All three DA games look quite different, sadly the series has no identity but thats another topic

I like DA:O's dark and gritty style the most

Wasn't a fan at all of DA2's anime/cartoony style and I also don't like DAI: Disney

But what do you guys think? Everyone has different preferences

Which DA game had the best artstyle?
Who knows maybe DA4 will have a completely new one

DA:O was awfully bland and generic, but I thought DA2 was just plain ugly. So DAI wins by default.

Its all your opinion of course but how is DA:I's artstyle not generic? Serious question

Oh, it's generic too. But DAI at least has a move varied palette. I didn't mean to imply that I though DAi was really great. But all I want from an art style is to not really notice it.

Edit: yeah, there's a bit of a paradox there. I'm not into noticing style, but if a game has no style then I notice that it has no style.

For me, DA:O. Then DA:2. Then, right down at the bottom, DA:I. DA:O had a completely different art style to any other game I had played, which made exploring that world very interesting and exciting. DA:2, even the it's second, it's very close to being first. I think the change in art style was an intelligent decision, and overall, I enjoyed running around in that world. It's a shame many areas of that game were recycled because I would have loved to see even that little bit more variety in what that art style could deliver. DA:I... I don't know what it is. The art style, compared to the other two, doesn't feel very exciting. Bare in mind, I'm not talking graphics. The graphics are pretty cool. It's just, the art style doesn't excite me. It feels like, instead of going with something different and unique to what other games are doing, they opted to just follow the trend which the other two games didn't do. Maybe it's because they had to use the Frostbite Engine. I'm not sure.

For me it was way too colorful but I see what you mean

DA:O was a bit too "brown" at times (still prefer it to DA:I though)

I like the item / equipment design the best in DAI by far. The Longbow of the Griffon is the most beautiful bow I ever wheld.

DA:I is the best... but it still needs a little more refinement.

DA2 gave us sewage like Hayder's Razor (and of all weapons to make a return in DA:I, this piece of crap??), Golden Lion set, and the Empress' Point.

DA:O had the cancer-tier mage robes and space marine armor, and lacked any truly defining visual qualities.

The concept art version is so much better lol

DAO>DAI>>>>>>>>DA2. Funny enough, only good thing about whole DA2 (including expansions, DLCs, protagonist etc) were the qunari designs though, the rest was sh**. DAO may not have very good graphical quality since it's an old game but its dark atmosphere and character and monster designs were the best in my opinion. DAI is better than DA2 but not as good as DAO even with better graphics.

I'd argue DA:O actually had a pretty "generic" dark fantasy style. Pretty bland/brown too. And the weapon and armor design was just... meh... Fixed slightly in the DLCs and Awakening though, Sentinel armor is rad.

As for DA2? eh. hardly memorable but not ugly either.

I prefer DA:I's style way more. The tarrot cards are drawn in a interesting style that blends in with the world amazingly, it reminds me of old medieval artwork a lot.

1st: DAI- The world is simply gorgeous! I find myself stopping everyone in a while to appreciate the environments. They did a wonderful job in recreating conceptual artworks from WoT. The armors can be a bit TOO fanciful, but it still held a degree of realism

2. DAO - True, was a generic western rpg look, but I still enjoyed the now outdated environment. Armors were nice, but too similar to each other. Facial animation was pretty good.

3. The overall world environment was bland. Character armor were fine, but goodness! The champion armor was just too much!

And DA:I has a generic high fantasy style, everything is colorful, shiney and disney like

So I guess it comes down to preferences

I think DAO and DAO Awakening weapons and armors were by far the coolest ones. Especially Vigilance (The sword that was made out of the Eldest Dragonbone) and the Sentinel Armor were truly amazing. DAO and DAO:A could look much cooler than DAI with the same graphics, in my opinion. In DAO, Warden Commander Armor (Dropped by Sophia Dryden) and Starfang (the sword made by that meteorite) and the sword that was dropped by Gaxkang were the coolest looking items. I liked DAO designs much more than DAI.

Probably DA:I. Though I'm not so keen on Orlais, or the fact that Heavy Armour can apparently mean a bare chest. And I didn't really like the style of the Inquisitor's armour.

DA2 was just a mess.

DA:O was OK, though I didn't like the giant shoulders. Nothing to write home about, but it didn't really get in the way of the game.

How's DA:I disney like?

everything is shiny and colorful

DA was never dark fantasy (like The Witcher) but it still had dark and gritty elements (DA:O at least)
With DA:I everything is watered down and sanitised, its the Disney version of Dragon Age

Its not just the artstyle though, the story has a saturday morning cartoon villian etc.

DAO is the worst by far. It's just brown, variation of brown, and another variation of brown. The weapons and armor weren't all that amazing either, as they were pretty bland. Except the swords Vigilance and Starfang, which are the best-looking weapons in DA imo.

DA2 had horrible weapon designs (those 'greatswords' are freaking tables, not greatswords! the staves were the only decent ones), but I like it much more than DAO. It obviously suffers from repeated locations.

DA:I definitely looks the best graphics-wise, and its art style wins because it's more colorful (so much better than 'wow look how grimdark we are' Origins style) and the environments all look different. Also, the tarot cards are awesome.

Although Val Royeaux did make me want to gouge out my eyes because of the candy colored EVERYTHING.

For me Dragon Age 2. Dragon Age Origins never really stood out for me graphic-wise, feeling repetitive in visual design choices for different areas and dull from a color perspective. Dragon Age Inquisition in turn is by far most beautiful visually, but for me it never feels like it has its own style and actually, partially due to the lack of the cinematic camera and armor choices, was never truly memorable for me.

DA2, however, first of all had the best character visual design of all the games, giving very distinct feeling to almost major characters, but it also managed to give a lot of character to city and surrounding areas themselves if one stopped to really looked at them. For me, out of all the games, DA2 was the only with a distinct visual style that was really pleasing for me.

I don't give a frig about the art direction or distinctiveness or whathaveit. Overall, I'm most satisfied by the clothing, armor, architecture, and faces in DAI.

But other than that I've never really seen the point. I sure as hell never played Neverwinter Nights for its art style. :?

I think I'd choose DA2s art style combined with DAIs graphical quality, with a little of the grittiness of DAO. Yes, give me that please.
