I never got to play an AW before the nerf, but the fact that spirit blade can be blocked/deflected by swordsman + it doesn't seem to deflect any ranged attacks from the sides/back + and the animation can't even be cancelled like other melee weapons, makes it seem even weaker than a normal melee weapon attack (given the mana cost) IMO. If you miss once with it, its like your barrier is totally gone since it takes so long for the animation to end. Pair that up with the fact the AW barrier seems to drain much faster than other classes'. Was it like that before the nerf?

Yeah, spirit blade alone wouldn't keep you comfortable on barrier against certain encounters. For things that blocked, it was smart to shock them with Chain Lightning first. If you missed an attack or only hit one enemy you'd be fine as long as you're alive you can make a comeback with your barrier. All you need is a good upgraded fade cloak, chain lightning, or upgraded fade step into a group and you should be back to a comfortable barrier amount.

Fighting one enemy could be riskier than fighting 5 with AW, though some enemies give back a juicy amount of barrier. I usually noticed this on the guardian reaver. Maybe they were weak to spirit.

Only enemy that is capable of killing the mighty AW is the even mightier RTC.

I've been using a new build (old one got broken after the SB nerf); Spirit Blade, Chain Lightning, Fade Cloak and Stone Fist. I was so used to having Fade Step that I felt like I couldn't live without it, but I am quite thoroughly enjoying having Stone Fist in its stead. It allows me to more effectively engage enemies at range, and in most situations in melee as well. Stone Fisting an assassin going after an teammate never gets old.  :)

High dragons are mightier, as they are a far greater a threat than the RTC in a solo scenario (group scenarios aren't worth mentioning since bosses can easily be smashed by them). RTC is easy to avoid; can't avoid getting close to the high dragon as an AW (gotta maintain those barriers, and ranged attacks alone will not do it. Doesn't help that Gathering Storm currently doesn't work when attacking high dragons). And when in such close range, it's possible to get smashed in rapid succession before being able to recover, even with Fade Cloak.

No it's not. I've been farming dragon loot on aw solo/duo because of the constant connection issues in ferelden castle pugs. Pick storm dragon because it's weak to spirit, open with stonefist, fade step under it and start hacking away. Fade cloak to recover when it kicks you. I don't have any trouble taking her down, it's even faster when there's two of us. Frost dragon is easily solo-able too, just takes more time. Haven't tried inferno because it's a pain in the butt to get to her due to constant burning.

That's, like, your opinion, man....couldn't resist, I'm sorry, lol. Joking aside, I have an easier time with the RTC (since now I know how to not throw the kitchen sink at him and get screwed due to invincibility frames stealing barrier generation). I don't use Fade Step with my current build; that's why I've had trouble with dragons when I got stuck soloing them on a few occasions (first time I got D/C from the servers, and the third time I failed due to getting smashed 2-3 times in a row).

I wouldn't use fade step for anything else than soloing either. I have to add that while it's relatively easy to solo dragons with AW it also gets old really fast. Usually takes two games in a row for me to get bored out of my mind :D. I'd much rather play in a group setting but until something is done about the constant disconnects and host migrations I'll do what it takes to get me some of that dragon loot.

I haven't had too much trouble with connection issues (though the disconnect on my very first perilous dragon run was very irritating). And I agree, playing with others is absolutely preferable to soloing.

The point is, that it negates entire roles, such as that of the Legionnaire.  Why even bother playing a tank, when the AW can tank, and DPS?  It's a mage, it shouldn't be tankier than the tank.  Personally, the way I see the AW, is it should be a glass cannon.

Then again, my opinion could be rooted in the years of MMOs I played, where roles actually meant something.

AW is as much a tank as a lego.

Tanks don't have to wear heavy armor. I bet you would be confused by TOR's Consular/Inquisitor having a tank spec.

The Arcane Warrior as a specialization has always been the antithesis of the mage "glass cannon" archetype. In Dragon Age Origins the Arcane Warrior was a mage who equipped Heavy armor and wielded a sword/shield. In no iteration of the Arcane warrior has it been presented as a squishy mage and I wouldn't expect it to be one in multiplayer.

As far as balancing, I wonder if reducing the barrier generation efficiency but granting the slower barrier decay talent like Zither has would be a reasonable fix.

Yes, Arcane Warrior in DA:O was a beast. Best class in the game to me.

Yet despite the nerf, he's still arguably one of the best classes in damp...

Interesting proposition, though if that were to happen it would need to be baked into the class, like the Katari's guard generation. AWs already have to spread points enough just to make Spirit Blade viable; forcing another skill point expenditure like that would be a **** move.

AW can tank just fine without the blade - literally, without even having it between your skills. And if I, with crap promotions, can play the "new" AW, while not even being a main class for me (I really like the Legio more), then I`m sure people that have it as a "main" can do better. As a tank it is still invincible. If you are hell bent on using the sword, well... get the Legio.

For me, it is now between 2 choices of tanks - melee (Legio) and ranged (AW).

The only drawback I see in here is that it doesn`t dance, sing AND bake while tanking anymore. It really depends what you are after, I guess.

AW is actually fun nowadays with stone fist builds, granted dmg is less, post patch -you can no longer text on your phone, surf the web, and eat doritos while holding down the sb button all the while extract in zone 5.

Nope. 4/4 perilous zone 5 dragon disconnect/ctd's in 1 day. Haven't bothered with the castle since.

No, it's actually easier post patch due to strength of spirits...

I feel your pain brother, I can't be bothered to make another thread about it only to be ignored.
