Read through everything in the skill tree, it will be helpful.
I'll try to keep it simple,
You have 3 "notes"
-Fire (F)
-Cold ©
-Electric (E)
Each song requires you to play 3 notes, then activate it with your last ability (PS4 it is R1)
At the start you only have 3 songs
C-C-C - barrier
E-E-E - speed boost
F-F-F - fire attack
As you level you learn new songs,
example - Power Chord - F-F-E
Once you unlock the new songs you can play them at any point. On your in game screen there are 3 icons that will show what your latest notes were, and will even list the name of a song if you are able to play it. Each time you play the song with your 4th button, it takes 25 mana. You can keep spamming whatever song you have queued as long as you have mana (takes 25 mana per cast). You will keep using the same song until you use different notes to change it. If your note combination is not a song you know, it will do nothing.
That is the basics more or less. You just need to learn how the songs work, like barrier. I didn't know what it did at first but it you spam it over and over the barrier keeps getting bigger until you have a full one or run out of mana.
Few smalls pieces of advice, get song duration increase and any ability to increase mana regen. Maybe just go in a game alone and mess with the songs before you fight anything and get a feel for it.

Short summary (Xbox Controler):
On X,Y and B is one specific chord mapped (X=Fire,Y=Frost,B=Storm). The latest three chords you pressed (e.g. X,B,B line up in the UI in the middle of the screen. These three chords determine which song you can play with RB.
So, you start at level 1 with the 3 basic songs:
X,X,X is your damage song, dealing aoe damage on the target.
Y,Y,Y generates barrier for everyone inside your blue circle.
B,B,B gives the players inside your circle movement speed.
Playing a song costs you mana. While leveling up you can choose additional songs that have specific combinations of the three chords.

he's very confusing to use at first. I actually took short notes on paper to reference at first.
The strings are easy enough to learn though and once u have them down you'll find that this character has access to more abilities (without cooldown) than any other kit in the game. I think he can basically hold a max of 6?? abilities at one time, possibly more.
As a general rule, default to keeping barrier up and only swap out for different chords when the opportunity is there. The biggest mistake I see ppl make on this kit is trying to juggle too many buffs at one time, and thereby exhausting all mana and not having any left over for barrier.
Barrier is the most important priority--always.
Also, auto-attack is key on this character. There's an ability in the right-hand tree that grants you a "heal on hit" like ability for MANA, which means that everytime you auto-attack, you gain 4% mana regen out of the damage dealt for each attack. Therefore, it's a good idea to throw in auto-attacks every chance you get, as it will speed your mana recovery.
This, combined with combat clarity and the passive that boosts mana regen when near allies, and you'll become a literal barrier machine that puts the keeper to shame.

This. It's hilarious. Get a bunch of ranged characters, stand in a circle around ZITHER! and blast away at the barrier song. You literally cannot die.

Wonder if barrier ring does anything for him?
Shouldn't. The ring empowers barrier the skill, not the actual barrier. Otherwise it would work on the AW and elementalist as well.

Actually the keeper and Zither are still friends. Static cage combined with Power Chord does stupid high damage. Plus the keeper can step in if Zither is in trouble.
If anything, this is actually a more liberating relationship, at least for the keeper. Instead of focusing exclusively on barrier, she can now pay attention to other skills.

Let's hope it does.

Actions speak louder than words. Don't tell me you don't feel warm and safe when the nice lady Keeper cast her barrier on you right when things are going sour. When will your faves.

Do not tempt me with foul elf-loving words! Let the pointy ears know and see that the true magical power in Thedas is in fact a 'shemlen'!
J/K The Keeper was my favorite mage class until Zither, but really, who can resist the tug of his lute strings and stay faithful? ![]()

Wonder if barrier ring does anything for him?
we tried testing this in beta but it was hard to verify. as far as we can tell the barrier ring is not compatible with Zither's barriers... but the devs would need to confirm this.
Also if anyone needs advice on virtuoso play I wrote a guide: http://forum.bioware...he-hybrid-bard/

I make good use of elves, they tend my garden.
glad I looked in this thread, now the placement of notes and such has more meaning to me, my one and only game I was just pounding away at buttons.
I think this calls for a quick solo easy mode game to just test out button combos.

It doesn't. Tried it just to be sure.
On another note, I actually developed a headache from the constant lute noise. I don't think I can play it with sound anymore.

Forget barrier spamming - you need to play the WHOLE repertoire! Remind me to not buy the tickets if you ever go on stage.

im liking this character.
His skills didnt make sense when reading them from the skill tree, but playing around in solo and I was able to figure out how he works pretty quickly once the saw the song magic icon switched when hitting the cords.
So im guessing he's unique as he can use any of the abilities he's learned, even if they aren't equipped to a button???
With the three cords and the song magic, I dont see how he can fit any other ability on the buttons since you need all four of them just to use any of the other skills.
EDIT: HE DOES PLAY THE SONGS HE LEARNED!!! Even if they aren't assigned to a button. This is awesome. This dude is becoming my favorite character for team play.
