Hi peepz! :D
So.. I can't really draw, but I'm really fascinated with it nontheless, and even if I'm not talented I still have a desire to create. So what I do is I take different screenshots (which I've taken in game), put them together and paint over it, all in Photoshop. Lately I've added pieces I've drawn myself, even though it ends up looking a bit weird, but I'm working on getting better!

So, without further ado, here's my work (from oldest to newest):

This is not difficult, even if it's somewhat time-consuming, and I don't want to offend anyone who actually has talent. But I'm still proud of these, and wanted to share them here at the forum! :)

I also wanted to upload the original screenshots to show how big of a difference it is, but I don't know if you can add images directly from your computer instead of using a URL, and I don't really want to upload the images elsewhere.

Kisses!

Oh, and maybe I should have posted the pictures behind spoiler warnings, but I don't know how to do that. I'm sorry!

I think they're awesome! That's a great way to work out anatomy. I use references too. Even then, it's hard to get the color/shading technicalities down, which you did perfectly.

& Your character is very pretty. 3 and 6 are my favorites.  ^_^

Spoiler tags is in a scroll down menu under the twitter icon or just type/insert image between this: [0spoiler] [0/spoiler] minus the 0.

As for the paintings, painting over 3d models is quite common practice among professionals. Although I do think you should do some colour studies from photos. Just pick a decent scenery and colour pick objects in the scene and figure out what colour they are. For example polished steel under the blue sky will be very blue and very brown. One reflecting the sky and the other reflecting the earth, respectively.

Also, don't be afraid to throw in your own colours! Play around with layer settings, adjust the opacity of your brush and hammer in some new colors to see what it does. The game has it's own kind of lighting so relying on it giving you good colours isn't a very good idea.

That said, I am glad to see more people pitching in their fan art. Keep it up!

Did a quick paint over. Took me about half an hour to get it to this point. Although the scene's lighting was confusing, I tried my best to make it look more lively and adding a bunch of colors to help make the character become part of the environment. And vice versa

Thank you! I'm still very much working on it, but using screenshots as a reference is also a good way to maintain the Dragon Age "feel" which I really like! :)

Holy moly, you made her look amazing! I just don't think I have an eye for it, but I will try to keep the lighting in mind and not be afraid of using bolder colors. Thank you!

Don't mention it. Another thing I'd like to point out is that everything in Dragon Age: Inquisition tends to have very high level of glossiness to them. Not sure if it's artistic choice or other reason.

Spoiler

I'm actually using PS Elements 10, so it looks a bit different. But I'm guessing that it's the same option as Enhance > Adjust Lighting > Brightness/Contrast, which I do actually use, even though maybe not enough. I'll keep that in mind!

Update:

3831829-1431648072.jpg

I'm aware the anatomy of this image looks very strange, and I should probably have spent more time on it. I also forgot to change the color of the planket-thingy.

There's a fanfic that goes with this one, but it's not done yet. Basically the beginning of it involves Lavellan returning to the glade where you have your last romantic scene with Solas, and.. feelings happens. I don't know why I do this to myself.

Painting over screenshots and combining them still requires a certain level of skill, originality and knowledge of composition, so you're really talented as far as I'm considered! :D

It's a great (and quite unique) way to ease in to drawing c:

Thank you, I think that's the most important thing, and why a quick comic of something can be just as appreciated as a beautiful artwork :)

I actually feel like I've learned a lot about drawing since doing this, mainly how lighting and colors work. I'm also really proud of the last image I did, since I added a lot of things that wasn't there to begin with. I would never be able to draw it from scratch though.

Progress is being made! I would do some more adjustments for you but I don't have the means at the moment. You should try playing around with the dodge and burn tool on Photoshop to try and push some highlights (or tone down darker areas). Be mindful of light sources in your images as well. Light reflects from everything around us, so make sure you try to consider all the colors in the scene.

Composition is also important, but you should tackle one or two things at a time, no more. Although it wouldn't hurt to reduce the amount of scenes where characters are staring directly at the viewer. As a general rule, try to have them focus on something important in the scene (like another person). Which is why I personally think the 3rd and the 7th one you made is the stronger ones.

Thank you! I tried to study the paint over you did for me, and I think it's actually helped me a great deal. I use a lot more layers now instead of painting as much directly on to one, and that has made me less afraid of trying out different colors and stuff. As for the dodge/burn, thank you for that. I didn't even realize the tools were there, so I've basically been using the brush tool with different colors and opacity to create shadows and highlights.

I will try to mind where the character focus as well, I didn't even consider that actually.

Your advise is invaluable :)

Oh, these are beautiful!  ^_^ It didn't even occur to me to try painting over screenshots. That's a good idea! It definitely gives them a warmer feel. Sort of nostalgic and fairytale. I especially love the one of Cole, and the one of the Inquisitor just underneath (in her bedroom). Plus the dance scene one with Solas. Simply lovely!

I just want to make sad portraits of my Lavellan, all day every day.
Also, can you spot the creeper?

Wow this is amazing. I love 3 and 7. Even if it's a paint over, you're an amazing artist.
