1) That Beard.

- Just as with the Legionnaire, his card shows a glorious beard. However, the Legionnaire has some satisfying muttonchops which makes up for the outrageous lies. The Avaar, unfortunately, is beardless. Once again the cards lie to me, and my heart is broken.

 

2) That voice.

- Is that the Arcane Warrior's voice actor? I don't hear much difference between the two, and I find myself disappointed by how. . .unsatisfying that voice is.

3) He's not Zither!

 

- ZITHER!

. . .also he's basically the Katari with that elemental mechanic tied into him. This pleases me. He's fun to play otherwise, but those three things up there? Shameful.

He's kinda fun (I'm using charge, whirlwind, Electric field and Samson's stomp-jump), but given he's lacking in knockdown, and guard generation, feels weaker than the Katari.

Fine in Threatening, i think Katari for Perilous though.

His only 'reliable' guard generation is Block and Slash, which is an attack I adore. I'll be using it along with the Samson jump, whirlwind, and. . .I dunno. . .the wannabe charge?

EDIT: But seriously, that voice. I keep expecting him to say 'I once dreamed of seeing places like these'. I was hoping for something more... guttural. deep. Throaty. Not- Elf man voice. ;_;

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks of Cillian when they hear the Avaar. I first encountered one whilst playing my AW and I kept getting thrown. Having not playing one myself, I would say that aesthetically the beardlessness seems like a bit of a let-down (doesn't he have a beard in SP, or am I thinking of his chieftain?), but the few I've Zithered! with haven't been face-down in the Fade particularly, so that's nice.

I enjoy the elemental flavor of his attacks and i like everything else about him, dialogue and alt costume.

the card is misleading- in SP he never had a beard.

However, i do agree that he suffers from 'unreliable' guard generation.

Hes fun, but i wouldn't take him to perilous anytime soon - not yet anyways

Oh, I'm glad someone besides me noticed the voice similarity.

 

I played with a friend tonight who got him in her Dragon Chest, and an Arcane Warrior was also in the room with us. She kept asking if I'd just heard her Skywatcher say this or that, but 90% of the time I had not... or, rather, had thought it was the Arcane Warrior talking.

 

I was terribly confused. I was also running around a brand new map all wide-eyed while Vinsomer shot lightning at me, so overall my Luka was just very, very confused all around.

Agree on the voice.  Can take or leave the beard.  Have my own already, and don't need one in my videogames.  Isabela's breasts on the other hand, I am lacking.  Does that make me weird enjoying her...character?

I'm certain it's the same voice actor, and not even a different voice in and of itself.

. . .and is it the same Skywatcher (which is a title and religious role amongst the Avaar, not a name) that we meet in the Single-Player? I think so, not an important fact it's just-

I did a build focusing on cold.  His action animations are just too slow for how little damage he can take.

- No bounce like Isabela.

- No thigh-high boots like Isabela.

- Not the same voice actor as Isabela (I admit I haven't heard her banter yet as I've only played a few games and the family was in the house so I kept the game muted.)

I finally got around to trying him out tonight,.. and while the hate may be a bit premature, I also feel it isn't completely unwarranted.

 

I've done pretty good with the Avvar so far, but he is not an easy class to play.

 

I was able to solo the first 4 rooms on threatening at level 9, solo'd the first 2 rooms at level 5.

 

I'm able to get quite a bit of guard built up at level 9, but the problem is losing the guard fairly quickly.

 

I've been in party's where other Avvars around me are dropping like flies.

 

Some things that might help survivability if you are struggling (Beside HoK of course)

 

Upgrade Hakkon's Charge and use it often. It triggers "cold/ice smash" from Korth's might which you will also want to upgrade. Using Korth's might with ice smash triggered will give you guard per enemy hit, and also damage resistance.

 

You will also want to grab Chilled Defense passive, since alot of your attacks will be causing chilled, to get the damage resistance.

 

Grab Rage of the Avvar and upgrade this ability as well.

 

The main problem I see with the Avvar from my perspective so far is, the high vulnerability to ranged attacks. If he had more natural resistance to ranged attacks I think he would be just fine. He loses guard extremely quick, and lacks evasion.

If find that he is a paper tiger when compared to the Katari. He also seems to lack armor bonuses. As far as Guard goes, the problem isn't so much that he can't generate it, but that he loses it so fast to basic attacks on Threatening and above. This goes back to the issue of Guard in general, but I think he could use some slight re-tweaking when it comes to defense. I think one quick way of making him a bit tankier would be to alllow him to generate Guard against chilled/frozen enemies. There's a passive that grants DR bonus when near chilled/frozen enemies, so that could be attached to it.

I've got extreme end game gear and promotes, and only now do I absolutely wreck everything with the Avvar. I hated him with no gear and promotes in Beta.

Hakkon's Charge (or chilling tremor), Korth's Might, Crushing Leap, Lady's Wrath.

 

Always Keep Lady's Wrath up, always use the Korth's Might after an active ability. Spam active abilties -> Korth's Might /w respective elemental trigger

With how much experience do you call him paper tiger? I have yet to unlock that char myself so I can't say but so far from playing with Duelist (albeit a low level one) I'm taking a lot more and bigger hits than with other melee rogue characters. 

Once I get to craft some better armor for her I will see if that's actually true, but for Avvar too it might be the lack of proper armor.

I'm starting to enjoy the Avvar and I know where I need to make tweaks. 

 

He's all about them combos and can clear a room easily if you have play him right.
