so... I find myself in the uncomfortable position of having to consider brown nosing as a real strategy at work. (Culinary)I consider myself a brutally honest person so this will be a difficult transition to say the least ... thoughts?

 

Honestly, it depends on the kind of person you're dealing with. As a Chemist, I kinda deal with the same thing: I love the lab and the actual work, and hate all the politics that often goes on, especially at the larger companies. 

 

You might have a boss that hates that kind of thing who's blunt, honest, and wants to hire the single best person for the job. I much prefer these types. On the other hand, there actually are people out there who really enjoy brown-nosers. In that case, you either play ball or watch your career stall (depending on the situation).

Politics are a necessary evil in the game of life my friend. Think of being nice as a requirement for success. Also keep personal life and work life seperate if you think it will be a challenge.

Me? If I noticed right away, I'd just give it back to the cashier.

If it's a machine? Well then, that's too bad, since I can't really stuff the money back.

Stand by your principles.

Be polite, be effective, but remain stalwart in what you believe. Be a good person, but do not brown-nose. All you will get is a sinking pit of self-loathing within your gut. . .and maybe a larger pile of money, but still!
