Do you think Humans will ever build a real Citadel like the M.E. One. The I.S.S. Doesn't count.

I don't think so. We humans are capable for a lot of things, but making a whole "city" in space which is capable of supplying itself and it's citizens with enough power and air? It would take centuries to build it if it's possible.

Well, they didn't want to go for the Death Star, so I doubt we'll get the Citadel anytime soon either. :(

It costs a lot of money to haul a simple toilet into space. I don't see us lifting materials into orbit for a 40 km long structure any time soon.

Not in our lifetime for sure. But in the distant future, assuming humanity survives, I don't see why not.

Assuming humanity survives this climate change. Assuming humanity survives the inevitable death of the Sun. Assuming of course that we don't destroy ourselves before any of these things take place.

Space is the future of mankind. Without mastering it our species is as doomed to death as we are in our individual lives.

Sooo I was about to launch into one of my rants buuut I don't really feel like typing all of it out so...this forum will be spared.

For now...

By totally guessing - maybe quadrillions to quintillions of dollars, and at least 10s of years. With current tech + sustained development. I do think that if the world unified resources and research today for it, A FORM OF IT (a super limited form - nothing like acting as a giant mass relay lol) could be done in this century.

But that won't happen, not even close. And the 'Citadel' we build from it would still be only in a sort of visual way, not the Mass Effect Reaper Citadel way.

More realistically, and assuming some significant rate of technological and societal advancement (maybe not Kurzweil Singularity stuff, but also still not any Dark Ages), then maybe it could be done in a much closer-to-Mass-Effect way, still in centuries.

You'll get many varying opinions here, really. Some will think it could never be done. Some will think it'll take far beyond all of our lifetimes and then some. Some will think (at least biological or transhuman) immortality could happen this century but a Citadel will still take a long time (but maybe some of us would see it). Some will think a similar enough result may happen this century.

In any case, no matter what, don't expect it in this half century, even if all of humanity focused on it in a hive-mind, heh. IMO.

The more modest goal is to just get to explore and maybe settle elsewhere in this solar system this century. Then we'll see about expanding further and building stations that could comfortably hold millions of people. 0_0

When TIM speaks of the advancements that Reapers could give us, he's serious, and correct, and right to an extent. Even through they did their terrible Harvest etc, in terms of technological advancement, they really did boost humanity up in what may have otherwise taken us 1,000s-10,000s of years or more, assuming that our species even survives through this time (no guarantee of that). And so harnessing their technology really did carry the potential to advance humanity 1,000s-10,000s of year or more, compared to how we'd more likely advance on our own.

A Citadel, while certainly not a perfect tech and we'll probably see even better and more utopian environments in later Mass Effect games, still is not even close to our wildest yet achievable dreams in the real world, here and now. We either work on this stuff for a super long time (again, even assuming a steady/fast rate of tech advancement), whatever 'super long' equates to --- or we get uplifted or transformed somehow, by something  (our own AI or other AI or aliens or something else unknown).

I say we jump into genetic engineering using stem cells and whatever else to create more powerful, space ready humans. Far more durable, highly resistant to radiation, able to digest just about anything, can breathe multiple gases etc.

So we would be just like the Vorcha then, but better looking. That's cool.

My guess is we should have one up and running by 2256 at the latest.

Not unless someone makes a scientific discovery on par with Eezo, and even then I don't think so. Too early by far.
