I want to build a two handed warrior but I hate running around with 2/3 of my life drained and no guard...makes me nuts.  I could live with the 2/3 drain if I had some good guard.

Any ideas on builds.

Also any benefit in playing a Quinary v. human?

Any and all help appreciated.

Take Challenge / Charging Bull / It’ll cost you / Unbowed / Still Standing from the Vanguard tree

Forge a weapon that gives +Guard on hit

I've soloed two dragons in Emprise du Lion with that, should work out fine if you keep using the defensive skills on cooldown.

Combat Roll is nice too, lets you dodge a lot of nasty hits (If a dragon is about to strike and your charge is on cooldown just roll out of the way for example)

I will print this up, thank you.

There are tons of two handed weapons out there, what are your favorites?

If you have the Black Emporium DLC check out their stuff, they have a lot of nice schematics (Sulevin Blade for example).

http://dragonage3.wi...apon Schematics

Check out the list for some other stuff and where to get it.

Instead of Challenge, try War Cry with the upgrade; not only do you get guard for every enemy nearby, but also a 200% armor bonus for 10 seconds.

It sort of depends really.  I found I could generate enough guard most of the time with Fade Touched Obsidian giving me 3 guard on hit (from armor), then just Charging Bull whenever it was off cooldown.  I was running Reaver, so I usually tried to shoot for around 50% health though.

In any case if you are going DPS, I would go Unbowed after Bull and grab constitution and guard upgrades from the Vanguard tree.  You can potentially also steal Bear Mauls the Wolves, Turn the Bolt and Turn the Blade from Sword and Shield, but you will have to sink extra points in abilities you won't use to unlock them.  Not guard exactly, but helps with damage reduction.  I personally don't like generating extra threat on my 2H, at least early, which is why I avoided War Cry and Challenge (actually I took them and tried it, but didn't like it and respec'd).  The upgrade to Block and Slash generates guard, but it isn't the greatest ability for that.  It is mainly decent for damage mitigation if you can get the timing down, and some bonus damage early.

If you are going tank you will have better luck with pure guard generation since you can take Champion and get Walking Fortress / Siege Breaker which will generate guard, and also To The Death / En Garde which is good for larger targets.

I'm too lazy to look myself, but the first page or two of this forum has some good 2H build discussion threads. Might have "Iron Bull" or "Reaver" or even "SnS" in the title, but don't be fooled, 2H gets some good advice in those threads.

I would suggest 2H Champion. I made a build guide a while back that may still assist you. Link is in my signature

He could also go with a set of armor that grants the % chance to grant invulnerability (Fade Cloak or Walking Fortress) or with a chance to activate Unbowed; I had them pop up enough to pretty much count as putting the point in the tree. It would give a free Unbowed chance at least which can pump out huge amounts of guard depending on how many targets he's got around him

I went 2H Reaver with guard on hit+chance to Fade Cloak and just ate health out of my targets when they got through guard. I did go with Charging Bull, but I went with War Cry first because I was running into the midst of everything so it made better sense with the build I was working towards. I was also rolling with Block and Slash because with either an axe or sword you can hit multiple foes with the counter strike if they're close enough together, and it grants decent amount of guard when you put the second point into it.

I'll second this. Alren's build is both very effective and an absolute blast to play :)

Might I suggest not worrying so much about guard, other than some guard-on-hit on your armor? Take Blackwall or Cassandra with you to tank and let them worry about building aggro and guard and leave the vanguard tree to them. Take some reaver and battlemaster skills and put heal-on-kill on your weapon. There are some good reaver guides out there, except a lot of them still include vanguard skills, which are unnecessary in my opinion, even on nightmare. Don't waste points on building guard that you could use to improve how fast you kill things.

That being said, I just completed a nightmare playthrough using Iron Bull as my tank and lone warrior in the party. So if you want to go that route for your inquisitor, it's definitely doable.

I use upgraded War Cry. Basically I start with upgraded Grappling Chain and upgraded Mighty Blow and upgraded War Cry. That's my first six points in the game.Target an enemy ranged character (archer or mage). Throw out the grappling chain, haul them in and kick them in the face. Smash them with mighty blow. By then, the melee characters will be gathering. Hit War Cry and bang, instant guard. Depending on how many melee enemies there are, sometimes even instant full guard.

Once you get guard on hit and heal on kill stuff on your armour and weapons, you can always respec out of War Cry but those three are my golden ones for pre-Skyhold at the very least.
