Well, really, you don't think so?

At the start of DA:O Alistair acted like a buffoon. ... a follower and apparently socially inexperienced.  I was not impressed. Zevran, I did not like. However, he was quite the ladies man, a casanova, good sense of humour too.... also a deadly assassin.

Are you *trying* to turn me on, or what?

OP... please don't speak for me. I enjoyed Alistair. I like the fact there are strong women who aren't just there to be stage props or refrigeratored.

Male mage npc to join you? Uhm, Dorian? Solas? And with Dorian you have a guy on guy romance even if you don't romance him yourself (him and Bull).

Also, if I may point out for each of the classes there are two male companions and one female:

Warrior: Blackwall, Iron Bull, Cassandra
Rogue: Varric, Cole, Sera
Mage: Solas, Dorian, Vivienne

I'd hardly say men are under represented.

And I don't want dazzling emperors, swashbuckling pirates and courageous wizards. I want characters that aren't defined by one adjective. I want complexity not cardboard cut outs. So please don't presume to speak for all women as you certainly don't speak for me.

Second post since I'd like to point this out here as well. You say where's the 'guy on guy' action but we got both Dorian and Iron Bull in DA:I. Dorian who had a previous romantic/friendly entanglement that ends in tragedy. His friend isn't straight either so that's at least two men in Thedas you meet in your travels that are only into playing with bats and balls for the sake of innuendo. As for well written male characters, the writing behind Solas and Cullen both felt extremely strong; we also had a male secondary antagonist in Sampson that was extremely well written if you followed through on his story line.

You may have only had one man on the war council, but how many did you have in your corner through the game? Blackwall, who has a very good series of side story bits; Varric whom finally breaks a bit of the sarcastic writing to attain some seriousness; Solas, the enigmatic apostate elf with a twist; Iron Bull, the leader of his own company of mercenaries and a very nicely written Qunari; and Cole whom is just well written all around with his background. Again, I apologize that you didn't enjoy them in a way that you find them 'cool' but gaming will always be a mixed bag. I found Iron Bull extremely cool because he was an extreme departure from the last Qunari we had in our party.

The ladies didn't get a whole lot in the way of eye candy as it were, but the writing for both male and female characters was good. They've shifted far closer to the enjoyable on both sides from what I've been seeing, its far better balanced than before. Plus if you're complaining about attractiveness, Lace Harding and Dagna can't be romanced no matter which side of the fence you're on; that's a crime against all gamers not just one particular group.

I don't remember Meeting any of Dorians exes. If you mean Felix, Dorian specifically acts offended if you think they were a couple. We don't really know what Felix's sexuality is at all. He's really just in the story as a plot device.

I actually liked the female advisors and prominent NPCs. We actually needed more likable party members of both sexes. I had to force myself to like Sera just to have another likable female to travel around with. When I didn't need Cass to tank, my party was a sausage fest - which annoyed me as I typically want at least 2 women in my party when I have 4 spots. I found most of DAIs main cast to be underwhelming on all fronts.

I think DAI has a pretty good balance in gender distribution. It's refreshing to see female characters who have their own agenda.

And OP, may I suggest Jaws of Hakkon DLC? These Avvar men are quite eye candy.

You're using that 'we' very judiciously there, OP.

For starters, not every woman in the world is straight.
For seconds, I personally find it really refreshing to have a game filled with women who have a purpose other than being the main characters girlfriend, or dying within the first 5 minutes of gameplay to provide the male protagonist with a reason to go on a crusade with his bros.
For thirds, I'm really uncomfortable with the idea that LGBT content is there to amuse the straight fanbase. It isn't, or shouldn't be IMHO. I'm all for more s/s representation, but it should be created for the LGBT community primarily, surely?
There are 4 male LI's available for women in Inquisition, and I certainly can't complain, I enjoyed all their content- so adding on the 2 females available as well and women certainly got a huge slice of the pie in this game already.
And lastly, in order to remove Celene as empress all you had to do was let her die.
I shall now return to my regular scheduled snarkposting.

I really like this post--especially the bit about LGBT content being an amusing diversion for the straight crowd like we're some kind of novelty.

I'm not sticking my neck out here, but let me just say I'm grabbing a big bag of popcorn to watch the battle of all battles unfold between women that demand more powerful "cool guys" and women that demand more representation of women in charge.

*nom*

I think they are certainly capable of having a good balance. There should be a decent amount of well written, multi-faceted characters of each gender that don't descend into exaggerated stereotypes or are there for set dressing (this is a general statement, not a comment on DA games specifically).

That said... one of the things that sets BioWare and the Dragon Age series apart is their use and portrayal of women. They are an exception, not the rule. I like Dragon Age too and I also want to see good male characters in DA. BUT there are a ton of other series I can go to if I really need to see/play some, not so much for the female characters.

But... the last half of the OP's post just makes me think it's a troll. And honestly, that just hinders discussion.

If anyone ever told you, dear Bioware people, that women are entertained by watching women, they've been pulling your leg.
...
But I ended up getting annoyed that every single character I met on my travels was female, with very, very few exceptions that were then either weak, bumbling fools, crazy villanous mages, or old and ugly. Almost every town had its' lesbians, so I was wondering were all the gay guys went (aside from Dorian.).
...
And we want to meet cool male characters, not fools like Alistar, we want dazzling emperors, swashbuckling pirates, courageous wizards and they should be young and good-looking thank you. I tried to remove Celene. No luck. I tried to find male NPC-mages to join my army - no luck.

Part of this is personal preference only, part is hyperbolic 'observation,' and part is just not accurate at all.

Well, I personally think Dragon Age Inquisition did an awesome job of appealing to female players such as myself. The male romances are all pretty awesome, in my opinion. Cullen is stunning, Solas is dreamy (literally and figuratively), Blackwall is there for those girls who like older, more mature dudes, Iron Bull is there for people who like the fun guy, Dorian is extremely attractive and he's your male-on-male romance. I don't know dude, I'm just not seeing your point. :P Personally I think it's unbalanced for male players. While Cassandra is an amazing character, she is not the stereotypical male fantasy in the same way that Cullen is the stereotypical female fantasy.

Leliana - Possible Divine and Spymaster of the Inquisition

Morrigan - Enchanter aid to the Empress of Orlais

Josephine - Ambassador of the Inquisition

Cassandra - Possible Divine and the re-founder of the Seeker Order

Vivienne - First Enchanter of Orlais, leader of the last 'loyal' mages and Possible Divine

The Inquisitor (if female)

Mother Giselle - Ear to the People, Healer of the refugees and the first 'ally' of the Inquisition

Belle - Merchant of Orlais and Provision Provider of the Inquisition

I hope you do not mind if I use your list to explain somethings to the OP, here is the list of female characters in game that do not die ever, being in a position of power most of the time gets you killed. Just like with a lot of male NPCs in DA:O, the difference is that in DA:O you still have more male companions, if anything there is not enough female companions, the lowest in their games is DA:I, which it leads to have more heterosexual romances. So when it comes to the female inquisitor there is a lot more choices, if not even more though involved.

If anyone ever told you, dear Bioware people, that women are entertained by watching women, they've been pulling your leg. DA:I is storywise great! It's entertaining, good plot, and "I did NOT see that coming" ending, so thumbs up to you for that.

Not wanting to be rude, still I cannot avoid it but gay characters are not there to amuse you but to represent male players with that type of sexuality or on that spectrum. And you sure do not talk for me, please talk about only you personally. You do not represent me at all because many female players enjoy seeing other women in stories and want more companions.

As a gay guy, I was very pleased with Iron Bull and Dorian and all the sexiness that surrounds those two. That's enough for me, thank you Bioware. I have enough fandom material to run with as it is, I don't think I could handle anymore.

Not just sexy gay but kinky sexy gay with a dash of tsundere, size difference and romeo&juliet style culture clash? What more do you want, really?

I don't really think that OP could be happy with the game and direction BW is taking it even if there was more male characters and less female characters. What she seems to wish is tons of fanservice, but DAI already has some and if there were more the story-telling and other parts of game would suffer. I really think visual novels with their pretty boys and possible guy-on-guy action are better bet for OP than fantasy games especially if BW's take with DAI felt to her that it lacked content for female players.

Though I wonder who the OP thinks DAI has content for if it lacks it for straight female gamers? Cause it doesn't really seem have more content to gay/lesbian or straight male gamers either than it has content for female players (though this is rough division since everyone can enjoy content for everyone after all).

Pretty much this. You shouldn't really talk on behalf of the entire female fanbase :/. Sure, I would have loved to see certain male characters I love like Zevran, but I also really enjoy seeing women in places of power in Inquisition and not be oversexualized, like you know, pretty much 90% of the rest of the games that are out there and female gamers have no choice but to try and ignore these issues in order to enjoy games. So there's that.

Bleh. I will second Octarin and deplore the lack of humour and light-heartedness in this thread. Good grief people, you're acting as if anything less than a perfect 20-20-20-20-20 (sM/sF/gM/lF/aMF) representation with a perfect 50-50 split for each according to the good/evil scale is cause for major outrage. Oh wait, this is the BSN. Right.

I have absolutely no problem with the OP for wishing for more male attractive people. I also have no problem with other posters (even not-Brevnaus) wishing for more female attractive people. In fact, I personally am a bit tired of people demanding average to feel 'represented', we get kick-ass companions all around and attractiveness needs to be toned down for the sake of realism... For the next game I'm going to demand more representative fighters (= die every second fight, because in reality not every fighter is as kick-ass as the ones we get), and more representative mages (= spells fizzle randomly). And some intellectually challenged party members too, we haven't had those in a long time.

Also, please put back the lynching ropes. There's NOTHING reprehensible about usually straight people enjoying watching some gay/lesbian romances, if they're so inclined, or gay/lesbian people watching straight romances, if they want. The discussion here reminds me of that little kid watching a fun TV show s/he likes and shielding his/her brother's/sister's eyes so s/he can't...

Calm down yourself. I don't see anyone claming that straight people can't enjoy the queer romances, just that their purpose is not to be tawdry titillation for straight people.

I have no issue with people wanting characters they find attractive in the next game, and I don't think anyone else has said they have an issue with that either. The issue is with people deciding that because they like something that everyone of their gender must agree and want the same thing. I also don't see anyone calling for people to be average, and I'm not sure where that part of your argument has come from.

There's also nothing wrong with people enjoying romances outside of their orientation, but I do take issue with the suggestion that m/m romances should be included specifically for the enjoyment of female players. If you enjoy them, great, but turning the LGBT inclusion in DA games into something designed to amuse straight people is unfair, and frankly I don't agree with it all.

For me male and women characters in game are OK. What annoys me is having to wear a male uniform in an Orlesian ball ... and having to see Morrigan much better dressed than me  :( I want a nice dress for the ball!  :)

Ah, that's come from numerous previous discussions that I've had on this board. Not getting into this now, I'm tired. If you're so inclined, searching the board for "not every character has to be a supermodel" is bound to bring up results.

Where did that happen?

If I say "I like daffodils", that doesn't mean that I expect daffodils to grow just for my amusement. The next person coming along may enjoy the daffodils too. Hell, s/he may enjoy them even more, because s/he's a daffodil fetishist. Good for him/her!

This especially. I swear when I saw the comment about "hot male on male action" I did a double take. Including a gay romance just for women to ogle is just as bad as having a lesbian romance in order to pander to men. In fact the romances in general aren't there for titillation. They exist to give more depth to the story by fleshing out characters, both PC and NPC.

Hell, I wished we lived in a world where this wasn't even a discussion. Where sexuality isn't something viewed askance but just is, and as such people don't blink when it is included one way or the other. Same with gender.

If I didn't make it clear... Well said, Char :)
