I have played it all. Knights of the old Republic, Mass Effect, Jade Empire, and everything Dragon Age.

Great stories, hours and hours (and now DAYS) of fun, good graphics and nice controls ... but starting back in ME3 I began to get slightly annoyed.

Not a lot, not so much that I quit the game and didn't bring my Sheppard to the end of the trilogy, it was more a nagging sensation at the back of my mind. Where were all the cool male NPC's? Where was the guy-on-guy-action? Where was the dlc-story-character written to entertain ME - a female gamer?

Because honestly, Bioware. You overdid it in DA:Inquisition. Look, Thedas is populated by 75% women. My war-council had ONE man on it, thanks to you, Cullen. Yes, cool enough to let me meet up with Leliana and Morrigan from DA:O, but don't you think I'd rather have met up with Zevran again? :)

If anyone ever told you, dear Bioware people, that women are entertained by watching women, they've been pulling your leg. DA:I is storywise great! It's entertaining, good plot, and "I did NOT see that coming" ending, so thumbs up to you for that. But I ended up getting annoyed that every single character I met on my travels was female, with very, very few exceptions that were then either weak, bumbling fools, crazy villanous mages, or old and ugly. Almost every town had its' lesbians, so I was wondering were all the gay guys went (aside from Dorian.).

So this "letter to Bioware" is mostly to make you remember that we're a growing crowd - us female players. And we want to meet cool male characters, not fools like Alistar, we want dazzling emperors, swashbuckling pirates, courageous wizards and they should be young and good-looking thank you. I tried to remove Celene. No luck. I tried to find male NPC-mages to join my army - no luck.

I don't believe the modern gamer-guy has so low self-esteem, that you deliberately take out cool male NPC's.

Or do you?

Best wishes and keep up the good work (but with a few tweaks)

Etherlady

I think they're aware that they have female players.

Painfully aware, at times.

I'm not sticking my neck out here, but let me just say I'm grabbing a big bag of popcorn to watch the battle of all battles unfold between women that demand more powerful "cool guys" and women that demand more representation of women in charge.

Eh, I can't really get in my mind how one could interpret DAI this way especially considering how most of the companies are still guys, pretty good-looking one's too and there is even more romances to straight female character than other races. If female characters were to be reduced there would be quite big gender imbalance in the game too. I don't get where you pull out 75% female characters, I mean yes there is lot of women in leading positions in Orlais, but the game really has as much if not more male characters than female (it seems quite equal to me).

And as female player, I don't really want more of those things in my game, I don't need more male characters, more good-looking male characters or guy-on-guy action.. I'm fine with male characters, although there quite isn't my type of guy to romance I still think Bioware did quite well for straight female players.

Meh, devs are in a lose/lose situation in the modern gaming climate. They add a ton of male companions and npcs and people complain that there's a lack of female representation in the game. They add lots of female companions and people accuse them of "pandering" to the male gaze. Nobody can seem to come to an agreement on where the right balance between the two is.

Believe this though, Bioware are painfully aware that they have a large female audience. It's no coincidence that almost all characters in a position of power are female, or that the female companions and LIs are decidedly non sexualised.

the battle of all battles unfold between women that demand more male eyecandy and women that demand more representation of women in charge.

Pretty much.

Only thing I will say is that representation is the actual reason there's so many women. And you probably have "heard", but many of them are no longer interchangeable video game plastic barbies in their early twenties, so I hardly think they were added to cater to men in "that" way. So you can argue that it backfired and/or was poorly executed, but the intention -to me- was not a one-sided sexualization.

(e.g. one of the companions is a fourty-something black woman who dares not to sleep with you on command)

They're aware that they have female players, its why DA:I gave women two more romance options than men. You also have far more women in high profile positions appearing on screen than in previous titles, here's a short list of the ones I can recall off the top of my head:

Leliana - Possible Divine and Spymaster of the Inquisition

Morrigan - Enchanter aid to the Empress of Orlais

Celine - Empress of Orlais

Briala - Once consort and Spymaster to the Empress

Josephine - Ambassador of the Inquisition

Cassandra - Possible Divine and the re-founder of the Seeker Order

Vivienne - First Enchanter of Orlais, leader of the last 'loyal' mages and Possible Divine

Fiona - Previous First Enchanter, Ex-Warden, Mother of Alistair and Liaison of the Rebel Mages

Calpernia - Leader of the Venatori forces

The Inquisitor (if female)

Divine Justinia - Self Explanatory there

Krem (even though he identifies as a man) - Lieutenant of the Bull's Chargers

Flemeth - Witch of the Wilds and Vessel of the Goddess Mythal

Mother Giselle - Ear to the People, Healer of the refugees and the first 'ally' of the Inquisition

Belle - Merchant of Orlais and Provision Provider of the Inquisition

Anora (If alive and put on the throne) - Queen of Ferelden

Clarel - Warden-Commander of Orlais

I'm sorry you find the lack of likable men in DA:I to your ire, but we've been waiting for more strong female leads for quite some time and now we, as male gamers, have a large collection in the Dragon Age world to look up to that aren't just in fan fiction, or the comics or the books; they're actually in the game for us to meet and interact with.

They did have a lot of good characters in this version of the game and its finally getting to the point where we're getting a good mix of strong and those of the foolish disposition as well as the goofs, the romantics and the many other archetypal personalities available. I was quite pleased they went a different direction in this game, and I'm sorry that you're not pleased with the men in this installment.

I rather like that the game has so many awesome female characters that aren't there only to show boobies.

Game still has important male characters and most companions are males.

The only things that bother me from a female gamer perspective are female animations and awful clothes.  ;)

Second post since I'd like to point this out here as well. You say where's the 'guy on guy' action but we got both Dorian and Iron Bull in DA:I. Dorian who had a previous romantic/friendly entanglement that ends in tragedy. His friend isn't straight either so that's at least two men in Thedas you meet in your travels that are only into playing with bats and balls for the sake of innuendo. As for well written male characters, the writing behind Solas and Cullen both felt extremely strong; we also had a male secondary antagonist in Sampson that was extremely well written if you followed through on his story line.

You may have only had one man on the war council, but how many did you have in your corner through the game? Blackwall, who has a very good series of side story bits; Varric whom finally breaks a bit of the sarcastic writing to attain some seriousness; Solas, the enigmatic apostate elf with a twist; Iron Bull, the leader of his own company of mercenaries and a very nicely written Qunari; and Cole whom is just well written all around with his background. Again, I apologize that you didn't enjoy them in a way that you find them 'cool' but gaming will always be a mixed bag. I found Iron Bull extremely cool because he was an extreme departure from the last Qunari we had in our party.

The ladies didn't get a whole lot in the way of eye candy as it were, but the writing for both male and female characters was good. They've shifted far closer to the enjoyable on both sides from what I've been seeing, its far better balanced than before. Plus if you're complaining about attractiveness, Lace Harding and Dagna can't be romanced no matter which side of the fence you're on; that's a crime against all gamers not just one particular group.

...Gosh, it's been ages since I heard a clamour for more guy-on-guy hotness from a female fan.

It kind of brings me back to my Kingdom Hearts days as a kid in fandom...

Yeap, that's a pop-corn post alright, counting down to lock-down, but I was thinking something somewhat connected the other day, it seems to me that female protagonists who choose to romance a Mage are getting seriously stiffed.

SPOILER BELOW!!

I mean look at Anders (yes I know he's bi, stay with me): you romance him, and then he blows up the damn chantry and you eventually either have to kill him (I did, twice, cause I just couldn't believe he did this), or let him live and... not getting any like EVER AGAIN ANDERS!

And then we have Solas, aka Fen'harel the Dread Wolf, who is probably the next big baddie, I mean come-on, give us mage-loving lasses a break, all we want is a nice Circle boy... no we don't... lol, but seriously, I feel stiffed :P

As much as I'm 99% sure this is a troll post... I don't think the "put fewer women among my companions because I don't like hanging out with other women, and also make more m/m romances, not for gaymers to play but for me to leer at" demographic is high on BioWare's priority list. Thank God.

oh god hahahahhahaha, can't stop, I'm gonna choke hahahhahah

anyway, I find the males in DA:I very likeable. Really, you may not be able to romance them in-game but headcanons are your friend.

In fact, I would say that DA:I has the higher ratio of likeable men per game of all the Dragon Age UNIVERSE.

DA:O: Okay you had Anders, Bann Teagan, Loghain, Zev, DUNCAN, Alistair..

DAii: Anders. Fenris. Sebastian (if you liked him...)

DAI: COLE. COLE. COLE. COLE. COLE. Cullen. COLE. Gaspard (COME ON....) SAMSON. More Varric. Solas. Krem. The Ironbull. Blackwall, DORIANNNN And the list goes on and on....

You're using that 'we' very judiciously there, OP.

For starters, not every woman in the world is straight.
For seconds, I personally find it really refreshing to have a game filled with women who have a purpose other than being the main characters girlfriend, or dying within the first 5 minutes of gameplay to provide the male protagonist with a reason to go on a crusade with his bros.
For thirds, I'm really uncomfortable with the idea that LGBT content is there to amuse the straight fanbase. It isn't, or shouldn't be IMHO. I'm all for more s/s representation, but it should be created for the LGBT community primarily, surely?
There are 4 male LI's available for women in Inquisition, and I certainly can't complain, I enjoyed all their content- so adding on the 2 females available as well and women certainly got a huge slice of the pie in this game already.
And lastly, in order to remove Celene as empress all you had to do was let her die.
I shall now return to my regular scheduled snarkposting.

Well, really, you don't think so?

At the start of DA:O Alistair acted like a buffoon. ... a follower and apparently socially inexperienced.  I was not impressed. Zevran, I did not like. However, he was quite the ladies man, a casanova, good sense of humour too.... also a deadly assassin.

Cant tell if sarcastic or just goofy.

I was with Anders up until he lies to someone who's supposed to be his friend, and then blows up a Chantry full of possibly innocent people. He then wants to have his friend assist him in suicide and take the coward's way out instead of accepting the possibility of becoming Tranquil for his actions. That whole part of the game was only a forced lead-in for the breaking of the Circles and the dissolving of the Templar Order as it stood to have massive conflicts and antagonists for this game we've got now. They turned a very likable character into a narrative device and a prat in one fell swoop.
