.
