I've been pondering this for some time now. How is Bioware going to go about making the ending to Mass Effect 4?  Are they going to give it any particular attention when the game gets closer to release?  By that I mean, address any particular concerns people might have?  I can almost picture it.  There's going to be some tweets, some PR bullshite, etc, etc. I can already tell.  At any rate, things are going to get extremely awkward the closer this game gets to completion.

Let me ask this as well-What kind of ending do you want for ME 4?  Would it even matter to you at this point?  And I'm going to clarify something-This isn't an umpteenth ending hate thread from me (not this one anyway).  I'm merely curious as to how this is going to play out.   You can't bring up Mass Effect in discussion anymore without someone talking about the endings (on the BSN, it's more than likely me, I'll own that), but even outside of BSN, it's the exact same way.

I just wonder what Bioware will do.  Will they learn from their mistakes?  Make multiple endings that depend on the choices you make?  Or will they simply capitulate, make a super happy ending (That everyone on BSN loves to hate) to misguidedly appease the naysayers?  KEYWORD misguidedly!  Or, will they just end it on a cliffhanger for yet another sequel?  My vote is cliffhanger.

Considering it's the start of a new story with new characters, I don't feel like ME3's ending has anything to do with the next game's ending. ME1 also ended with a cliffhanger, but resolved the major plot point specific to that game, my guess is they go with something like that.

Meh, I would rather let the creators not to be pressured by fan request and what not. I would rather them create however they feel is an appropriate ending that doesn't please anyone but themselves, as it is there IP and what not. However I agree that it's almost inevitable that they'll have to answer ending questions once the game is properly revealed (hopefully at E3). You can have a proper ending, and not have a cliffhanger. ME1 and 2 felt like proper endings without leaving unanswered questions. Leaving the player with questions with what is to come not with what had come before.

It'll be a carbon copy of the ending to Inquisition.

I think it's a case of whether BW have "burned their bridges" so to speak, and alienated (no pun intended) too many people with the ME/3 debacle.

Will we get "Shepards Tale 2.0"? Will we get "Mass Effect:Inquisition"? Or will we get "Mass Civilization: Voyager Effect"? (that ones a mouthful, I know)

Or do we trust BWEA to actually come up with something original and innovative? If it was just BW I might be inclined to say yes, as they do have the ability. But the "elephant" in the room i think is EA because those spawns of darkness and evil may very well f**k it up once again.

They'll do what they'll do, people will complain and swear them off, then be back for the next game.

The cycle will continue.

A lot of the people working on this game worked on the previous 3 games, i'm not going to be a cynic about it.

I think it will be very different to ME3. Yes, I do think they have learned from it.

They will put a lot of effort into it and try and make it

-more emotionally uplifting

-satisfying to the player

-genuinely different cutscenes based on different player decision (no red, blue, green) although the consequences will be much smaller (for me5)

-I don't necessarily think they will be conservative, they could still try a non-cliche happy ending.

-I doubt the player will die in most endings

Prediction:

It's 2020.

We're on the Mass Effect 5 boards.

And Iakus is still complaining about the ME3 ending.

Honestly I thought ME2 did the best job of endings. They range from...

  • YAHOO! You and your whole crew survived, the terminator is dead, you gave "TIM" the finger, and Shepard and his/her love interest get a more-or-less happy ending. High Fives 4 everyone :P
  • OR your entire crew is worm-food including you. Cerberus has a mega-reaper, you cannot even import your save into ME3, and the Galaxy is screwed. Good Job Hero! :D

Alas the conditions for the best ending are really easy to achieve but if tweaked right ME4 could do a good job implementing it to be satisfying to players.

I would hope they already know how the game ends. With ME3 they'd already had years to think of the ending but they didn't work one out until they were already halfway into development of the freakin' game. Developing by the seat of your pants is no way to make a great game.
That said, how would I know how I want ME4 to end? I have no idea how it will even start.

You know Mac Walters is a Creative Director, right? The guy, who wrote the ending for ME3 is a Creative Director of the new game.

I really do have faith in Montreal team though. (like really do, I liked Omega despite some of it's flaws, and i think Omega is one of the best ME DLCs)

They already knew how it would end, but some people put information in the demo that doesn't supposed to be there, and although there are people "perhaps many people" who did not like the end, for me it was almost perfect, they let me save not one or two but all, even civilizations that were lost long ago and if in the next game they put a decision like that i would rather sacrifice the main character that to kill entire civilizations.

Practically every BioWare game ends with a cliffhanger or some type of signal that more is going to happen.

As a matter of fact, I can only think of one BioWare game that did not end with a cliffhanger or signal, and even then a sequel was created for that game.

No that I am complaining, but I am certainly not. I was just stating a nice fact.

I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say, but if you're saying they changed the ending after the leak that is wrong. The ending wasn't changed, but even if it had been that would have been their decision. Casey Hudson and Mac Walters came up with the ending on their own, without running it by anyone else on the writing/creative staff, halfway into development with the primary goal of making development easy and cheap.

I think they should go for a loop. When the game ends, it will transition smoothly to a beginning of a new game (same game, not next in series).
