Then they should have cut the fetch quests that do nothing for the overall story.
Yeah, or not create maps as ridiculously large as the Hinterlands.
"Bigger than all other DA maps combined" is not something laudable, it is just crazy and wasteful.

The ending of DA2 had me thinking DA3 was going to be all or mostly about the Mage-Templar War. I thought it was going to be an apocalyptic event that would engulf and change all of southern Thedas. Instead, the war gets superseded by Corpheus and the Breach.
Really? I had a strong feeling that the war was going to be interrupted by the "real" villain even before "The Fires Above" trailer first hit.
Always sucks to hear about things getting cut and not being able to really make what you were aiming for. But seeing how well this game has done for them and all the awards it got, here is hoping they get the time and budget to make all the things work better in the next one.
Next game being current gen only would help also
Me too, but I was expecting more than a plot relegated to a few small areas. It didn't feel like the chaotic destabilizing event it was made out to be.Really? I had a strong feeling that the war was going to be interrupted by the "real" villain even before "The Fires Above" trailer first hit.
"80% of the people that played DAI played humans, still appreciated the options to play any race"
This wouldn't be the case if they had given Qunari at least 1 racial armor, and longer hair instead of bald or short cornrows. Plenty don't want to play the elves due to their anorexic build, apparently Solas has been stealing all the food from the dalish. Typical bioware though, what can you say? They don't even realize that huge percentage is in large part due to them making the other races an afterthought.
It's sad to have so much content cut, but this is true for pretty much any game. It's good to know they thought about a Solas epilogue quest, maybe it will show up as DLC.
For me the best parts of the game is the (mostly) linear main story. Sadly it's too short for such a massive game. It's good to have some side content to do during the main quest, but i believe Bioware needs to find a balance between open areas, fetch quests or quests with no story/dialogue/decisions, side quests with meaningful content and main story content.
Be fair, they WERE something of an afterthought in this game, only added in the final extra year of development."80% of the people that played DAI played humans, still appreciated the options to play any race"

That looks like about the same percentage from DAO, actually.
"The next step is to find a transgender performer for the next trans gender character"
Why would that matter?
"Initial story of Dragon Age Inqusition was meant to be much MUCH longer"
Why wasn't it? They could've pulled back on the exploration and sidequests and added more story content.
Those are the two that really stood out to me.
Thanks for posting this. I am looking forward to the full interview.
Hopefully the cut contents will be revisited and added into future story DLC.

Yep. DAO was about 80% human, 15% elves and 5% dwarves. And I don't think anyone can claim that elves and dwarves were an afterthought in DAO.
What I'm really interested to know is what percentage of people played qunari. Did they cut into the elf percentage, the dwarf percentage, or both? Did more people end up playing qunari than dwarves?
(Godammit, now I wish I'd sent that question to David Gaider or Patrick Weeks!)
The 80% playing as humans doesn't surprise me. There are a lot of people who will only play an RPG as humans, even when given many choices in race.
That's what I meant. Instead of diverting lots of money and resources into other areas that aren't critical, they could have gotten more hands and thrown more resources into the story aspect of the game. Once that's done, then set out to implement everything else. If they run out of resources, then they can cut back on that stuff, leaving the story largely intact. Why sacrifice elements of a great story to accomodate something that isn't necessary? Boggles my mind.

Generally half or even 3/4 of any game's original design / ideas will be cut during editing and development especially in the final year prior to release, so this comes as no surprise. Would have been nice if they put more resources into the main story line, disappointing that they cut so much of that part in particular.
#Biowarechat Doesn't want to break the fans hearts describing some ideas he had for the game @dragonage @davidgaider
Too late, I still die a little inside every time I think about Exalted March. It's nice to hear about what could have been but my heart just can't take it ![]()
Mr Gaider had to take a month off after DA2 exalted march dlc got cut? He must have been pissed.

I remember the devs went to a Game Con at one point , and they all had Exalted March tee shirts.
I guess it got cancelled pretty late.
But clearly that's not what happened. When they say the content was cut they mean they wasted resources doing and RE doing the main quest areas. You can even see it a bit in the Crestwood dialogue.
Clearly that didn't happen. That's why I wrote how I would have personally undergone it. That way, I could still deliver on the story that I want to tell and the story fans expect from a BioWare game. I wouldn't care (that much) if the game was more linear than expected, or only had players running around one large, open area. Just so long as the story was great, I wouldn't care (that much) about the rest.
You DO realize that these companies still have to make profit, right? When there's no more budget you've gotta wrap things up.
and then make it into dlc -coughs-
and then make it into dlc -coughs-
I have a feeling a bit of what didn't make it into release will be paid for DLC.

I apologize; I wasn't clear. What I mean is that people keep thinking these crap quests are somehow stealing resources from the MQ. No. Those quests are banal and crap because they cost very few resources, with the sunk cost being the repeated re-design and cutting of the MQ. I bet if they cut 1/2 of the non-MQ content, totally, you'd maybe eek out a more developed ending. Maybe.
Cutscenes and dialogue are not the same as level design.
