I've always argued that Corypheus' confused dialogue about the Black City in Legacy was unclear. Now that he's more lucid when he talks about it, I figured he settled the issue by saying it was black when he arrived. He also says that he and his fellows didn't create the darkness, they discovered it. But this still raises the question of why he thought it was gold because clearly he must have had a reason to expect it. But then in the end he says that he "walked the Golden City" as do the Venatori in the dark future. There's also a codex entry in Valammar, I think, about a dwarf relates a story he heard about a friend encountering intelligent darkspawn where he talks about a what appear to be the other Darkspawn Magisters arguing about their failure. And it clearly mentions "a city turned black."

The Codex entry for "Doom on All the World" finally gives us some more historical details. There are records of Tevinter Magisters opening a portal to the Golden City purportedly at the behest of the Old Gods. And there are also records that the city in the center of the fade, which did look gold, immediately turned black as soon as they did so.

So even when I thought the characters were being clear, it also ends up being unclear.

The the closest theory this seems to hint at, in my opinion, was that The Golden City was a "gold on the outside, black on the inside" sort of thing.

I think they're trying to keep it unclear on purpose. I always felt like it turned black around them, but that's just me.

The only alleged eyewitness says it was black, not golden, yet he could be insane.

It's all in how we perceive it I think, like the Fade. Maybe those who wanted to see Gold saw it, and others saw Black after they heard of the Magisters. Another way to see it is, pure-hearted people saw Gold and dark-hearted people saw Black. I feel like this is a parody of the Triforce in Zelda sometimes. Lol the golden land turned to the dark world when Ganon touched the Triforce with a dark heart.

He also says that he has "walked the halls of the Golden City".

You could also interpret his statement in Legacy about black and corrupt to be referring to the power of the gods, and not the city.

Chances are the city looked golden.

Possible it was all an illusion though .

We don't know what exactly happened with the magisters , Coryphifish is confused at best.

They went there , he says there were only "chaos , corruption , dead whispers."

And bam somehow they got turned into darkspawn and back on Thedas.

There's a number of fishy things going on in the lore , to be honest.

I think so far I've read that the Maker was in the city , the Creators were in the city (elven gods in the Eternal city in the Beyond ) and sometimes we're told even Tevinter thought it was the city of their old gods.

So everyone thinks their gods was in there somehow.

It's baffling the elves don't react to the fact, humans went there and corrupted the city.

Also well the Blight.

We've been told by Bianca , only the living , or living organism can carry the Blight.Cory didn't see anything living in the City ...

He still got tainted.

But it's not what would happen on Thedas , if a human get the Blight , he'll turn into a ghoul and will die after a while ( it's also what happens to wardens after a few decades).

Corypheus and the Architect were immortal , the Blight isn't slowly killing them , Corynoob can also use the Blight just like an Archdemon , mindcontrol , body jump .It seems thought Cory is more effective at controlling wardens  and he can use them as meatsuit somehow.

Technically , Corypheus did manage to get the powers of his gods.

Still doesn't explain what the hell is going on in that city though.

Corypheus also said "we sought the Golden light". If the idea that the Black City was a prison holds up, then whatever was imprisoned was let out the moment they opened the door.

The seat was empty, I guess. Probably had to go take a dump...

I'm guessing it was actually green. Because, you know, elves.

Perhaps it was always Black?

Maybe it appeared Gold on the outside, but was black on the inside and the magister intrusion turned it completely Black.

Is the Blackness the very essence of the Blight itself?

If so, then the bigger question is who put that essence in the city and why.

It's supposed to be unclear. They don't want to confirm the truth of the Golden city any more than they want to confirm the truth about the Maker.
