How often do Colbert videos have a like/dislike bar like that?

 

And if Anita wants to block comments thats fine, but then why block likes/dislikes? Thats completely masking criticism/disagreements.

 

I (obviously) can't speak for her, but if it were me, I would probably do it because a place like Youtube is about as bad as it get's for intellectual critique.  It would be safe to assume that every one of those people that threaten her would have (or get) multiple google+ accounts just to dislike her videos and that would make those rankings useless anyway.

 

The thing I don't get - largely because I have little to no interest in the two sides of this thing - is why those that oppose her care so much.  Let's say it's all true.  She lies about the games.  She doesn't own them and just takes footage from other gamers.  She's not making videos from this kickstarter thing that keeps getting mentioned....all of it, every last (semi-reasonable) accusation levelled at her is accurate....so what?

 

She wants....women to be treated the same as men in games? Right?  I don't see a problem there.  I also don't see it happening.

 

The developers/publishers are not going to change their ways unless their customers start changing their ways.  If, as we are led to believe, those that dislike Anita are the overwhelming, uber-majority of gamers, then the customers are not going to change, so really, all that will happen is Anita and those that support her are going to continue shouting into a vacuum.

 

I don't want political correctness to be imposed on game developers - I play so few of them and I live in the most politically correct English speaking nation on earth (New Zealand) - that the change would probably drive me to stop gaming altogether.  I don't want The Witcher 3 to have it's art compromised, nor do I want Game of Thrones to be compromised (or the books it is based on).  Straight, white male gamer here, living the wrong side of 35 and when I see one of Anita's videos (I have watched two or three) all I see is an articulate and intelligent person that I disagree with.

 

She is not abusing puppies or murdering children.  She is arguing her - highly unpopular in some circles - point of view.  Stop responding to her and you deprive her issues of oxygen.

 

But at the very least, the very least, stop threatening her.  Stop saying "well, she brought it on herself".  Apathy to threats of violence against a person for having opinions is not a good look.

If women are to be treated the same in games as men are, it goes both ways yes? So would a good representation of a man in a game also be an emotionless empty character with nothing to them?

 

Apparently being a person with positives, negatives, strengths, weaknesses, tastes, quirks, flaws, history, motivations, and emotions is somehow not good enough.

Has there been much debate, though, from either side? As mentioned I've only watched a handful of her videos and, - I think - two of Thunderf00t's "response" videos. Neither contained debate (as you'd expect), just analysis. Have the anti-Sark people been innocent of name calling and personal attacks on people who express support for Anita's position? I'll believe it if you say that is the case, although I'll confess to being stunned.

Debate would be good, since there would at least be nominal "rules of engagement". Zero comment/zero rating videos followed by response videos doesn't seem like much of a debate, though.

While I think that women deserve equal treatment in games (and everything else), I appear to disagree with Anita as to what that means, exactly. The issue I have is that too many people seem to think that having an opinion means tacit acceptance of threats of personal violence. Whatever "wrongs" Anita has perpetrated, they do not justify the response she's received.

Are people really so naive as to believe that Anita/Mcintosh (the guy who really runs FemFreq) blocks comments and likes/dislikes because of Trolls and potential abuse? Those are the people Anita relies on. They keep her in the spotlight, she wouldn't have had the platform she has and been on things like The Colbert Report or being placed in the TIME 100 most influential people in the world if she'd never been harassed. If those people went away people would stop caring about her.

 

The comments are blocked on FemFreq videos for a number of reasons. Firstly, to censor civilised debate that could enlighten or change the minds of her followers. Obviously the majority are extremists who will never be swayed, as the conviction in their ideologies are so strong that little things like facts or evidence or studies can't shake that belief. There are some moderates however, that lean towards Sarkeesian's way of thinking, but could be swayed if provided with evidence that Anita is feeding them bullshit. Those people are why debate is discouraged. The other reason they are blocked is because otherwise there would be irrefutable proof that there are tons of women that disagree with FemFreq. Anita and Mcintosh use their twitter to tell their cult that only evil, nasty, patriarchal men disagree with them, only ever retweeting "harassment" from men, either via their tweets or youtube responses to her.

Umm... that's not what she's saying at all. Her point is that The Scythian does not have gendered signifiers, and that her story and journey are inspired by a myth arch which is more common in male protagonists. Also, the fact that

The Scythian actually get's to preform the Heroic Sacrifice at the end of her quest - and that other characters of the game's world pay tribute to her (which are all very male-centered tropes)

 

is what contributes to the fact that she's a "positive (example of a) female character". Point being that in this context her role in the story and her character in the context of that particular game and that particular story make her a positive female character. Also, let's be honest - does The Synthian really have any less character than any other 60-bit silent protagonist? Or any silent protagonist, for that matter - Chell comes to mind. 

 

She's not saying that *Insert Any Give Female Character Here* should be exactly like The Scythian in all aspects because feminism, and all other female characters should go wither and die in the corner. She's quite literally explaining what makes this particular female character in this particular context a positive female character, and what contributes to it. I mean Anita is doing Jade from Beyond Good and Evil next in her Positive Female Characters in Video Games series (which The Synthian video belongs to), who is a very different type of character.
