umm... difficult.

i like DAO UI and it's coffee stains. i like DA2 wall drawings, the loading screens, the book pictures, it seemed in sync with the setting. i like DAI portraits and tarot cards (the same style).

i didn't like DAO shiny auras, DA2 copy/paste cartoon style (that ridiculous crow's beak and giant 2h swords still haunt me), DAI's iphone UI - browsing codex in that thing feels... out of place.

Um... Beak? And some 2h swords looked good, like this one-

I like the item / equipment design the best in DAI by far. The Longbow of the Griffon is the most beautiful bow I ever wheld.

You do know that the item/equipment design were mostly copied from previous games? Including Griffon Bow, which is a copy-paste from Legacy DLC.

DAI by virtue of being able to render people without lumpy horrific faces.

Origins was darker and more detailed.

2 had the clearest face design, such as better teeth and eyes.

Inquisition felt more lived in, and improved on many of the designs from the previous two games.

I'm going to have to give it to Inquisition, because it improved on DA2's art style, whereas DA2 didn't improve on Origins, and it felt more up-to-date for it's time than both of them (more so than Origins).

Yeah, that really isn't a good example of a good 2-handed weapon. Unfortunately, due to the time they had to make DA2, it's probably the best non-axe 2-handed weapon.

It's not just that. it's the detail. You can't argue that Dai art style is not technically better then dao. And let's say the dao is dark. With the fade and future bits we can see that when dai got dark...it got dar. And Dao is just murky. It's in midevil England . Everything is just brown.

so what? I like medieval England

And DA:I was dark? wut? It was the Disney version of DA

DA:I artstyle sucked ass, sure it has better graphics but thats about it

I think you are confusing these things

This series has plenty of filth and gore for my tastes but YMMV.

I'd take DA:I overall, followed by DA:O, and DA2 last with exception of the Qunari design (the Qunari in 2 were my favorite design).  I'm not sure I agree with the idea that bright color=Disney. Terantino films tend to be eye-poppingly colorful. Same for Zack Snyder (although I'm less fond of his work), or in video game land something like Killer is Dead. Anyway, I'm off topic.  Like the OP said, its personal taste thing.

sure just because its shiny doesn't mean its disney but the story and atmosphere support my Disney argument

So I can't agree with the Tarantino comparison, the movies while colorful are very different

Tarantino movies while colorful are definitely not "disney"

Naughty person would say - Tarantino's movies are crap, so is DA:I  :P

Hey, I actually agree with all of that precisely. Nicely summed up.

I like people who like my likings.

(Thus the extra elaboration.)

I like the new darkspawn from DA2 and DA:I, those guys with pointy armors. I just wish they had more variety, and brought back the ogres.

The color pallette should have definetly been darker for DA:I.

You actually prefer them in DA2 and DA:I? While I do like them in DA2 (except the genlock design) and DA:I, they just look so much more vile and twisted in Origins.

Couldn't find one for genlocks, but here:

I'd say DA:O then DAI. I really don't like the way DA2 looks with everyone looking the same and the downgrade on the darkspawn which I don't understand why they changed their looks at all.

I always thought the Ogre in DAO had a stupid looking face, but yes DA2 in general was a big downgrade graphically/style wise and not just with the darkspawn.

1st: DAI- The world is simply gorgeous! I find myself stopping everyone in a while to appreciate the environments. They did a wonderful job in recreating conceptual artworks from WoT. The armors can be a bit TOO fanciful, but it still held a degree of realism

2. DAO - True, was a generic western rpg look, but I still enjoyed the now outdated environment. Armors were nice, but too similar to each other. Facial animation was pretty good.

3. The overall world environment was bland. Character armor were fine, but goodness! The champion armor was just too much!

I agree with you on the order and a lot of what you said.

But no the facial animation wasnt good in DAO (the face models/textures were) but the animation was terrible. (Im an animator, and have focused mainly on facial animation)

I think the 3 art styles fits each of the series perfectly. Dark and gritty all shades of brown for Origins for me added more *unf* effect to the already dark and gritty game.

DA2's art style is just as boring as the one cave that you go back again and again and again throughout the game. I swear to god Isabella was the only ray of sunshine there.

DAI's style for its flamboyance. If you go open world, it certainly would not do with only diff shades of grey and brown.

I'd say the best for me was inquisition.
I much preferred the more 'renaissance' feel of the design. Its quite refreshing to not have a Medieval RPG. Also the architecture was, whilst not always pretty, was interesting and different. I loved the grass roofs of Ferelden, and the Giant metal spikes in old Tevinter forts, I liked that because whilst it wasn't realistic compared to our world, it makes sense that, especially Tevinter architecture, would have a lot of things which wouldn't be possible in our world because they have magic and enchantments which keep the walls strong.

I think I also liked DA:I's art style better because it was brighter (and i would argue its not any brighter in most places then the real world is), I like thats its not all dark and gloomy, because things dont need to be dark and gloomy and **** like that to be cool.

And what is with the crazy giant spikes on the keeps? They serve no functional purpose and would be a ridiculously impractical feature to construct. Classic example of allowing art style to triumph over immersion. The DA art director is a seriously talented person, and the tarot card theme is well done, but I personally wish someone would reign him in a bit and bring back the idea of the aesthetic being more grounded in reality and the artistic motifs of the era that the game is supposedly set in.

These are old Tevinter keeps... a society which can literally bury a city into the ground, which is build ton magic and enchantments... I can buy that they can put giant metal spikes on the keeps.

And I would think that those Giant metal spikes make it hard to climb up the keeps walls.

In Inquisition, you can tell the origin of NPCs just by looking at what they are wearing.

For me it's DAI > DA2 >>>>>> DAO. I think the bland art style of DAO is one of the game's biggest weaknesses. It has a lot of individually well-designed elements, but when taken altogether it's just sort of ... brown.

I'm glad that after three games worth of development Thedas finally has its own visual language. I hope they stick with it through DA4 and beyond.

I still don't know where all this DAO is too brown argument is coming from.

DAO had a bigger colour palette than DAI and DA2 put together.

Need more details people, obviously the details in the models have been compromised to make the rendering more realistic without killing the wimpy hardware speccs of the console.

Never paying for a PC game again that has been designed for console then ported to PC.

Not at all. What is your problem with it, it looks like a perfectly functional sword compared to DAO greatswords.

All three DA games look quite different, sadly the series has no identity but thats another topic

I like DA:O's dark and gritty style the most

Wasn't a fan at all of DA2's anime/cartoony style and I also don't like DAI: Disney

But what do you guys think? Everyone has different preferences
Which DA game had the best artstyle?
Who knows maybe DA4 will have a completely new one

DAO has the best art style.

That is a greatsword from DAO, actually, ported over to DA2. It was called Ageless.
