As a long-time Tarantino fan, I am cautiously optimistic about the Hateful Eight, as I was underwhelmed by Django & Inglourious Bastereds.

I loved the first 3 Tarantino films, as well as Kill Bill. (maybe my favorite of his movies)

Death Proof & the 4th vignette in Four Rooms are also brilliant.

Any thoughts?

It's T. I imagine I'll enjoy it on some level. Though nothing will ever beat Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction.

Bring on the blood and foot shots.

I actually knew that this was going to be about Tarantino (neener neener). :)

Anyways, I can't decide between Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown as far as my favorite QT movie; Reservoir Dogs just ranks behind those movies for me. I didn't see Inglourious Basterds, but liked Django better than the OP did. Strangely, it makes for an interesting comparison with Lincoln (released in the same year) as far as the films' respective takes on slavery goes. Here's hoping that the Hateful Eight turns out very good (I was going to say great, but that type of rhyming is too cheesy even for me).

He has said he will only make ten films. So if this is the truth, Hateful 8 HAS to be awesome...

Kevin Smith said he was only going to do one more film after Red State.

Tusk just released (meh) and there are rumors at a Clerks 3.

Directors aren't trust worthy.

True, but Kevin Smith is at a very different point in his career in terms of relevance (also, I think I might know about as much about how to properly set up a shot as Smith does); QT's legacy is secure, and he has less of a 'need' to go on past ten films. We'll see what happens.

Fun and useless bit of trivia: Tarantino didn't actually have a high-speed camera when he filmed that "hero walk" at the beginning of Reservoir Dogs, so to achieve the slow motion effect, he simply repeated every frame.

I DID NOT know that, thanks

Agreed. But I don't think Smith cares about relevance, he likes to tell his stories. I used to listen to his podcast where he talked about if podcasting had been a thing 20 years ago he probably would have just done that. I think the bug crept up again like it has with others even before these two.

As far as legacy goes. Smith I don't think will ever be to T's level, but I think he's secured himself as an indie darling.

Tarantino is unique for two reasons; He is shameless in his admission that he makes movies about movies. That is, his references & sensibility are largely stolen, however this very style is what makes his films instantly recognizable.

Second, he knows his limits, his scruples. He knows he cannot bend to corporate whims, he can never be a "hollywood director" and because of this he has many more obstacles and barriers to his creative expression. The only real obstacle (other than $) IMO is his own self-indulgence, and his own sense of thematic satruation. By that I mean; sticking to what Tarantino does best, while walking the line between his strengths and being a parody of himself. (Which he has come dangerously close to)

I actually love Django Unchained.

IMO, it's his best film to date.

I've always wanted for Pulp Fiction to be edited back into sequential order as a experiment to see if it's a better or worse movie.
