I have wondered about this -- he is holding the Disciple shotgun in the squad selection screen. It seems as though that if one was going to represent a weapon, they would at least be able to hold it. Is there something I need to unlock or is the Vengeful Ancient just trolling people again?
I have completed many play-through's, but there are still one or two DLC's that I have not downloaded, yet. Does one of those DLC's include usable weapons for squadmates or something?
So how do I get Javik to use the Disciple?

He can't use it, no. Kinda sucks, I once tried to give everyone the weapons they hold in the squad selection screen and he ended up not using his.
Acolyte looks close enough though.
