1) DA writers have not studied biology.

2) Emotions in DA are a completely different than irl, and function according to different rules.

It is an instinct. It doesn't take will to preserve ones life, it takes will to overpower instincts such as the contrary for example - suicide.

Which, luckily, means nothing to the larger community. Death has some very clearly defined parameters, which the Tranquil do NOT live up to. So the Rite is not an execution.
