Wanted to ask how you folks prefer to operate your Paladin's ED, especially in terms of sequence.

Earlier today I got into a temporary muscle memory bad habit of going to town with ED vs Geth...finding myself overusing it vs Collectors.  More to the point: I was fruitlessly attempting to detonate CE/FE on unprotected foes more often than I care to admit.  Once I overcame that and utilized it with more thought, I couldn't make up my mind how I wanted to sequence my attacks.

Versus protected organics, do you:

a - Make priming a priority to allow ED to consistently detonate the protected foe?

or

b - Lead with ED to maximize shield/armor boost for self and drain said foe protection ASAP?

or is it

c - Shut yr word hole, L2P, and maximize yr URs already, scrub

edit:  This would clearly apply for the SE just as well

step 2:

a) if shielded - ED

b ) if unshielded/armoured - Incinerate

For the Paladin, the most effective strategy for killing shielded enemies is to prime with Snap Freeze and detonate with Energy Drain.  That combo is un-dodgeable (and won't be blocked by Phantom bubble!!!!) and will kill pretty much anything dead.  Honestly, there are few anti-Phantom strategies that are easier than the SF-ED combo.

There is no Energy Drain.

There is only Snap Freeze and pimp shield slap.

Although I usually do open with the shield, then combo chain with the rest of my abilities.

Thanks for the replies.

My main scenario would be possessed scions at a considerable range...if that helps.  Kept second guessing myself whether I'd be better off leading with ED or applying Incinerate followed by ED --> FE.  Gunfire in between, of course.

Reading replies and after more thought...seems option A is a better route.

Unless of course I want to suck up some protection to replenish my own...

Against organics, I try to see Energy Drain as a tool to set them up for headshots with my weapon, if the situation warrants. If I can grab some shields and DR when I first encounter enemies, I will, but I tend to have shorter-than-average cooldowns, making it easier to play with powers. Otherwise I tend to go Shield-Incinerate or Snap Freeze-Incinerate, depending. If Cryo 'splosions that restore my shields present themselves as an option, I've managed to train myself to take advantage of it, but for a long time I under-used Energy Drain against organics.

For Possessed Scions out of Snap Freeze range, I'd lead with ED if they still have their barrier, then just shoot and spam Incinerate.  Once its barrier is down, ED isn't going to do anything for you.

sorry that is too complicated.  re-explain it in a way that I can understand.  I didn't ask for C++ coding!

Skip everything and spam snap cheese to kill steal. You get more pointz to make your e-peen bigger, and then on wave 11, you shoot.

If I get a Paladin on the team, I go GE and detonate everything all the time for them and stunlock phantoms, pyros and other annoyances.

They get to feel good because they get the most points. I feel good because their steamroll depended upon teamwork (a detonator and cover fire). I like when MP involves teamwork.

My TSent typically specs Overload with Chain/Neural Shock/Shield Damage.  I spec GE for Triple Chain/Healing Turret precisely for Snap Freeze/Flamer support, and bring that kit when appropriate.

Particularly with Phantoms, you actually want the b!tch to have a barrier on. I just tap my trigger on her once or not at all, SF, ED and she's or they're dead. Just repeat once if there's like 8 phantoms :D

I had an amusing outing vs Geth on Rio with my Paladin one time in particular.  Me & a fellow wall-haxing BatSent were going ape-crap with an endless barrage of SF + SWave ==> CE city.  If you're facing the EZ side, we were on the left of the central LZ...just positioning ourselves between those walls...completely stun-lock free.  Vindication.

Funniest thing I've read all day.  It's only 9am here, but still \\props//.

---------

Like Cyonan said.  Shield smack all day will cure you of your premature ED.  Do it with the fire shield to prime 6x6 fire explosions.  Do it with the bat gauntlet equipped and your shield smack will decapitate on kill.  Do it to a Prime all day* with ED to detonate your fire explosions and re-up your shields.  Recommend only planting your fire shield as a prelude to a smack.**

*Not responsible for incidents associated with wave 3 including but not limited to Condor, praymaxians, typhoon boss killers, Malaysian autobahns or geth in general.

** An erect fire shield presented to the enemy is not considered a cure for premature ED.  Do not leave your fire shield erect for more than 5 seconds.  If this situation occurs, please consult an asari.

If you shield smack fifty butts in one match I hear you get a special medal.
