In all my my playthroughs thus far I've always done Here Lies The Abyss first. Does Skyhold still get the extra repairs if I do Wicked Hearts first?
yes.

I always do WEWH first. Mostly because of hate. But when you come back Skyhold is always fixed up.

I think doing Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts first also benefits from a pacing point of view, as WEWH is less action-packed.

I always postpone main quests. I generally do HLtA @ level 18 and WEaWH @ level 23.

WEWH is pretty intense, and I don't handle it well at all. It might be a good idea to get it out of the way as quickly as possible, but I tend to procrastinate. It sure doesn't hurt to have a Tier 3 armor schematic, even if it is limited, early in the game.

I've always done Adamant Fortress before the Winter Palace in my previous PTs but for my current run I'm going to go to Halamshiral first for a change. Can't say I've ever understood the hate for WE&WH. ![]()

There's an element of WEWH that's completely outside player control, and that causes some players to experience stress. Combat - no matter how intense - is within player control. The player can use character skills and equipment to win, and victory is clear and easily defined. Most of the puzzles in the game are fairly straightforward, and there are videos or posted hints to get through them if the player gets stuck. Again, success is easily measurable and easily quantified. The player can't control court approval. Not completely. Yes, certain actions and dialogue choices influence court approval, but the timer will tick down on its own and there's no way for the player to do anything about it, nor is it possible to recover 100% approval if the timer goes down too far. To make matters worse, success is not easily quantifiable. Some players define success as "Reach 100% approval ASAP and never drop below 85% thereafter," while others consider it a win if the can make it through to the end without getting escorted out of the palace. The latter group will enjoy the quest more than the former.
I personally love WEWH. It's my favorite of the main quests because I enjoy the ambiance and the verbal repartee. But I fully understand why some players dislike it so intensely. Their dislike doesn't spring from a character flaw or anything, it's just different preferences and/or a different playing style. Love WEWH or hate it, the quest is one of the reasons DAI is such a great game. There's something for everyone. Characters like Sera, Blackwall, and Vivienne are divisive, but they contribute to the experience in part because of the reactions they evoke, and the same goes for quests. Not everybody is going to like WEWH, but that's why the game has more than one kind of quest.

This can be true the first or second time you're doing it, but then you know what to say, you know how many hallas you need, you know where are the doors you have to open... I never fall under 90 approval anymore, unless I decide to do so.
The quest should have been done better, mostly cause the first time you play you know nothing about the statuettes and the doors, so the final decision is dependant on your luck and not role playing.

Maybe I lucked out on my first playthrough... but it's more likely that it's just really, really hard to get kicked out.
Maker knows, I made a lot of mistakes on my first trip to Halamshiral. My poor Cadash didn't make a good entrance (I think she told the noblewoman who lost her ring to get stuffed, and she definitely told the Council of Heralds Emissary to cut Phillipe some slack), but she still squeaked by with enough court approval to avoid bloodshed at the end. But only just. And forget the halla statues. She only found three of them to begin with, and she wasted one on the storage room and had to use the second as part of the plot. The third was pretty useless by itself, so it wound up on Cullen's bookshelf or something. About the only thing she did right was dancing with the duchess. She entered the ballroom after the third bell both times because I didn't realize that was important, so she went off and had a chat with Dorian after the first bell went off and was busy annoying the guards by the construction zone after the second. I was sure that I was supposed to go in there, for some reason. Oops.
