I know just about every monster back to the earliest days of D&D, i,e, the first Monster Manual in the late 70s.

So, when I was fighting Tolgerias in the Planar Sphere (or was it Lavok?), he summoned two 'Curmudgeons' one after the other.  Maybe I'm spelling in wrong b/c curmudgeon is a word.

Anyway, anyone know what these are?  Is there a description somewhere? (I can't find in any Monster Manual I-III, Fiend Folio, Demonicon or Hordes of the Abyss).

Are they Demons?

What spell is he using to summon them?  A Gate brings in a Pit Fiend/Balor so that's not it & neither is Cacofiend.

I've tried for two hours to figure it out to no avail.

I give up...I need help.

It would surprise me if he summoned two curmudgeons. It wouldn't surprise me if he summoned two cornugons.

Does cornugons sound right to you? Did they toss lightning bolts? Did they have stun and poison on hit effects?

Best,

A.

I thought the same - Wikipedia has a very brief entry about its D&D derivation.

Ya'll win the prize.  Thanks for the help.

Btw, Cornugon were known as Horned Devils or Malebranch in the first p&p Monster Manual (late 70's).  I was not familiar w/the more recent reference.  They were the 'least of the Greater Devils.' They're referenced in the more recent Fiendish Codex I (Tyrants of the Nine Hells).

Summoning TWO curmudgeons is quite scary. Having to deal with one is quite bad enough. :D

A curmudgeon is a crusty irascible cantankerous old person full of stubborn ideas. I thought that it was a local dialect word, since I have only heard it used in Yorkshire. However the free dictionary says that I was wrong.

Yeah, there were books in the late '80s/early '90s called "The Portable Curmudgeon". Great word.
