Like,  do I get points for casting barrier on teammates?  Things like that and what not.

I would also like to know the answer to this. ME3MP let you know the breakdown for XP values, this doesn't do it so clearly.

Dealing damage, killing stuff, reviving and supportive play. You get xp for damage done to barriers you cast, you get xp for damage delt thanks to your buffs. I also see "supportive XP" pop up when i play as a Legionnaire and i taunt a mob with war cry. I'm fairly sure you also get XP for weaking enemies, getting them stuck in a vortex and so on.

I find that it's easiest to get the most XP with supportive characters like the keeper and now ZITHER!.

I noticed this morning on my necro that fearing someone unreliable gave me support xp. It seems like using horror on a mob about to hit another party member gives support xp but fearing a mob already hitting another player did not. I'll have to pay more attention next time to see if that holds true.

You also get support xp for blocking. For all you Templars out there.

I think support xp is granted when someone kills the enemy you placed an effect on while the effect is active. For example I'm playing as lego, taunt a bunch of mobs, someone kills one and I see a little purple text above it because it was killed during the taunt.
