Aesthetically electric is my favorite. I probably use more fire spells tho in game.

I know this is absolutely stupid, but I spec my mages to the elements depending on what I think suits them. I always spec Solas as electrical, Vivienne as fire and Dorian as cold.

Although there is some logic there; Solas with Rift Mage + Electrical is great for crowd control. Vivienne with Knight Enchanter and Fire passives is a killing machine, while Dorian as Necromancer and Cold means he has a good balance, any enemies immune to panic are dealt with by ice.

I always spec Vivienne for cold, because winter's grasp is how you meet her, and she's the Ice Queen.  Solas learns fire spells when he's got an opening between spirit spells, and Dorian is so shocking, he's gotta wield lightning.  That's my routine, anyway.

But Vivenne is the Iron Lady? She is the emotional embodiment of 'winter' and cold haha. I use your same logic though.

Vivenne is chilly, Solas is storm (because honestly I just feel like it 'fits', as Ancient Elves seem quite in tune with nature, what with their crystal palaces laced in the tree tops) and Dorian just seems more Inferno; Tevinter is a tropical country and all Tevinter mages so far encountered tend to use the school as well. Admittedly, he's a pariah from said society, but I imagine it's the school that as a whole, the country excels at.

I remember using mostly fire and a bit of electricity in my first playthrough (normal). The more I increased the difficulty the less focused on damage my mage became. I am currently playing on nightmare and my char is totally into ice. For CC and some debuffs I guess. I never read guides and strategy stuff though, so I'm sure my choices might not be the best ones for that purpose. I know most people go KE+fire, but I think it synergizes pretty well with ice too.

I'll probably try to put some more points in electricity next time, I've always had a soft spot for static cage (that awesome animation...).

Same here, although I find that fire suits very well both Solas and Dorian. Dunno about Vivienne, I've never used her much.

I find storm incredibly underwhelming, because I think it has pretty bad CCC. I don't get all the fuss about static cage, but it might just be my playstyle. I do like energy barrage. I rely most heavily on fire, though I do like some of the spells in ice (fade step primarily).

I usually go deep into storm when i play rift mage good synergy between the two of them and you also got shock (1st) + weakness (2nd) will cause sleep which can be combo off with immolate or energy barrage to cause nightmare. afterward i pick up early points in inferno and winter to balance out my options if i fight something with a heavy resistance to electricity,

Would like to use winter's grasp + stone-fist for the combo but still waiting on that fix...

I man can dream tho...

I have been recently using a elementalist build with the rift mage. I love it.  Firestorm, fire mine, Ice storm and winters grasp.

However, note that it only works if you're a rift mage solely because the mana needed to cast rapidly can only be achieved by the rift mage.

Nowadays, any Mage I take into my party that isn't the Inquisitor doesn't use their specialization. Instead, they all dip into the Spirit, Cold, and Storm trees for supporting the party and setting up combos.

I'm utterly obsessed with Lightning Cage. I'm Rift Mage specialised and I barely use the skills from that tree any more - Lightning Cage + my staff + Immolate is absolutely shredding everything to pieces. Even for foes that are lightning immune, I'll still plant a cage simply for it's CC aspects. It's also great fun to use against non-lightning resistant dragons.

My staff is specced for high crit chance and high crit damage with the masterwork being 10% chance for 5-hit hidden blades. I'm currently level 21, completed Emprise last night steamrolling everything in my path. I always play on Nightmare.

I have a Qunari Necromancer I'm working on for an alternative story playthrough, but I have a feeling I'm going to end up using Lightning Cage again alongside Walking Bomb... it's just too. damn. good. to pass up on.

Static / Lightning cage is great.

I am currently playing with a Rift mage focused on Fire with a deviation into cold upto Ice Armor and Ice Mine.  My eight are Spirit Blade, Fade Cloak, Fire Mine, Fade Step, Immolate, Energy Barrage, Ice Mine, Mark of the Rift.  Mark will eventually be replaced by the DLC ability.

I am running this with Varric as a Dagger Artificer who has three abilities on preferred, Stealth+, Elemental Mines+, Hook and Tackle.  Stealth+ really helps Varrics survivability since it cleanses status effects like burning and poison.

With this combo Shadows and Stealthers are nothing but meat.  There are so many bombs and mines lying around that they blow up a lot and if there is one around I put down both an Ice mine and a Fire Mine.  Even if one targets me I have a lot of damage resistance due to the ice armor and guard.  I likely have barrier as well.  Varric has a tendency to come out of the shadows and twin fang stab anything that gets frozen.  This is hilarious though sometimes frightening.  The little dwarf decloaking and making that sound as his target explodes in shards of broken ice is quite an experience.  If you have a stealther in sight while cloaked you can target it quite effectively with immolate as well.

Mana Surge (passive to the lower left of Winter's grasp) is amazing with Ice Armor.  When my barrier drops the freeze goes off and even if nothing is nearby I see Ice Armor form on me.  That is a very nice side effect and I am really enjoying it.  I am looking forward to the DLC.

After I finish up with my current KE project I think I will follow your lead in this.  A fire and ice rift mage.  I really want to try blizzard out and haven't yet experimented with it.  Did you play with Ice Wall or Ice Mine or neither?  I was considering not using either since I find it hard to dispense with Energy Barrage.

I did not, however, if you were comfortable with not having either fade step or barrier you could easily do so.

My full eight was:

Barrier

Fadestep

Winters grasp

Ice storm

Fire mine

Fire storm

Pull of the abyss

Stone fist

Isn't ice storm an upgraded blizzard?

My first PT was a Rift Mage with a strong Fire focus. I mainly used Fire due to RP reasons(Firestorm is Fire!) and I just love to throw those Walls around :P

I also used some Storm on him, mainly chain lighting and lighting bolt.

Now my second Mage is a Qunari Necomancer who almost exclusively uses Winter! It is actually quite effective in CC department, it's a shame so many creatures are resistant to Cold.
