Could....focus on arrows? Don't they do a ton of damage with his buffs?
How to have fun playing the Talon Merc without being a CTM-spamming a$$hole?

You can kill a Brute in 3 casts with AP arrows, Atlas needs 3 + a shotgun hit.
Still doesn't count as melee damage.

Why does it matter what damage it counts as?

Because I mentioned it in the OP that I wanted to finish my Combat Mastery/Melee Damage with this guy, but I was told his 'melee' will not count toward melee points in the actual challenge.

It almost made me ****** karate kick my tv last night when I tried him again after like 2 and a half years. Never EVER touching this kit again. Its damage output is good (if you want to abuse the **** out of CTMs aaand if you play a map that can support your mines), but it's often unreliable, and the dude is an absolute glass cannon, I went with extra shields on his fitness on the 4th rank, and I still went down like 20 times in a game. It was ridicilous.

This is for you nat:
Speaking of the Talon merc, this thread reminded me of when I tried him for the first time and made a thread about it.

Ah right okay.
Wait what DO the arrows count as?

I was thinking the same thing... The arrows and mines don't have challange points, so basically nothing. You'll get melee medals and that's it.

Unfortunately they suck at everything else. Given the choice, I'd rather be amazing at damage vs 95% of enemies than vs 5% of them. Or if they got damage bonuses vs chilled enemies, like concussive shot, or something. They really could have done something with that. I kinda wish they'd made concussive arrows a biotic power, then switched the Talon Merc and the Paladin. Because the Paladin is kinda techy for a sentinel. And the Talon is kinda...weird...for an engineer.
Yeah, I rarely use concussive arrows, and sometimes I even spec out of them. Using the GPS makes Phantoms easy - just shoot them with the GPS and they will stagger, then you can fill them full of arrows. I use the GPS with either Phasic or preferably Disruptor Ammo for dropping shields and staggering, then I use AP arrows for killing bosses. If you can use your GPS to stagger an enemy before you shoot your arrow, you will guarantee a hit and eliminate their ability to dodge.
IIRC, Banshees actually cause more problems than anything else with this setup, because if they bring up their bubble, you can't really damage them at all with your arrows. TTK becomes an issue. Not sure if that's correct, but I think it is.
Last thing - I don't think anyone has mentioned that with a charge weapon, you can let your homing arrows auto-aim and then release the trigger once it homes on the target. I have never gotten good at this, but the people who have seem to love it.

Go for full arrow damage in the fitness tree, spec out of concussive arrows and use a shotgun and Berserker Package.
This is my build (I think) and it works nicely at all ranges. The Scorpion is the anti-Phantom insurance.

Since we're talking about armor damage... obviously, duh. ![]()

Always need that insurance if you're host, but I've used Concussive Arrows to take care of phantoms on host too. Not a no-brainer, as with any powers vs. phantoms, but manageable when you have a full team. If you're fending off the full phantom/dragoon rush on your lonesome, that becomes...problematic.

Well, you could also use a GPS, Graal or Venom to deal with Phantoms and use a 2nd weapon for longranged combat.
The arrows don't hit moving targets at max range particularly well, so the Crusader allows you to snipe somewhat.
For me Scorpion + Crusader works nicely but other combinations might be better depending on playstyle.
