I hesitate to write people off as trolls, these days it seems that most peoples definition of a troll is "Somebody on the Internet I disagree with." Even so, "trolls" generally seem to spark up some good debates, even if they don't stick around to contribute.

Agreed generally a "troll" is universally a person who presents ideas or criticisms that are too much for people to take, whether due to weakness or some other aspect.

Generally speaking whenever someone is deemed "trolling" it's also coincidentally the only time I'm interested in the subject or topic.

They do -- They make controversial posts that somehow draw multiple perspectives in where otherwise, nada. I called troll because it seemed like someone made an account moments before making the OP. It felt like a Not-Brevnau trying to bring in a new tactic to 'test the waters' so to speak.

Wouldn't have jumped to troll if they engaged the thread at all in a somewhat serious manner.

Honestly the reaction to 'trolling" is just human emotion, life, things, occurrences, there's something of value in every interaction IMO. Is human emotion inherently bad? No.

Sorry I'm off topic I just don't really perceive the OP to be a "troll," they were complaining about the lack of male eye candy, seems legitimate, whatever. It's hard to believe that would really enhance the game though to just have 2 hot guys making out randomly (or females for that matter), but I don't see any harm in the mere suggestion.

This is precisely why Bioware no longer communicates on these forums with any regularity. Ridiculous accusations like these must make them roll their eyes.

Oh, and people wanting a harem to fulfill their 3d relationship plots must make them roll their eyes too.

Like, if I was bioware, I would have posted a Cercei gif by now.

I almost never ever use the term troll.  Ever.  However, someone that comes in starting off brand new trying to speak for an entire gender is someone generally not interested in a productive conversation but rather just in stirring the pot.

Edit: Nevermind here.  Not worth debating about.

That's my two cents.  If there are folks that agree with the OP, more power to them.  I'm not knocking on that, since those that are responding to the OP are only speaking for themselves.

It doesn't strike you odd at all that someone would make a post, and then not post again on the account? The OP made a post the account right before posting the original thread. The topic may have been serious, and I agreed that males and females lack "eye candy".  I factored in that Not-Brevnau was banned four or so hours prior and the account being fresh. It seemed like a good way to pull a 180 and plot twist us all.

I have a good imagination.

I've seen your Bruce Dickenson remarks the other night.  Got room for a fellow metalhead or two?  I think my husband would love to collect money from such a disability.

Absolutely! The more the merrier  we could all form a support group :)

Meh, devs are in a lose/lose situation in the modern gaming climate. They add a ton of male companions and npcs and people complain that there's a lack of female representation in the game. They add lots of female companions and people accuse them of "pandering" to the male gaze. Nobody can seem to come to an agreement on where the right balance between the two is.

Believe this though, Bioware are painfully aware that they have a large female audience. It's no coincidence that almost all characters in a position of power are female, or that the female companions and LIs are decidedly non sexualised.

i think they should stick to creating games they want to create instead of trying to include representations of various groups or... 'pandering' to anyone/anything. they'll never win, there always is some group of people that feels left out and whines about it very loudly.

...said the disgruntled old-school RP/PC gamer

OP:

stop speaking for all female gamers, please

Badonkadonk is another metalhead head.  Seriously, we should form a group: "Metalheads of Thedas."  I swear, the entire Pride and Glory Album by Zakk Wylde became my dwarf Inquisitor's soundtrack.  Almost to a literal extent; it's so quiet while I'm running around in the field that I have music going.  That album and Down II got a lot of play with my dwarf rogue.  I couldn't stop playing Megadeth with my goodie-two-shoes human warrior.  Mainly Rust in Peace, but a lot of Countdown too.

Aaand we should take this to PM.   :P

I find most of the BSN trolling highly amusing, unlike on other boards where emotion run high. In here most of the time is more like 'devil's advocates' sparking debates and funny memes.

And no, sorry FFXV boy band is not to my taste, the one below is though...

That's irrelevant, I read the OP and I didn't go zomg this person is just trying to get a rise out of me. I thought, huh, ok guy-guy action in the middle of a video game.. um.. ok.. but is that really going to enhance the scenario? Is it a game design aspect? Is it a new form of questing? Is it a startling new form of characterization?

If the OP does happen to get rise out of you (or any other person here) that's your business and the person is not "trolling," because as far as I can tell decrying someone for that is speaking for everyone (like me) who feels nothing one way or another. I didn't think the Brevnau thread was trolling either. He thinks the DA:I characters are ugly, fine, whatever. I can either A) Know they're not basically and so don't care or B ) Agree. The only people who find him to be trolling are thus people that probably feel the same way.

For example I don't think I've ever ignored a person on a forum or in a video game ever, even that stream of "anal" chat you saw in WoW barrens or something... it's just people being whatever I don't care, I don't take it seriously. I've actually been posting in threads calm as a cucumber, but evidently were inflamed to the brim and as I'm about to post it says "this thread is locked," like really? Someone was offended by what we were talking about there?

The only reasons people seem to treat suggestions as trolling is frequently because they're on the same wavelength. Ergo, if someone says we need some guy-guy action and perceives that to be trolling it's because they probably had the same thought (perhaps on a deeper subconscious level) and are feeling squeamish about someone else exposing their inner-most thoughts.

That's exactly my viewpoint too. I find it a bit sad that people tend to dismiss posts simply on the basis of a formalistic mistake. Yes, of course the OP shouldn't have used 'we'. 'We' all make mistakes: only few of us actually speak English as their mother tongue, there are cultural differences to account for, or we may simply be tired and not choose the right words.

What I find far worse: The bile in this thread with everybody trying to get a hit in. It makes me nauseous. Group mentality not at its worst, but definitely not at its best either -- and all these people cannot claim 'honest mistake' in their defense. Of course I may be wrong, and the OP is indeed a troll. I'll refrain from judging though until proven guilty. You can disagree with somebody without hitting them with a piece of soap wrapped in a towel.

Me too, although I've never played any of the Deus Ex games (contrast that with all the mainline Final Fantasies and about 30 other Squaresoft/Square Enix titles). But it seems really up my alley. I'm gonna play Human Revolution in a couple of weeks. :)

TLDR: Accusations of trolling tend to reveal a lot more about the people making them the so-called "trolls" themselves.

In my opinion, it doesn't matter. The professed 'non-trolls' blowing the thread up to 10+ pages in the matter of minutes were worse offenders. (Yes, I ran a statistic once. Can't be bothered to dig it up, but around 50% of all posts in the Brevnau-threads were totally unproductive, 'put-down' style comments. That indeed says more about those posters than about Brevnau, imo.)

No no terodil whether it matters or not is not my point. I did not simply dismiss the OP's thread based on the potential motives. I just based my thoughts on the kind of person that person's post may be. I took the content serious despite not taking the PERSON seriously. I was called out or 'quoted' and told that shouldn't matter. I never disagreed with that. I simply stated why I liked Natashina's post. I thought the person was a troll.

Don't even know who that is, but I doubt it, never read a post anywhere on this entire forum anywhere that I thought was problematic beyond an objective concern. If someone says like an NPC merchant in Kirkwall was the greatest Bioware character ever I would just think well that's completely crazy and it wouldn't mean anything. If someone is complaining that there aren't enough cool male characters or strong female characters I can kind of nod and agree (or not, whatever).

I can take them quite seriously to be honest, why not? It doesn't sound so crazy to me. Heck, even if it were Brenau or whatever who cares, I don't dislike Brevnau, just some guy that didn't like the appearances of some characters. Lots of people dislike and like things all the time.. it's called humanity.

Yeah that sickening spew of "here we go again" and faceplam gifs that never fails to turn any potentially interesting conversation into a boring non-starter.

Bingo.  That's why I gave the response I did.  I was offering my honest thoughts about the subject.  I try to make it a point when I go into a thread that might be trolling to give forth an honest answer regardless of my personal feelings towards the OP.  I do goof off from time to time, but I try not to start trolling those that I think might be trolls.  This OP could be completely sincere and it could be my fault for reading things into it that weren't there.  As was pointed out, they might not speak English as their first language and didn't realize how the term "we" sounded.

Personally, I'm glad that there is as many prominent female characters as there has been.  I can kinda see where some folks might be coming from as seeing an imbalance, but I think that number listed by the OP is exaggerated.  It seems pretty balanced to me.  If anything, I would have been happy if they'd added another female companion next time.   :)

I agree 100%  It's just a bunch of nitpicking. I don't know if the OP is a troll or not but they still brought up a decent point.  Not all female gamers want to be surrounded by women and lebsians.  We like male eye candy too.  And yeah we  (SOME OF US) like some M/M action.    If you are a gay man and are offended, you shouldn't be.  It's not like anyone is tying to peek into your bedroom and watch you have sex.  You have no control over whether someone views a certain scene, characters, or relationship as titillation.    Chances are, if the character is a good looking, someone is thinking about them and sex.

And you just made me think of this.

(Very off topic bit) Jeff, how could you :o Deus Ex is one of the best games ever made: compelling story and characters plus an ibrid style of game (FPS/RPG/Stealth options all in one package). Today we take those as granted but DX was the one that did it first. I remeber when it came out I couldn't stop playing it and stil do a (nostalgia) run about once a year. DX:HR is an exceptionally good game, but get the director cut as bosses have been improved and you get the 2 DLC nicely slotted in the right points of the story.

Hazegurl, I wish they hadn't announced it so far from the release date as I can't really wait for it. After DAI I swore i wouldn't get hyped ever again for a game but I am so hyped for DX:MD that I nearly pre-ordered on the spot even though I even upgraded my console yet :D

On topic and in a very serious tone. If the OP is so serious about her opinion why hasn't she come back in to explain/defend her post? Why did she drop the 'bomb' and run? I have nothing against opinions that differ from mine, but I resent when people try to use the 'We' in their posts claiming that I want the same things as them. To use a famous A.J. phrase 'OP, I never asked for this'!
