Um, I don't know if it's the voice or the way he talks but he just seems off and not like the Xenon I remember where he talked really slowly and quietly. The writing is perfect though for sure.

According to IMDb it IS Nicholas Boulton (Hawke as well as original Xenon), but I agree that it seems off as well. But, from having seen him in a non-voice role, I can tell you that his normal voice is closer to Hawke, whereas Xenon is very affected. And you have to consider that the original Xenon was done about four years ago. I think that the most notable difference is in the cadence and his voice in DAI makes him sound a tad less decrepit than in DA2.

Yeah, he sounded similar so thanks for confirming that. I think it has to be his delivery more than anything.

Maybe he's drinking energy drinks or just got oiled. ;)

Maybe all the money Hawke spent paid off and he was able to reverse his aging a little. Andraste knows I gave him enough...

And I agree OP, it sounds different. I think the recording is clearer than the one in DA2. Less muffled and he's very loud now.

I remember when people thought Sandal in Witch Hunt was being voiced by a different actor.

Vocal evolution, folks!

Maybe it's reverse aging like Benjamin Button.

I think it's his newly acquired (female) urchin who has invigorated the old guy.

Her tender ministrations have had benefits that go beyond keeping his skin from cracking and sloughing off!  ;)

That's kinda disturbing. I think it's just the rejuvenating oils, maybe he found better ones.

Apparently the Urchin was a girl, well according to the codex entry.. Unless something happened to the boy in DA2 and so had been replaced by a girl. Not sure, I loaded up DA2 to check out the Emporium (to compare) and he called the Urchin a "he" so I'm kinda confused about it.

Yeah presumably it's been a couple of years so he found himself a new urchin, I'm guessing the person who delivered the message to the Inquisitor might be the old urchin.

Yeah, that's what I said above.  The urchin in DA2 was a he, but by the time of DAI it's a she;)

His voice reminds me of Palpatine. I don't mind it, but it was this "wait" moment that made me listen to him more.

He's been rejuvenated by the presence of his latest acquisition. Meridith finally does something positive for, someone!

He's employed many urchins. When one gets too old, he gets another one.

There are certain lines that sound definitely like it's Nick Boulton voicing him, I think it's just that he's altered the voice a little?

Kinda like how Corypheus was still voiced by David Sterne in both games, but was less decrepit sounding in DAI than he was in Legacy?

I assumed part of that was to try maintain the "mystery" of who the Elder One was. And having a deeper voice makes him sound more imposing. In this case, I'm not sure if there is any purpose to it.

Didn't David Gaider once say that Nicholas Boutlon just improvised a weird voice on the spot because he wanted to do something funny after recording so many serious lines? Maybe he didn't even remember exactly what he did.

I would presume that a professional like Nick Boulton would listen to his previous recordings of the character to get ready for a new session.  After all, it would have been a year-or-more since the last time he needed that voice.  Which leads me to assume that this is what he wanted the DAI Xenon to sound like!  Less "from the crypt", more "just ancient".

"From the crypt" is a good description, he spoke sooooo slowly in DA2.
