It's more likely cause most male gamers have a very set and rigid set of beauty standards that starts with Lara and ends with, well, Lara. While we, on the other hand, can only vaguely hint at Solid Snake, and that's just about the extent of pickiness we have been allowed to have so far.

But but but you have Nathan Drake and Adam Jensen  to look at too!

I have played it all. Knights of the old Republic, Mass Effect, Jade Empire, and everything Dragon Age.

Great stories, hours and hours (and now DAYS) of fun, good graphics and nice controls ... but starting back in ME3 I began to get slightly annoyed.

Not a lot, not so much that I quit the game and didn't bring my Sheppard to the end of the trilogy, it was more a nagging sensation at the back of my mind. Where were all the cool male NPC's? Where was the guy-on-guy-action? Where was the dlc-story-character written to entertain ME - a female gamer?

Because honestly, Bioware. You overdid it in DA:Inquisition. Look, Thedas is populated by 75% women. My war-council had ONE man on it, thanks to you, Cullen. Yes, cool enough to let me meet up with Leliana and Morrigan from DA:O, but don't you think I'd rather have met up with Zevran again? :)

If anyone ever told you, dear Bioware people, that women are entertained by watching women, they've been pulling your leg. DA:I is storywise great! It's entertaining, good plot, and "I did NOT see that coming" ending, so thumbs up to you for that. But I ended up getting annoyed that every single character I met on my travels was female, with very, very few exceptions that were then either weak, bumbling fools, crazy villanous mages, or old and ugly. Almost every town had its' lesbians, so I was wondering were all the gay guys went (aside from Dorian.).

So this "letter to Bioware" is mostly to make you remember that we're a growing crowd - us female players. And we want to meet cool male characters, not fools like Alistar, we want dazzling emperors, swashbuckling pirates, courageous wizards and they should be young and good-looking thank you. I tried to remove Celene. No luck. I tried to find male NPC-mages to join my army - no luck.

I don't believe the modern gamer-guy has so low self-esteem, that you deliberately take out cool male NPC's.

Or do you?

Best wishes and keep up the good work (but with a few tweaks)

Etherlady

I'm...a little confused.

Yes another opinionated played telling them what to do and how they've got it all wrong. It would be funny if I was sure BioWare wouldn't take this sort of crap seriously. But they have shown a surprising lack of understanding of players and content they create. Take DAI:

For proper female romances you have

1) Red Bull

2) Solas

3) Blackwall

4) Cullen

I don't count Sera because it's that stupid convoluted out of place political crap that makes zero sense as far as her character goes and was slapped on there for political reasons, doing undoubtedly huge damage to her character, which i totally despise.

For proper male romances you have

1) Cassandra

1.5) Josephine??

2) Dorian

Josie is a nice character but her romance was really quite boring and doesn't explore the character at all. Like they could have introduced her family members, made some funny court intrigue... No instead it's [SPOILERS]blackboard duel-kiss-sit-on-sofa...[/SPOILERS]. And that's it. And I have feeling that Dorian being a good character was more of a lucky coincidence. I wouldn't be surprised if he started as one of those checkmarks "Ok we need a purely gay character, let's see..." and then by some miracle they actually made him into a good character (with a pretty hilarious romance).

And then this woman claims how they don't "remember the female audience". The ridiculousness of this statement is shadowed only by the fear that BioWare might actually take it seriously.

By which part? The whole 'we' and she's speaking for all of woman gamer kind, or the fact that she's saying there are no cool male characters? Or some other part that can be picked out?

I don't think that it's a coincidence that there are countless threads complaining about Cassandra's and Josephine's appearance and few (if any) threads complaining about Blackwall's, Cullen's, Iron Bull's, or Solas's. I don't know if it's because all the men are just that hot or because people who find men attractive have broader definitions of beauty. I hope it's the latter reason. Variety is good.

I think it's little bit both. Female players have more to chose from and Cullen seems to be popular look-wise. In other hand it seems like in general female players or those who play female characters care less about LI's looks and conventional attractiviness than male players.

I mostly dumbfounded by the part that Bioware doesn't remember or take accord their female players. I wonder who they do take accord then.

However there are more and more writers and artists who are creating more diverse characters and relationships and it's becoming a point where Yaoi  is one of the few media spaces where gay men aren't pushed to the sidelines as comedic relief or tossed into the role as the gay bff sidekick to the hetero female.  They're the cops, businessmen, teens,  prisoners, criminals, warriors, villains et al.

Good point. The only counterexamples I could think of immediately were Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and maybe GoT depending on how things play out with Loras.

I didn't even really notice this thread before. Which I have no good excuse for.

...Yes.

Lol. I mean, yeah, I'm all for the occasional male heartthrob. But I think...I think I've gotten that.

The sea turtles, of course. Since this thread is rather odd, I figured I'd finally give the true answer: Its always been about the sea-turtles. Also we haven't had an answer out of the OP after she was sort of throttled with all the answers.

I can't see hypocrisy in simple arithmetics.

In case you don't understand:

4 female romances > 3 male

Or purely by romance flags:

6 female romances > 4 male

I feel that Sera would hate everybody enough to not want to get that close to anyone. I went through her whole story line and listened to her quite well, it was a woman that wronged her all those years ago and made her hate being an elf as well as made her strongly dislike humans. How she could even be able to make any sort of proper connection with anyone is beyond me, she should have been in the 'no romance' category with Vivienne and Varric but then there would be no lesbian only option or they could have opened up Lace Harding ~winks~

Josephine is a bi-sexual option and Iron Bull is 'pansexual' so neither of them are proper male or female by any means. The talk between the female or male inquisitor and those two has very little difference, they would probably react the same way to a cardboard cut out that had friendly eyes.

Dorian was well written to be your buddy too, not just as a love interest. Its also funnier when you don't romance Dorian or Iron Bull and they end up together, the banter is awesome.

True. Albeit, tbh, none of the three examples are my cup of tea of games, so never gotten into the characters. (har, har, gotten into, har har, that'd be funny if, oh nevermind)

Did you get to her talk about cookies? That's where a lot of her stuff opens up and she talks about herself and why she has such aversions to people.

@the eternal question "but why do people have to be pretty"...

Which do you prefer having as the main plant in your garden? (SFW, just spoilered because of size)

Spoiler

Same with games. I mean obviously there are people who love the looks of the first plant, but at least as many people will prefer the second. A lot will want to mix it up a little, but still gravitate towards the second rather than the first.

In very simple words:

People (if I dare make that generalisation, I know it's tricky) like to look at things they perceive as pretty.

This does not mean that "everybody has to look like a supermodel" (the common strawman around here), but simply that some seriously beautiful/handsome characters would be appreciated. This includes both male and female sexes.

DA:I to me seems like

Spoiler

Sure, it's nice. Actually I personally like it quite a bit. But... it's a bit bland tbh. A bit boring, if that's all there is. I'd like a prettier flower in there somewhere.

Also @male standards: Actually I was surprised to find how specific the 'type' of some of you ladies is. Now speaking for myself again only, I don't have any rigid 'type' at all. Short hair, long hair, blonde, dark, red-haired, blue-eyed, dark-eyed, green-eyed, cute nose, classic nose... it's in the combination really, they can all do it for me (again, as long as the contents fits the box, so to speak, so character, (I agree!) voice, movement, etc). I wonder if the statements "... so I don't really care about looks as much as about character" and "... I don't really care as long as the whole is attractive" aren't more closely related than they might seem at first...
