Didn't David Gaider once say that Nicholas Boutlon just improvised a weird voice on the spot because he wanted to do something funny after recording so many serious lines? Maybe he didn't even remember exactly what he did.
I would presume that a professional like Nick Boulton would listen to his previous recordings of the character to get ready for a new session. After all, it would have been a year-or-more since the last time he needed that voice. Which leads me to assume that this is what he wanted the DAI Xenon to sound like! Less "from the crypt", more "just ancient".
Probably something along these lines, I imagine that Nicholas Boulton probably forgot how he did that voice exactly and so decided to attempt to replicate it as best he could? It does happen, Greg Ellis often has said in the past that he often has to listen to old tracks to remember what voice he uses for Cullen because it's a slightly different accent from his natural voice?
On a similar note, while not a VA, I love to play around with accents, but I'll frequently forget how I do them from time to time? Australian's the worst, everytime I get close to nailing it, the next time I try, I've forgotten again and I end up slipping into a vaguely Irish brogue after the first couple syllables.
