So Elinor Cousland was a pirate queen? (http://forum.bioware...d-was-a-pirate/) Very nice. That would make the Cousland mom the most baddass mom of all Origins, right? Except she gave it all up to suck a guy's **** the second he said he liked her better when she was soft and gentle, and tries to tell her daughter to do the same.

Don't believe me? Watch this

Elven servant: You're as pretty as your mother describes.

Mommy Cousland: And she says that after seeing you whacking stuffed men in the courtyard, sweating like a mule.

What's-His-Nuts: Your daughter's prowess with the blade is most impressive.

Mommy Cousland: I was quite the battle maiden myself in my day, but I think it was the softer arts that helped land me a husband.

Yeah, because landing a husband is the most important thing you can ever do in life, ladies. And no man wants a woman too bulky, sweaty, or sticky like a mule. Remember, pretend to be weaker and stupider than you really are because no man wants a woman stronger than he is.

Priorities, ladies.

Meanwhile, Adaia was also a badass fighter who could kick ass and take names (enough that she got considered to be a Grey Freaking Warden!), but she didn't stop fighting just because she got married. Plus her new husband liked her for being a badass just fine, plus she taught her daughter (or son!) how to be a badass like her.

Don't believe me? Watch this

Daddy Tabris: One last thing, my dear. Your martial training... the swordplay, knives, and whatever else your mother trained you in. Best not to mention it to your betrothed.

Unamused City Elf: He'll find out sooner or later.

Daddy Tabris: Later, definitely later. We don't want to seem like trouble-makers, after all. Adaia made that mistake.

Mourning City Elf: Mother was a good warrior/rogue.

Daddy Tabris (fondly): Yes, that she was.

There. Right there. Not only did Mommy Tabris not stop fighting just because she landed a husband (in fact, she didn't need to pretend to be weak to get a husband--Duncan and Valendrian say she was a fighter before she even got married), but her new husband loved her for being a badass fighter just fine. Not only that, but he was okay with her teaching their baby how to be a fighter like her. That is, until she got killed. Bummer, that. (Then again, Couslands got killed too.)

Even then, he only encourages his daughter to hide her fighting prowess not to look soft and submissive to attract a husband (because men only like women weak and dependent on them), but just not to get into trouble or get killed by the law like her mother was. In fact, he encourages a male city elf to hide his prowess with a blade for his betrothed too (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Flw9-RXKR-c)

So, let's compare who's the most badass mom, shall we?

Elinor Cousland: was a raider bann's daughter who got the best martial training daddy's money could buy, became a "badass pirate" with daddy's ship and crew, then gave up being a badass pirate queen just because her new dandy didn't like her being too muscly or sweaty.

Bryce Cousland: was apparently attracted to a "battle maiden" for casting aside her own blades so she could polish his blade (if you know what I mean  ;) ) for the rest of her life.

Adaia Tabris: was a city elf who became a badass warrior or thief despite being dirt poor in an alienage where having weapons is dangerous, didn't stop being a badass warrior or thief just because she got married, and taught her daughter (or son) how to be a badass fighter and stand up to injustice just like her.

Cyrion Tabris: Loved his wife for being a badass, didn't expect her to stop being a badass just because they got married, and was okay with her teaching their daughter how to be a badass as long as it didn't get either of them killed.

I think it's clear who the real most badass mom (and/or family) in Dragon Age Origins is.  ;)

The badassery thing is partly what draws my city elf to Zevran every time. She likes a husband who is actually a really competent fighter like herself, and one who somewhat shared her fighting style. She doesn't have to worry about his throat getting easily slit if she ends up in a situation where she needs rescued (like Fort Drakon if you're captured at Howe's home). Best part of all is that he's the same way, his favorite kind of lover is the kind that has impressive fighting ability. And him being an elf means having an elven child is actually possible. With parents like that, I pity any poor bastard who tries starting a fight with any kid they make.

You are clearly applying a double standard that is coloured by your bised view.

Eleanor never tells her daugther to not be a warrior but simply that she is not at her prettiest when she just finished a melee (which is probably true and applies equally to a man) and that it wasn't her battle prowess that enamored Bryce and you claim that she has stopped fighting alltogether, that she pretended to be weak (which has no basis whatsoever, especially considering WoT 2 claims she and Bryce destroyed over a dozen of Orlesian warships together) to win Bryce and wants her daughter to be weak despite the fact she never even suggests such,

On the other hand, we have no idea what Adaia did to make Cyrion fall in love with her (as far as we know, it was the softer arts as well) but you automatically assume it was because she was a fighter. And worse, we actually have Cyrion asking the City Elf to not reveal their training; which is more than Eleanor did; but you apply a completely different reasoning than you did to the Couslands.

I haven't read WoT2 yet (don't even have the first volume TBH) but I have to agree with MisterJB here.  I also have no information on how Adaia won Cyrion's heart beyond what happens in the City Elf Origin.

However, I definitely agree that Adaia was badass.  Human nobles are allowed to wield swords, bows, and daggers.  City elves?  Not so much.  Teaching your son/daughter how to fight with weapons your race isn't even supposed to have... now THAT'S badass.

It would have made for perfect sense for Adaia to be a companion in "Leliana's Song". She is already there and she has the skills. It would have been more memorable than that warrior whose name I can't recall.

The only problem would have been her class.

I made a city elf that actually was supposed to look like her Leliana's Song look. I personally think they made her look really bad with the makeup choice, but I still made her look good. It was also the first time I ever made a dark skinned elf. All in all, I really liked how my attempt make a family resemblance turned out. I probably should have tried to make her look a little more like her father too, but I guess it is constantly stated how you take more after your mother than your father.

It seems that Elinor Cousland was still pretty badass, even if she did give some of it up temporarily on behalf of her husband.  When it came push cames to shove down at the end she was right there sword in hand, and gave it everything she had.  I admired her tremendously.  However, I agree with the OP hands down that Adaia Tabris must have been the most badass mom simply based on the lack of available weaponry and supplies.  She still managed to battle and teach her daughter some major skills and abilities.  Sounds like she had a whole lot of heart.  We have to assume that both of these women were creatures of their environment and times.  I am able to forgive Ms. Cousland for her remarks as a sign of the times and society in which she lived.  Ms Tabris lived in a completely different society and life style,  In my opinion hers was considerably more realistic.

Welcome to DA politics. Eleanor was the daughter of a bann. She was expected to hold up her responsibility as nobility, and that's exactly what she did. Warden Cousland was also expected to do the same, hence the constant suggestions towards Howe's children. They're both strong, just in different ways.

This is ridiculous. Why does there have to be such competition? They can be both badass. Or do you hate everything human you can't deal with that?

Let's bear in mind that Elinor and Adaia were both doing their jobs.  Elinor wasn't retiring to do embroidery when she put down her blade. She was becoming the second in command of the largest fiefdom in Ferelden, and played an important enough role there that she was going on vacation when her second child was placed in charge just to avoid undermining the kids authority just by being there.  Adaia was continuing her life of crime because she was married to a somewhat elderly city elf who nobody was going to hire to unload cargo on the docks.  They were both doing what they needed to do to support their families.  Their families just had rather different needs.
