So yay another Collector crash. Nothing new. Good thing someone here told me how to avoid system restore that could sometimes take upwards of 2 hours. So heck to any more system restores. Just have to remember to enter BlueTooth management for my Turtle Beach headset, and even if I forget that, no biggie. I can deal with that. No more PS3 surprises.

I decided to host this match and go Turian Saboteur passives for Lancer 1 stability. Toss on my best consumables because I feel special this moment. Go have a cig while I wait for lobby to fill up. As I finish my cig I see it already full and ready to go to my surprise. Game starts, and Sony once again mocks my aiming skills by un-inverting my aim this time around. Touche, Sony. Touche.

EDIT - oh yeah. "Dear diary."

I'm so used to it by now it doesn't even register.  Just like every single time I host a room with my friends during the loading screen we all get booted to the main menu, but usually only the first game we try to play.

A lot of times I just turn my system off then.

Still....it could be worse.  It could be DAI.  Seriously.  ME3 is so far superior its not even funny.  And thats sad cuz DAI is the newer game.  I still love ME3.

Hey, is the extra lag because Sony uses worse connection, or because of BioWare quality assurance? I can't tell if the lag on this console is because of my PS3 chugging too much math or not? Also, hazard maps shouldn't of been introduced for PS3. Like adding insult to insult.

I can't believe you haven't noticed. It sucks 'cause the peasetree has to constantly stream data from the disc. Biovare was too lazy to allow peasetee users to install the game data onto the HDD hence the long a** loading times and frame stutters. Adding insults to injury, the memory leak problem occurred with the Rebellion DLC but was fixed with a patch and only to be reintroduced with Retaliation DLC. Players did complain and Biovare said they'd look into it, but they never did and the problem continued on to today. Finally, they ended support in March 2013 without solving the problems that were obvious. And no, the lag you experience is either your own connection to the host or the host's crap connection. I've had smooth matches where I felt like I was the host when I was not.

Cool, thanks for the informative information.

Was also thinking more lag maybe because of smaller player base too. So more overseas connections... maybe if I play in the evening more I'll hit folks in my time zone more. I'm cursed for mostly playing in the morning and afternoon these days.

I also finally have the WiiU version, but my brother hasn't bought a regular gamepad for the WiiU, so can't play that yet. As I don't want to dmg the limited edition Zelda WiiU pad thingy. But once I get there with the even smaller player base, I'll be able to have something else to make the comparison too.

And hey, since you nailed such excellent connections in the past, were any of them with a melee Krogan off host? Because man, I've never struggled playing melee Krogan than as I did on the PS3.

It also feels like when I host, the PS3 frame drops happen more often. But haven't hosted enough to know for sure... I know some stages like the hazard ones (think hazard giant might be the worst?) and even the non-hazard ones like Reactor, are pretty bad for frame drops. Do you PS3 folks know which particular maps are the worst for frame drops and lag? Thanks in advance.

Any of the DLC maps will give you crap framerate if you've been playing for an extended period of time. Regular maps aren't much of a threat, but there are no differences when you're watching a slide show. From me, watch out for Ghost Hazard, White Hazard, Goddess, Rio, Glacier Hazard, and London. I have the most problems with those after extended play. Ghost Hazard should be avoided at all times, if possible.

What qualifies as extended play. On X-Box I usually turn it on in the morning and leave it one until afternoon or evening (maybe this is why I had so many bad hosts on 360? Plus I only ever end up host after host migration on that console). On PS3 that would never happen, as either the PS3 crashes or you know better to restart it once in awhile.  But I want to know if just hanging in mp mode out of a lobby is enough to add to this timer or if it's just consecutive matches adding up?

I hear about bad host migrations. But what about a lobby instead of in-game host migrations, they bad too?

I don't have a Harrier yet, but on 360 scoping the Harrier and starting shooting would sometimes cause a lag spike or frame skip hiccup. Really annoys my headshot focus with that gun sometimes, as next thing I know I'm aiming in the sky (makes me look like a total scrub too. How rude <_<). Does this happen on PS3 too? Game comparisons is part of my gaming hobby, so until I have these answers, best thing I could do is ask the mighty advice of BSN.

The only patience PS3 owners need is when it come to listening to your complaining.  :P

If you preset maps and factions you can play indefinitely by deliberately avoiding Collectors, Ghost Hazard, Goddess, and Giant Hazard.  White Hazard, London, Vancouver, Rio and Reactor (non-hazard) will occasionally cause framedrop, so you should probably restart if that happens.

Your game comparison hobby is admirable, but it does seem kinda pointless when you're so clearly predisposed to dislike Sony.  The way you complain about the overall PS3 experience is the kind of thing that would have been punishable by death in the Empire.  I wouldn't like to be near you if you stubbed your toe or, heaven forbid, suffered a paper cut!  Your description of the 2-3 hours a system check requires is a wild exaggeration, which reduces any perceived validity your other points might have.  The system check takes around 10 minutes, slowing down around the 35% mark, and can be avoided completely - as you've discovered.

Yes, the xbox version runs more smoothly than the PS3 version.  Marginally.  I haven't had a hard freeze during my last 100 hours or so, and only two games where the framedrop became almost unplayable - both on Ghost Hazard.  And I have played Collectors several times, rebooting immediately afterwards.  If you host, following the advice you've been given, those marginal differences become even smaller.  And whether you host or not, you could try to STOP WHINING and just try to enjoy yourself man - I'm genuinely surprised the weed doesn't help you to chill a bit more.

^^^Yeah i was a bit surprised by the 2-3 hour system check as well...as you mentioned it takes about 10 minutes or less, when the system crashes it does this to protect the files. The ps3 experience isn't as bad as some suggest, we joke and laugh about it from time to time, but overall it isn't that bad.

I've had connections playing the off-host phoenix vanguard as if i was playing the host....the freezes, like someone else mentioned was an issue that bioware should have fixed, but i can partially understand their dilemma, the ps3 even at it's later stages was still a beast to code for, so while bioware stated they would look into it, they probaly didn't want to be bothered with it, and figured since the crashes didn't happen often, they would let that issue go by the wayside.

Weed is the reason I'm still playing on PS3. And the 2-3 hour system check did happen when I first seen it happen (not exactly sure how long, as I fired up the X-Box while that was going on, but checked on it a few time with the last check being around the 2 hour mark and it was still going). It was on my original PS3 model is it matters. But I now play on the PS3 slim to keep the other model wear and tear low. And I never seen it that long on the Slim model.

And yeah, complaining about it now doesn't do much good since BioWare is done with this game, but I sure wish Sony fans had a louder voice during when updates were still happening.

I'm more interested in documenting the differences between the two consoles from players that have access to both.

The maps you mentioned is of interest to me, since I'm not yet familiar with which ones are the most trouble (too bad Goddess is one of them. But then, Goddess in one of them on 360 too). And folks verifying on the Sony connection is nice to hear too.

I asked some other good questions in my last post. Like about host migration in the lobby if it's as bad as in game host migration. Anyone have an answer for this?

I didn't respond to that part because I wasn't entirely sure what you meant.  I'm still not, tbh.  Host migration is host migration, in lobby or in-game, in my experience.  I don't know what your parameters are for defining something as 'bad', although I doubt if they're similar to mine.   ;)   Takes about the same time and you keep your consumables.  What else is there to say? If it seems slow or 'laggy' I'll usually reboot.  Sometimes it's fine, sometimes it's not.

I was playing an 8-bit game today (Arkanoid on the ZX Spectrum; real hardware, not an emulator).  The game started lagging a bit, as it tends to when things get busy.  I caught myself thinking "the memory leak is getting bad, I should reboot soon".

Selling my Spectrum is one of my biggest regrets, as I adored its little rubberized keys, not to mention its simply stunning 48 kilobytes of RAM. I've tried an emulator, but it's just not the same.  I was particularly keen to play a game called "Codename MAT" (Mission: Alien Termination) which I became obsessed with in 1984, and was very much like a forerunner to Mass Effect.

I have some kind of undiagnosed tinnitus in my left ear, probably caused by several years as a concert photographer, but I can either 'hear' wi-fi, or I'm having occasionaly auditory hallucinations which sound exactly like loading the cassette tape of Manic Miner.

PS3 loading times are nothing to worry about by comparison.  :D

Hey, got a new question to PS3 vets. Say one of the pugs in a game hasn't reset his PS3 in awhile & on his end is getting mad frame drops, lag and what not. Would his memory leak (or whatever it is) also affect the other players? What if he was the host?

Alright, finally the PS3 troll store favours me, as I just unlocked the Scrubernut and Scrubfiltration Unit in my lastest Reserves Pack. Time to pug things up a notch on PS3. Oh yeah.

From my experience, to me it usually doesn't affect other players when host has mem leak even if it did you probably encounter delayed waves,  maybe delayed frames or endless extraction timer that never ends.

But in some cases if it's someone hosting from somewhere across the globe through many oceans and is getting lots of lag on laggy maps like goddess in particular than it should affect other players unless some of the other 3 players live close to the host.

All these 'PS3 issues'.

I've been playing it so long they aren't really issues, its part and parcel of the game for me. I don't stress about it anymore.

Resets give me time to go get something to eat or drink or go for a pee :D
