The GOG Galaxy Client is now available for open beta.  The client is completely optional so there is no need to get it but it does offer a lot of features that today's gamer seem to expect.

-Achievements

-Friend lists

-Auto updating.

It does have a few unique features though to make it more consumer friendly

-Cross-Play with games on Steam (So you don't have to worry about being gated from players due to were the game was bought)

-Full Stand-alone backup copy installer so you can save to an external drive or disc (properly, something other clients are not good at)

-Auto-update can be turned on and off for every game.

-Roll-Back: So if a patch comes out and you don't like it or it broke something you can revert to a previous build (coming soon)

-Feature disabling: If you don't like Achievements or chat features you can just turn them off.

-Privacy: The client doesn't track any personal data

-Optional: Just want to run the game, go right ahead.

Have faith in Gaben.

In Gaben we trust.

Our salvation is through Gaben.

Gaben told me so.

Rather not, last time I did he took away the ability to legally own our games.

Looks like they will be including the ability to mod the client or even allow people to build there own client that is compatible

<From the Galaxy FAQ>

  • 10. Can we edit, modify, or tweak GOG Galaxy?

If you like to tinker, feel free to start building your own features or even entire clients compatible with GOG Galaxy, assuming you can figure things out right now. We won't actively work against attempts to improve the GOG Galaxy experience, although we can't promise not to break anything as we continue to develop our own tools and infrastructure.

Got an invite a few days ago already. Good to know it's in open beta now.

I hope they release an API. They are in serious need of an API
