Maybe I should have said a Geeky Fortress! lol

IMO, everyone should have a decent HTPC in the entertainment room that's hooked up to a giant TV and powerful surround sound speakers via a receiver.

Not only you can use it to watch all types of videos, if you have enough HDDs in it, you can even use it as your main media server/torrent box for the house. Add a small video card like a 750 Ti, connect a few Dualshock 4 controllers to it with Bluetooth, and now you have a perfect home theater gaming system for you and your friends.

Surely it costs a lot more than a PS4 or an Xbox One, but for an anime fan like me, it's worth every penny.

First off, steam sucks. Must be said. Also, I game at 1080p on a Benq 140hz, but I value tons of frames because I'm a comp FPS guy on PC. So I prefer my steady 140-120 frames. I think 1080p is fine too be honest. I mean, I cranked up Crysis 3 on max settings at 1080p and it was absolutely stunning and still played well above 60 frames even with lots of enemy AI and particle effects.

Resolution does not always mean a better looking image quality.

I really like my Benq 1080p monitor and performance at 1080p.

I much prefer a lower resolution with maxed out graphics and crazy high FPS over a higher resolution, but it's a YMMV.

All but one of the cards I've ever bought have been ATI/AMD, yet the current heat issues and their driver update schedule are making me seriously consider giving NVIDIA one more go. Still, I've never had any serious problem with Catalyst drivers, whereas I had multiple problems with NVIDIA drivers during my time with my 8800 GT, forcing several rollbacks. Even my notebook's GT 520M managed to give me a headache when I foolishly gave too much trust to their auto-update, forcing a clean reinstall, and let me tell you; NVIDIA drivers are a PITA to uninstall. Hence, I'll probably end up sticking with AMD.

The new 300 cards look very interesting, especially with the new HBM RAMs. However, I would be surprised if they can deliver everything they promise, considering the heavy restructuring they're currently going through.

I guess time will tell.

Pretty tough prognosis you're stating without having much confirmed informations on how GCN 1.3 actually performs that isn't handpicked by AMD and may or may not actually reflect gaming performance.

I'm very interested in how HBM is going to stack up to the challenge (pun intended) and most certainly following the R9 390/X development as far as I can, but until I see various independent hardware blogs/websites review the GPUs, I'm not going to jump on a hype train. Though I really do hope that AMD can deliver competitive raw performance in the ultra high-end/enthusiast market, we all know how bad that's needed to break down the ridiculous pricing trends, a neat price war between equally performant products.

Such a shame though that AMD will not deliver any GCN 1.3 GPUs for the entry-, mid- and just below high-end markets as far as things stand. Current understanding still say it's going to be largely recycled for everything that isn't R9 390/X. Which is kind of impressive in its own right, I mean, the HD 7XXX series is what, four years old by now?

Figured I'd rather wake up this thread than make a new one just for this:

AMD Fiji series rumoured to be AMD's equaivalent to Nvidia's Titan series.

vader.jpg

And here I was hoping that AMD was going to deliver a powerhouse GPU that would bring out Fiji to target Nvidia's GTX 980 and 980Ti line-up, initiating a neat pricing war, but it appears that the entire R series is just going to be rebrands and the only new technology hiding behind a Titanesque enthusiast market paywall.

I hope to the Tech-Pantheon that this rumour turns out incorrect, or that AMD at least tries to lower the pricing range for their products to put Nvidia under enough pressure to deflate those GPU prices.

they cant charge Titan X-money for a card with "only" 4GB. (if this rumor is true)

Don't worry, it won't cost Titan X money.

AMD's aggressive pricing is pretty much the only thing that's keeping them competitive and they know it.

If the latest informations are correct, the big Fiji GPU will actually come with HMB2, meaning it can manage up to 8GB HBM. With that it can easily compete with the Titan X, plus use the HBM technology as additional price leverage over the old GDDR5.

The smaller Fiji GPU is likely using 4GB HBM1, but that's still entirely sufficient when they match it up with the GTX 980Ti which will come with 6GB GDDR5 frame buffer.

I had actually hoped that the big Fiji would target the pricing range of around 800 bucks (competing at GTX 980Ti pricing range) and the small Fiji going for around 600 bucks competing with the GTX 980 and subsequently causing the usual pricing/placement ruckus to help deflate the market prices, but if AMD is going the same route as Nvidia, then that's really screwing over us as customers. A couple years back, the top-end GPUs were 500 bucks, now they are double the price, screw that!

More like a disgruntled ex-AMD/ATi owner.

Owned a 9700 Pro, a 9800 Pro, two 4870s, a 5870, and a 5970. Switched to nVidia and I haven't had any driver problems since.

one day the rumors say x, the next day they say y. AMD needs to deliver.
my guess would be ~500$ for the R9 390 and ~700$ for the R9 390X. we will see.

started with nvidias GTX6XX, right? when they decided to charge high-end prices for the mid-range chip. if i remember right the GTX560ti (GF114) was about 240€ when released, and the GTX680 (GK104) was about 500€ when released... and the GTX780 had the same price as the double-GPU-card GTX590...

Yup, pretty much started with the GTX Titan. From then on Nvidia had progressively increased the pricing bar for its top end products. Around 650'ish for the GTX 780, then the Titan Black again for 1000 bucks, then the GTX 780Ti for around 750-800 bucks, then the hilariously failed Titan Z for 3000 bucks (which performed worse than the 1500 bucks R9 295X2), now the GTX 980 for 650-700 bucks, the Titan X for 1250 bucks ...

All the while AMD seemed to have tried beating Nvidia in value if they couldn't beat them in raw performance, but if AMD got the idea to hop onto the prestige GPU train and only sell rebrands at prices your average gamer can afford (and that's really pushing it, the average gamer isn't running around with a R9 290 or GTX 780 either!), then good night.

I've had ATI cards on my last three systems. With all the problems that I experienced with ATI/AMD drivers and the issues I had with multiple games flaking out when I used Crossfire mode, I was never happier than the day I got my new gaming laptop with my two Maxwell GTX 970m cards in SLI. They run DA:I with everything on ultra, and I am pretty happy with the cards' performance to date.

so, we have about the same performance as the 980ti, but with a little higher energy consumption, 4GB of HBM memory and a similar price. not a bad product, but far away from "b!tch slap[ping] nvidiaderp"...

Yup. Been eagerly awaited the reviews too.

Though by now I don't really care for the Fury XT or Pro chips, I want to see how that Nano ((in-)officially dubbed Fury LE chip) performs. That's the one I'd buy if anything and it might just be that it could place itself between the GTX 970 and GTX 980 in gaming performance, which is a very attractive niche if the pricing reflects that performance positioning.

Though really, by now I pretty much think that I'll have to hold my system upgrade back another year (good old GTX 660Ti, hold on buddy!) and wait to see how Nvidia Pascal (then also with HBM (the second generation afaik, meaning no more 4GB density limit and faster) and the new AMD GPUs look like when they finally make the 14nm transition. 28nm has been around for way too long ... four years already.

AMD should have gone to 5GB memory limit. 4GB is too Nvidian!

Was never going to be. Experimenting with new and significant technologies is fraught with danger while you're also trying to claim the performance crown.

The Nano is where AMD should make a killing this GPU generation if it is a noticeable bump up on the GTX 970. Fury X is a disappointment, but if they are priced correctly, then AMD can still try to position itself as price/performance king like usual.

Still happy with my R9 290 though. I unseated the heatsink, cleaned out the thermal paste and applied some leftover Gelid paste then put everything back. I can now overclock to 1100/1500 (from 947/1250) without going over 80c after an hour of Valley with the fan at 60%. It would previously throttle at 94c when I tried to apply anything higher than 1080/1500 with the fans at 100%. Brilliant stuff from a Hawaii chip. I may have voided my warranty, but it made an amazing difference and I don't regret it in the slightest.

I do love PC component smack talk. Especially when it is based upon rumour and conjecture.

Y'all are ever so butch and manly when you engage in such.

Carry on. :D

You may have only read the first page, so you're excused, but just today we got the reviews for the Fiji XT GPU, so it's not as much rumour/conjecture anymore. And people smacktalking components are their own breed really, as anyone who limits himself on the hardware based on pure subjective brand preferences is quite literally going to pay for it ...

you know that the R9 Fury X has "only" 4GB due to a technical limitation of first-gen HBM...?
