I would have loved to have had a longer main story.

It's kinda sad that the game went through so much cut content (as implied). Though it is understandable, redoing the main quests several times must've seriously exhausted the resources :s

Why was the main story made so short then? It's one of the more common complaints.

You DO realize that these companies still have to make profit, right? When there's no more budget you've gotta wrap things up.

But they obviously had a lot of resources for this one. I feel like the allocation of them for sidequests compared main plot seems more heavily slanted towards sidequests compared to previous installments.

Then they should have cut the fetch quests that do nothing for the overall story.

Should've cut some of the hub areas in favor of the story. Places like the emerald graves, emprise du lion, fallow mire, storm coast, and exalted plains have almost no story content in them and could easily be removed in favor of an expanded main quest.

They probably strained the resources when they kept going through content that gets cut

I fear that, after announcing that the world was going to be this huge interactive thing, and that every area was massive and interesting and you can go do all these different things, that they felt when the time came, that was what they had to deliver on. Honestly, I wouldn't have cared if the didn't fulfill on that promise so long as the story I got to play was enjoyable, rich, memorable and all around replayable. (I know many people have played several different characters and that people have enjoyed the game; I won't deny that, but to me, I am struggling to even make it past Haven now that I have completed the game once already - The story just does not interest me, whereas I can pick up any other Dragon Age or Mass Effect game and just replay them again and again, without complaint.)

Then that must have been a terrible decision when starting the project. Expecting to be able to do everything they wanted and just starting it without getting anything solid down. I would have gotten the story set in stone first, then added all the other areas and fetch quests that aren't relevant but just add more to the game. Seems like the logical way to do it, otherwise this happens and the story you want to tell can't be told because there's no money left to do it.

At the very least BW seems aware of the areas they need to improve on. They admitted in the Kotaku interview that the story was very weak, and more or less peaked at the battle at Haven. With luck in DA4 we'll get the best that DAO, DA2, and DAI had to offer. There are things that each game does well that the others fail at.

Fetch quests do something, in fact. They are there to entertain casual gamers.

They should have done less fetch quests and focus more on the main story.

I'm sure they'll learn from this and do better in the next game.

The overall story was set in stone, trying to set it in-game along with other things is where content gets cut or reworked

That's what I meant. Instead of diverting lots of money and resources into other areas that aren't critical, they could have gotten more hands and thrown more resources into the story aspect of the game. Once that's done, then set out to implement everything else. If they run out of resources, then they can cut back on that stuff, leaving the story largely intact. Why sacrifice elements of a great story to accomodate something that isn't necessary? Boggles my mind.

The main story should have been the main focus. Id rather they finished the main story first then worked all the other quest after around the main story. priority should have been main story, companion quest, then zone and fetch quest last.

Fair enough. With a large game like this, fetch quests are useful, whether that be brief entertainment or for those who can't play hours on end, allowing them to get some sense of accomplishment.

They have to divert the resources to multiple areas of the game, that's how all video games do it. Jugding by how they intended the story to go longer means that it did have a lot of resources

Might have had a main story worth a damn if they had cut out all the MMO crap and stuck with actual storytelling.

The way the mage-templar story was handled was a complete travesty.

I hope you all ALSO realize that fetch quests and filler content are a TON easier (and faster?) to create in the dozens than the main storyline. The main quests/storyline have to push through a higher standard than side content, so for every 5-10 fetchquests you get maybe 2-3 main quests.

You're going to have to severely limit the areas, fetch quests and what not to get a notable difference in main quest/storyline.

And one of Bioware's problems in previous games has been too small, too few and too linear areas. They were probably too cautious to take down several areas.

Would love some detail on the cut content. I'm not really surprised there was intent for a lot more. I love DAi, but found it slightly frustrating as you could feel quite a bit of it was likely streamlined both story and gameplay wise.

So the content cut was almost the same in DA 2... damn it must be a lot. It is gonna to be funny if they sell that Solas quest as a DLC, ah well.

They probably will make a Solas DLC with the content, it sounds like something they wanted to do
