My Duelist is a pure Gunslinger, so my answer on this question is pretty obvious. I've promoted her like 8 times or so as a pure Gunslinger and, maybe I am too conservative, but I can't imagine playing this class any other way.

What's your fourth skill then? Keelhaul? Evade? Gangway? Blinding shot? None at all? I run out of passives to invest in by level 12 on the xbow tree.

I really like keelhaul and ambush myself. Keelhaul marks several at once and has cc to slow enemies if you get them chained together. Ambush damage is better than flank attack and even if the bonus doesn't trigger it can help rip an enemy away from a squishy teammate since it taunts.

Stamina seems easier to manage for me with ambush instead of flank attack.

I use this build, and it works well for my style. Give it a whirl and see how it works for you.

(all upgraded)
Bolt
Flashing Steel
Broadsides
Evade

yeah!!
at some point I figured this out, too.

I could not imagine skipping flank attack.
but why not?

with Broadsides you can prime so many enemies,
then you just "evade" into this group + flashing steel. done.

After trying different builds of the Duelist I choose Broadsides, since it takes care of grouped enemy archers really well.

I don't like Swashbuckle because losing Elusive on higher difficulty is suicide (I don't have tons of promotions).

Exactly.  Evade can be used to close distance as well as creating distance, and dodging melee/ranged attacks (with correct timing).  Also, I like having the upgrade so I can damage enemies too; two birds, one stone.

Both? I go for broadsides first, though.

FYI: Ambush is use-able as a gap closer when you have a target selected, especially when you start with a height advantage.

I really like the idea of keel haul and gangway, but the problem is that I also want to keep an elusive generator, I prefer flanking attack or ambush, and broadsides, meaning I would have to give up bolt, which seems to be a given necessity for most builds. Will post back with results.

As an update, it's a very safe and defensive skill set, dropping bolt for keelhaul. The problem is, however, that since it's no one else's job to keep things alive long enough for me to hit for elusive stacks, having only one generator left me with at best one stack at any given time. However, the enemy slow, and rapid advance on archers came in very handy. This was on threatening, level 14. Might drop keelhaul again, and pick up ambush or flank strike, I like gangway enough for leaving bolt out.
