Yay, more semantics.
No but they are definitely alive, I just don't consider them to be people.
If they are alive, then they weren't killed.

The person was killed.
You have a wierd definition of the word "killed". The personality was destroyed perhaps, but the person still lives, albiet in a changed mental state.

Will is what makes a man.
Not flesh, dreams or even emotion.
And will remains.
"Florianne, I have determined that, as a consequence of your sheltered and privileged lifestyle, you are unable to properly comprehend the consequences of your actions, and are thus unable to be properly rehabilitated by any mundane punishment I may bestow upon you. To spare you the wasteful and impotent sentence of death, you will instead be granted an alternative treatment, that your behavior might be reformed and that you may continue living as a useful, and productive, member of society. Tranquility."
I wonder how the public would react to a wider application of the Rite.
Will is a team later, not a solo player. Will needs a reason and cannot exist without emotion. Tranquil people have no will.
And yet they have creativity, drive, a sense of need and compulsion.
They have every prerequisite for self awareness.
And yet they lack will?
I'd say your wrong.

They also have a sense of self-preservation, seek familiarity, and can express preferences.

I didn't say that they don't want to live, but that's one of the very few things they share with people.. and frogs. Etc.They can quite clearly express their displeasure in dying and there have even been instances where they have taken the opportunity to remove themselves from a situation where that could be an outcome.
You don't see that as showing a will to live?

Though at least dogs and cats know either to defend themselves or hide, unlike that Tranquil in Ferelden's Circle (Owen was it? Something).Just like dogs or cats.
But apparently not enough so they can care for themselves, isn't that what Minaeve said?
Just like dogs or cats.
Which are most certainly alive, last time I checked.

They are not people.
Tranquil are.
No, you said they have no will but some have clearly shown a will to live....
If a person turns into a vegetable they are dead to me. There is no difference as far as I'm concerned.
Which, luckily, means nothing to the larger community. Death has some very clearly defined parameters, which the Tranquil do NOT live up to. So the Rite is not an execution.
