People have incredible capacity for vanity, malice and self interest.

That said, the opposite is also true. Unfortunately, western society looks at humility and "quiet" traits as a negative in both men and women. So you get a lot of people with fake confidence, which can be mistaken for arrogance or result in other unpleasant behaviour.

The key is to look beyond the superficial and hope the person beyond the bravado is decent.

Sometimes they will be, other times not so much.
